Successful rescue of distressed sailing yacht near Richards Bay

The Citizen29-07-2025
A local sailing yacht with seven crew onboard was successfully pulled back to safety after it experienced a mechanical failure and was drifting at sea, north of Richards Bay recently.
The yacht had departed Richards Bay two weeks when it experienced a motor mechanical failure, forcing them to turn around.
'Nearing Richards Bay, against strong south-westerly winds, gusting in excess of 15 knots and in three-to-four metre rough sea swells, they requested assistance 15 nautical miles north of Richards Bay – about four nautical miles offshore of the lighthouse,' said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach.
He said the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre and NSRI Richards Bay were alerted to reports from Ocean Sailing Association of South Africa, and the Commodore of the Zululand Yacht Club of the sailing yacht.
'Our duty crew responded to our NSRI Richards Bay station 19 rescue base, where the NSRI rescue craft Ocean Guardian was launched.
'On arrival on the scene, a towline was rigged, and we towed them into the Port of Richards Bay to a safe berth at the Zululand Yacht Club, and they required no further assistance.'

Buccleuch Temple celebrates Amman with food donations to homes in need

Buccleuch Temple celebrates Amman with food donations to homes in need Buccleuch Temple hosted its annual Amman Thiruvizha Festival on August 3, a sacred event dedicated to honouring the Hindu goddess Amman. Beyond the spiritual observance, the temple's leadership and devotees embraced the festival's spirit by donating both cooked and non-perishable food items to several nearby homes, including Safe Haven, Juno Aurora, Rea Kgola Centre, Leratong Joy for One, and Makidodo Homes. Read more: The IIE's Varsity College Sandton supports Johannesburg Children's Home Guru Deena Govender, spiritual head and president of Buccleuch Temple, explained the deeper meaning behind the initiative. 'This is an initiative that we are doing in this holy and auspicious month of the Adi Masam, where we offer thanksgiving to the mother Amman. As our mother always teaches us, it's important to serve all creations.' Govender added that their endeavour is not only for the public that comes to the temple but also to feed those in need of food, charity, and assistance. 'We distribute maize meal, rice, oil, as well as large quantities of pumpkin, cabbage, and bread, including a generous donation of 120 loaves to these homes. 'This giving is not just a once-a-year event; it happens throughout the year, carried out with love and respect for all the homes we support. We thank all our patrons and donors who make this possible. This is how we give back to our community.' The festival featured not only prayers but also the serving of cooked food, which was prepared on-site and distributed immediately to the homes in need. In addition, the temple assembled food packs containing staples such as maize meal, rice, oil, flour, and other non-perishable goods to provide long-term support. Ward 109 councillor Lori Coogan praised the temple's ongoing philanthropy. 'The Buccleuch Hindu Temple runs an amazing community service. Whenever they hold prayer sessions, they prepare food not only for devotees but also for about 14 local homes, providing cooked meals and essential non-perishable items. 'This active outreach is a beautiful example of embracing culture while looking beyond oneself to help those less fortunate. Their commitment to regular giving is significant for the well-being of our community.' Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration!

Johannesburg Water's leak woes on Jan Smuts continue

Johannesburg Water's worsening water leak woes on Jan Smuts continue. Read more: Johannesburg Water is aware of a pipe leak on Jan Smuts The Gazette on July 30 reported that Johannesburg Water repairs and backfilling were completed on the Jan Smuts Avenue excavation; however, there was still a persistent leak at the site. The water utility spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala, on August 5, confirmed that necessary assessments were conducted. 'The team found that the water is coming from the McDonald's up the road along Jan Smuts. The water is coming from sleeve pipes, which are used to cover other services such as fibre, so Johannesburg Water's Unaccounted for Water (UFW) team is trying to detect the exact spot or location of the leak along the pipeline on Jan Smuts Avenue.'
