A hacker is using interest in free antivirus software to spread a nasty malware infection to Windows PCs, according to security researchers.
The malware is circulating through a fake Bitdefender website at bitdefender-download[.]co, which makes the domain appear legit. But in reality, the site will install three pieces of malware, warns the security provider DomainTools.
The fake site seems to spoof all the elements found on the official site for Bitdefender's free antivirus program for Windows. However, the download link on the malicious site will deliver a ZIP archive that contains the malicious attack, which includes the so-called "VenomRAT," a remote access Trojan that can secretly harvest passwords and record keystrokes.
In addition, the attack will install the StormKitty and SilentTrinity malware programs, which can also steal passwords, including details for cryptocurrency wallets, and maintain long-term access to the PC. 'The implications of long-term access may include repeat compromise or selling access,' DomainTools added.
The security provider suspects the fake Bitdefender site was likely used in phishing attacks since the malicious domain overlapped with internet infrastructure hosting other fake sites impersonating banks and IT services.
A security researcher on X/Twitter initially spotted the fake Bitdefender last week. In response, the antivirus company said: 'This website is not operated by Bitdefender or our partners, and we are working to have it taken offline. We do detect the file that it serves and also block access to the website.'
Although the fake Bitdefender site remains up, Google's Chrome browser will flag the link to the free software as malicious, preventing users from downloading it.

Chrome will now display AI reviews of online stores

Google just announced a neat little feature for its Chrome web browser. It'll now show AI-generated reviews of online stores, to make buying stuff "safer and more efficient." The feature is available by clicking an icon just to the left of the web address in the browser. This creates a pop-up that spills the tea about the store's overall reputation, with information on stuff like product quality, pricing, customer service and return policy. The AI creates these pop-ups by scanning user reviews from various partners, including Reseller Ratings, ScamAdviser, Trustpilot and several others. It's only for US shoppers at the moment, with English being the only language available. It's also currently tied to the desktop browser. We've reached out to Google to ask if and when the feature will come to mobile. The company didn't confirm anything when asked a similar question by TechCrunch. This could help Google compete with Amazon, which already uses AI to summarize product ratings and the like. This is just the latest move the company has made to cram AI into the shopping experience. Google recently introduced the ability to virtually try on clothing and makeup and it has been developing tools to provide personalized product recommendations and improved price tracking.

Microsoft Is Giving Windows 10 Users Free Security Updates for a Year, but There's a Catch

As Microsoft gets ready to sunset Windows 10, security support is scheduled to end in October. You can get a one-year extended security update for $30. But if you want to stick with Windows 10 for another year, you might be better off with Microsoft's free option -- you'll just need to use cloud backup and connect it with your OneDrive account. The ability to get free updates on Windows 10 is a pretty big deal because it is still the most widely used Windows OS, accounting for just over 53% of installs as of May 2025. That leaves millions of people without security support in just a few months unless they upgrade. So the cloud backup option gives users a way out without costing them any money. The only potential issue is OneDrive. Anyone with a Microsoft account gets up to 5GB of storage for free. However, as The Verge points out, some backups may exceed this limitation, requiring users to purchase a monthly or yearly plan. At $2 per month for 100GB of cloud storage, a year of OneDrive still costs less than the $30 for a year of additional security updates, but it may still cause frustration among some customers. Windows 10 was released a decade ago, in July 2015. Microsoft will be rolling out the ESU wizard in July 2025. Microsoft How to get Windows 10 security updates for free Per Microsoft's blog post, there are now three options for those who want to stay on Windows 10 and still receive security updates: Use Windows Backup to sync settings to the cloud via OneDrive. Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Redeeming those points can buy you one year of security updates. Pay $30 for the extended security updates program. You will be presented with these options starting in July, which is when Microsoft plans to roll out the sign-up wizard for the Extended Security Updates program. Signing up for this option will guarantee updates until Oct. 13, 2026, although businesses will have the option to purchase up to three years of additional updates. So, this isn't a long-term solution, but rather gives you more time to upgrade to Windows 11. It's been an uphill battle for Microsoft, as people have been reluctant to upgrade their existing hardware. There are myriad differences between the two operating systems, but Microsoft's string of unpopular decisions along with Windows 11 compatibility issues have kept the prior generation OS around a lot longer than it normally would be.
