Alleging inadequate compensation, South Gujarat farmers to organise tractor rally against power corporation

Indian Express14-07-2025
With work on a power transmission line from Kutch to Navsari underway, several farmers of South Gujarat have alleged that they have not received adequate compensation in lieu of their agricultural fields being used to install electricity towers.
On Sunday, a number of these farmers from around 50 villages in Olpad taluka gathered at Anand Ashram in Bhadol village to protest against the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL).
The farmers, gathered under the aegis of Khedut Samaj Gujarat (KSG), announced plans to take out a tractor rally this week in Surat.
Jayesh Patel, the state president of KSG, a farmers' body, said, 'We have held a meeting with the farmers of Olpad taluka, and there are many such farmers in different villages in four more talukas in Surat district. We will conduct a joint meeting with them in the coming days to make the farmers aware of their right to compensation, and also invite them to participate in the tractor rally.'
Jayesh said, 'A big corporate company has set up a renewable power plant at Khavda in Kutch. Through this plant, the company will generate 30,000 megawatts of power through solar and wind power. On behalf of the corporate company, the PGCIL is working to set up transmission lines and electric towers, which will pass through eight districts in Gujarat.'
Jayesh said, 'We have taken complaints from the affected farmers, and they were assured a compensation amount of Rs 1.34 crore each for the electric towers installed and transmission lines passing through the agricultural fields. The farmers have been paid a far lower amount. We have determined the tower's base area to be 247 meters. A high-voltage transmission line of 765 kVDC will pass through it. We are not opposing the work, but we want the farmers to be fairly compensated.'
Surat district KSG president Ramesh Patel said, 'Generally, if a power line passes through any agricultural field, the price of that field goes down. In the coming days, we will make a representation to the government to get the transmission line passed through the sea coast area so that the agricultural field does not get affected.'
In the coming days, KSG is planning to organise a joint meeting with the affected farmers of Olpad, Mangrol, Palsana, Bardoli and Kamrej talukas. They will also hold a meeting with the affected farmers from Navsari and Bharuch.
KSG members have appealed to the affected farmers to prepare to join the protest rally.
KSG's Surat district president Parimal Patel was also present at the meeting, among others.
Officials of PGCI could not be contacted for comment.

AP Discoms seek ERC nod to collect true-up charges of Rs 12,771 cr

Vijayawada: The three power distribution companies (discoms) in the state have filed a petition before Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC), seeking permission to collect Rs 12,771 crore from consumers through true-up charges. The ERC released the notification asking the public to file their objections/suggestions on the petitions filed by the discoms. The Left parties have demanded that the govt immediately withdraw the proposal. According to the affidavit, SPDCL wants to collect Rs 3,046 crore through true-up charges to recover the actual costs of power supplied from 2019 to 2024. APEPDCL has urged the commission to allow it to collect Rs 7,790 crore, while APCPDCL wants to recover Rs 1,935 crore. The discoms have been collecting fuel and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPCA) charges for the past three years. Recently, the distribution companies filed a petition before APERC seeking ratification of its decision to collect 40 paise per unit, which has been continuing for the past six months. While APERC, in Nov 2024, allowed the discoms to recover Rs 9,412 crore through FPPCA charges, the discoms levied nearly Rs 14,000 crore burden on the consumers in the last one year, citing old dues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Even Beautiful Women Have Their 'Oops' Moments Read More Undo However, energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has made it clear that the govt has no plans to increase power tariff, adding that power tariff may be reduced in the coming days. He blamed the previous YSRCP govt for the discoms' move to collect the true-up and FPPCA charges. "The mismanagement and irregularities during the YSRCP regime forced discoms to recover the true-up and FPPCA charges from the consumer. The discoms have filed petitions to collect the dues pertaining to the YSRCP regime," Gottipati claimed. Dismissing the minister's allegations, CPI-M leaders V Srinivasa Rao and Ch Baburao said blaming the previous regime is only a "cover-up act" by the TDP-led NDA govt, and warned of agitations across the state if the discoms did not withdraw the true-up charges notice.

SAD accuses AAP of launching political vendetta against Majithia

Ludhiana: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of targeting senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia through politically motivated cases. SAD leaders claimed that Majithia was being denied civil liberties and was facing fresh legal action aimed at silencing the opposition. Addressing a press conference in Ludhiana, senior SAD leaders Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Dr Daljit Singh Cheema alleged that a false case had been registered against Majithia for allegedly obstructing a Vigilance Bureau raid at his Amritsar residence on June 25. They asserted that the raid was live-streamed, and the footage clearly showed that Majithia did not interfere with officials. Instead, they accused the Vigilance team of acting in a high-handed manner. "The team was not stopped from conducting its business in any way," said Grewal. He pointed out what he called a double standard, citing an incident where Union minister Ravneet Bittu allegedly physically stopped a police officer from arresting Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu in a corruption case. "No FIR was filed then, but Majithia is being targeted only because AAP fears his presence among the people," he added. The leaders also claimed that the FIR was a retaliatory move after SAD legislator Ganieve Kaur Majithia filed a complaint with Chandigarh Police. She accused the Vigilance Bureau of criminal trespass into her official residence without a search warrant while she was in Amritsar. "The AAP government is jittery that legal action may be taken against its own team, and that's why it rushed to file a counter FIR against Majithia," said Dr Cheema. Grewal revealed that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had sought a meeting with the Punjab governor to raise the issue. Although the governor was indisposed, the meeting is expected to take place within a week. "We will fight this battle both politically and legally. The AAP government's vendetta politics must be exposed," he said. The press conference also touched upon other controversies, including the Ananta Enclave project developed by Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali. Grewal alleged that Ayali had struck a deal with the AAP government, allowing him to construct a road on government land to access his colony. He further claimed that Ayali facilitated the entry of his son's father-in-law, former DIG Gurpreet Singh Gill, into AAP during the Ludhiana West by-election to shield himself from scrutiny. Dr Cheema also criticized the AAP government's new tender policy, which mandates that no road repair tender below Rs 50 crore be issued by the Mandi Board. He said the move undermines small local contractors and opens the door to corruption and favoritism toward outsiders. MSID:: 123043831 413 |

Debt-ridden Himachal turns to lottery to make a quick buck

Kullu: Cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh is trying its luck with lottery to turn its fortunes. The cabinet has allowed lottery operations that were shut down in 1999. Burdened by a Rs 1 lakh-crore debt, it hopes to make a modest Rs 50 to Rs 100 crore annually from sale of lottery tickets. The decision to reintroduce lottery in the mountain state after over a quarter century was taken in a cabinet meeting on July 31. The recommendation came from a cabinet sub-committee set up to give suggestions to boost state revenue. It seems to be inspired by other states that run lotteries. Neighbouring Punjab earned Rs 235 crore through sale of lottery tickets during the 2024-25 fiscal, while the tiny state of Sikkim made Rs 30 crore during the same period. Kerala tops the list — the southern state earned a jaw-dropping Rs 13,582 crore last financial year. Himachal, which is finding it difficult to meet the expenses of rebuilding the damage caused by this year's landslides and flash floods, hopes to mop up some much-needed funds this way. "Many states earn through lotteries. You will be surprised to know how much Kerala earns. Himachal Pradesh govt has decided to restart the lottery system in the state after a recommendation was made by a Cabinet sub-committee," said industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Greece Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. The decision to reintroduce lotteries in Himachal has come at a time when the state's debt stands at a back-breaking Rs 1,04,729 crore, and the per capita debt has reached Rs 1.17 lakh per head, the second highest after Arunachal Pradesh. To make the financial situation even worse, the revenue deficit grant (RDF), financial assistance from the Centre, has come down from Rs 6,258 crore in 2024 to Rs 3,257 crore in 2025, and the GST compensation has been stopped by the Union govt. Govt is expected to introduce the bill on lotteries in the monsoon session of assembly, beginning Aug 18. Himachal Pradesh had banned lotteries, both state-run and from outside the state, in 1999 under Sections 7, 8 & 9 of the Lotteries (Regulation) Act, 1998, during the tenure of chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. The lottery decision has not gone down well with opposition BJP. Former CM and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur criticised the move, saying: "Lotteries were prohibited because they ruined families, homes were auctioned, and people were driven to suicide." Lotteries are legal in 13 states — Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Assam. MSID:: 123044952 413 |
