Jennifer Lopez tears up at 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' Sundance premiere: 'It's a big deal'

USA Today27-01-2025
Five years after she was infamously snubbed for "Hustlers," could Jennifer Lopez be heading toward her first Oscar nomination?
The "Jenny From the Block" singer, 55, teared up at Sundance Film Festival on Sunday as her new movie musical "Kiss of the Spider Woman" received a standing ovation, according to videos shared by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
Lopez explained to the crowd that she has always wanted to star in a musical film.
"I've been waiting for this moment my whole life," she said. "When you talk about the importance of musicals, the reason that I even wanted to be in this business was because my mom would sit me in front of the TV, it would come on once a year: 'West Side Story' on Thanksgiving."
The "Marry Me" star got emotional as she continued, "I was just mesmerized, and I was like, 'That's what I want to do.' That was always my goal, and this is the first time I actually got to do it. So it's a big deal."

Lopez also thanked the film's director, Bill Condon, saying he "made my dream come true."

Lopez plays film star Ingrid Luna in "Kiss of the Spider Woman," an adaptation of the stage musical about prisoners in Argentina. The musical was in turn based on the 1976 novel. William Hurt won the Oscar for best actor for his performance in a 1985 film adaptation, which was also nominated for best picture.
Early reviews out of Sundance have heaped praise on Lopez, with The Hollywood Reporter saying it's "one of the best roles of her career" and Deadline writing that it's the role she was born to play.
Jennifer Lopezsays 'Hustlers' Oscars snub 'was a sting,' but her 'life is about more than awards'
When Variety asked Lopez about the Oscar buzz, she said she doesn't "even want to begin the conversation" but that "of course, I would love it to get the recognition that I believe that it deserves."
In 2019, Lopez received a significant amount of Oscar buzz for her role in "Hustlers," which earned her nominations at the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards, and Critics' Choice Awards. But she was ultimately not nominated at the Oscars, which critics considered one of that year's most shocking snubs.
In an interview with Allure in 2021, Lopez said "it was a sting" not to earn the Oscar nod.
"I was like, 'Okay, when you're supposedly in everybody else's mind supposed to be nominated and you're not, what does that mean? Is it really real?'" she said. "'Are the other ones real and this one isn't?' It came to a point where I was like, 'This is not why I do this. I don't do this to have 10 Oscars sitting on my mantel or 20 Grammys.'"
Lopez also opened up about the Oscar snub in her 2022 documentary "Halftime."
"The truth is, I really started to think I was going to get nominated," she said in the film. "I got my hopes up, because so many people were telling me I would be, and then it didn't happen."

Bill Cosby speaks out on his 'Cosby Show' costar Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death

Bill Cosby is paying tribute to his TV son Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Warner, who starred alongside Cosby on the beloved family sitcom "The Cosby Show," reportedly died on Sunday, July 20, following an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica, according to ABC News and The Associated Press. Costa Rican National Police confirmed to ABC News that Warner died after being caught by a high current in the water while swimming near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica. Warner was 54 at the time of his death. USA TODAY reached out to the late actor's representatives for comment. Warner played Theo Huxtable opposite Cosby's Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable for eight seasons on the iconic NBC series, which earned Warner a Primetime Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy. In an interview with ABC News published Monday, July 21, Cosby reflected on his relationship with Warner. "He was always a great studier, and I enjoyed working with him very much," Cosby, 88, told the outlet. "He always knew his part. ... He always knew his lines, and he always knew where to go." Warner was a 5-foot-5-inch, 13-year-old and "literally the last person" to audition for the role of Theo for "The Cosby Show," following a nationwide search, he told NPR in 2014. Show producers were looking for a taller Theo. However, Warner's audition, overseen by creator and star Cosby, led to the successful casting as the only son and middle child of five children in the famed TV family. Malcolm-Jamal Warner dies in drowning: 'The Cosby Show' star was 54 Bill Cosby recalls final conversation with Malcolm-Jamal Warner Cosby, who served nearly three years in prison following a 2018 conviction on sexual assault charges, told ABC News he kept in touch with Warner over the years, adding, "Malcolm calls here regularly." The disgraced actor-comedian last spoke to Warner three weeks before his death, Cosby's representative Andrew Wyatt confirmed to USA TODAY. Wyatt said Cosby caught up with an ecstatic Warner following a musical performance in Minneapolis (Warner also dabbled in music and poetry, winning a Grammy Award for best traditional R&B performance in 2015.) Additionally, Wyatt said Warner's tragic death reminded Cosby of the 1997 death of his son, Ennis Cosby. Ennis, who was 27 at the time, was murdered near Interstate 405 in Los Angeles after being shot in the head by 18-year-old Mikhail Markhasev in a failed robbery attempt. Malcolm-Jamal Warner tributes: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Beyoncé, more stars mourn actor's death Aside from his starring role on "The Cosby Show," Warner was also known for his performances as Malcolm McGee in the 1990s UPN sitcom "Malcolm & Eddie" and as Dr. AJ Austin on the Fox medical drama "The Resident" from 2018 to 2023. Per Wyatt, Cosby said Warner's body of work as a performer will maintain his legacy and "continue to humanize" him to fans. Contributing: Taijuan Moorman, Bryan Alexander and Maria Puente, USA TODAY

Megyn Kelly Slams Steamy Jennifer Lopez Concert Clip: ‘So She's a Soft Porn Star Now'

Apparently Megyn Kelly isn't planning to go to a Jennifer Lopez concert anytime soon. On Monday (July 21), the SiriusXM host shared a clip from a recent concert — as the pop star makes her way across Europe for the Up All Night: Live in 2025 tour — that shows Lopez dancing suggestively with three male backup dancers to her 2011 Lil Wayne-assisted hit 'I'm Into You.' More from Billboard Megyn Kelly Was Definitely 'Not Into' Usher's Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show, But Says It Could Have Been Worse Tyler, The Creator Releases 'Don't Tap the Glass' Album: Stream It Now Billy Corgan Reacts to MCR's Cover of Smashing Pumpkins Classic 'So she's a soft porn star now,' Kelly wrote on X alongside the video, whose original poster had captioned it '55 year old Jennifer Lopez 'performing.'' Kelly added: 'Great choices!' Anyone who's seen Lopez perform recently — like when she returned to host the American Music Awards in May and kicked off the show with a choreography-heavy opening number soundtracked by the biggest hits of 2024-25 — knows this performance is nothing new for the singer/actress, long known for her dancing chops and her uninhibited onstage persona. (This is the woman behind the 2014 Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit 'Booty,' after all.) But it doesn't seem like Kelly has ever counted herself among Lopez's fan base. During her speech at a President Trump victory rally in January, The Megyn Kelly Show host invoked name, saying: 'The good news just keeps on coming. I woke up this morning, I was 2 inches taller, a pound thinner and I had skin like Jennifer Lopez. Speaking of J. Lo, how happy are you her candidate lost? It's so delightful.' In June, Kelly dedicated a segment of her show (and a full online essay) to calling out the 'desperate' bodysuit Lopez wore to her 2025 World Pride Festival set in Washington, D.C. And last year, Lopez caught a stray when the former Fox News host took issue with a different musician, Usher, and his 2024 Super Bowl halftime show. 'Not into Usher or this halftime show,' Kelly wrote on X in February 2024, following the R&B superstar's headlining stint at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium. 'However I do appreciate that my kids haven't had anyone's vag exposed to them on screen as they innocently wait for the football to start. (Hi J-Lo, Shakira.)' (While there was no nudity during Lopez's co-headlining halftime show with Shakira at the 2020 Super Bowl, Kelly seems to remember a much more explicit production.) Once Lopez wraps her string of European dates next month, she'll return to Las Vegas for a new residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace starting Dec. 30, with dates through March 2026. Her Up All Night Live in Las Vegas residency follows her Jennifer Lopez: All I Have stint from 2016 to 2018 at Zappos Theater in Planet Hollywood.
