Severe weather warnings for NZ as heavy rain, strong wind approaches

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to hit the western coast later on Sunday as a front sweeps in from the Tasman Sea.
MetService has issued 11 severe weather warnings across the country.
"A front sweeps over southern and central New Zealand from the Tasman Sea during Sunday and Monday, bringing a period of heavy rain and strong north to northwest winds," the forecaster said.
Orange heavy rain warnings have been issued for Buller, the Westland ranges, parts of Canterbury and parts of Otago from Sunday evening until Monday morning. In parts of Canterbury and Westland, rain could reach 200mm.
Heavy rain watches have also been issued for Taranaki, parts of Tasman, Tararua Range and Grey District.

MetService is warning drivers to be careful on Canterbury's High Country roads, with winds already reaching more than 100km/h.
The region is under a strong wind watch for 12 hours from 6pm Sunday. Wellington and Marlborough have also been issued strong wind watches.
Meteorologist Devlin Lynden said people on mountain roads need to take care as Mount Hutt is being battered with 120km winds.
MetService said there was a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the Canterbury Alps, Fiordland and the Otago headwaters on Sunday. These thunderstorms will boost localised rainfall rates to 10-25mm/h, or possibly higher in a few places.
A low risk of thunderstorms covers northern Westland, western parts of Southland, Stewart Island, the Queenstown Lakes District and the Mackenzie Basin from late evening as indicated on the chart.

More Kiwi firefighters to help battle Canadian blazes

Tens of thousands have had to evacuate from fires across the country since they began breaking out in May . Fire and Emergency (FENZ) said it had received a formal request for assistance from its Canadian counterpart and would send four more firefighters to join the 50 already there . It first sent a small, specialist crew at the start of July, and followed it up a week later with a larger group of volunteer firefighters . The existing deployments were in Manitoba province, while the new group - which included three taskforce leaders and a helicopter co-ordinator - would go to Alberta, FENZ said. In a statement, Deputy National Commander Steph Rotarangi said the winter conditions meant New Zealand was well-placed to provide international support. "It's an opportunity for our specialists to learn from the experience and utilise their skills in challenging conditions," she said. "It's a long, hard slog for their crews, so our team heading over will help provide relief and respite for the teams that have been battling these fires for a long time." Frosty morning affects Dunedin flights
Grit trucks were being used but the Dunedin City Council advised people to take care on roads and footpaths. "Our contractors are out checking and treating main roads as required." It was also a cold, frosty morning in Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes District, with dry roads and clear skies. There were patches of fog around Clyde and temperatures ranging from -2°C to -6°C, a spokeswoman for the Central Otago District Council said. "Caution is still advised in shaded areas and on bridge decks as these could be slippery especially around daybreak. "Keep an eye out for excess grit, reduce your speeds and drive to the conditions." In Queenstown, there were only a few slippery patches to be cautious of, a spokesman for the district council advised. These included the Fernhill roundabout at One Mile and the odd spot on Glenorchy Rd heading out to Wilsons Bay. Precautionary grit had been applied on Mt Aspiring Road at the Glendhu Bluffs. Over the Crown Range road, the CMA anti-freezing agent was doing its job where applied, with no major issues to report. Temperatures early this morning ranged from -1° in Wānaka to -5°C at Albert Town and Hawea Flat; -5° in Arrowtown, -3° around Shotover Country and Jacks Point. It was -7° in the Lindis Valley but just above freezing south of Alexandra. MetService said some of the coldest temperatures were in the Canterbury High Country and inland Canterbury.
