What's next for faith-based studio Wonder Project

Axios24-04-2025
Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, the Austin-based CEO of Wonder Project, is on a mission to create television and movies for a global faith-based audience.
Driving the news: Wonder Project premiered its debut series "House of David" on Prime Video on Feb. 27. The series tells the ascent of the biblical figure David, who becomes king of Israel.
"House of David" garnered 22 million viewers in its first 17 days, according to Wonder Project, and Prime Video has renewed the show for a second season.
The final episode was released April 3.
We chatted with Merryman Hoogstraten about "House of David" and what's next for Wonder Project.
This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.
What's been the most surprising reaction so far to the premiere of "House of David?"
"This story touches everybody in some way. ... There's something that I love, that my husband loves. I have younger kids, but a lot of my friends that have older kids say, 'I just sat down and had a conversation with my son or my daughter about fear being the thief, and I wouldn't have expected to have that conversation.' There's something very special about opening up conversations."
This is Wonder Project's first release. Why was "House of David" the right story to lead with?
" Our founder, Jon Erwin, has wanted to tell this story. He and his father went to Jerusalem when he was 16 years old, and he felt a connection to David's story at that moment, and has always wanted to tell a story, and started writing versions of this story 10 or 15 years ago."
Do you think there's been a shift in how audiences are consuming faith-based content?
"I think one of the things that's happened over the course of the last few years is that there have been a number of films and TV series that have come out, whether that's ' The Chosen ' or ' Jesus Revolution ' or ' Sound of Freedom,' that gave you a sense that this is a broad story that lots of people are interested in."
What's next for Wonder Project? More faith-oriented content?
"Our mission is to tell courageous stories that restore faith and things worth believing. I love this idea of restoring faith, and that can be in God, but it can also be in country and in family and entrepreneurs and coaches and teachers.
We produced a film last year that will be theatrically released by Amazon in Q4 this year called ' Sarah's Oil,' and it's a wonderful story about one of the first Black female millionaires — and she happens to be an 11-year-old girl. ... We also are working alongside Sony TriStar on a film with Nate Bargatze. Amazon greenlit a second series called ' It's Not Like That.'"
What role does Austin play in the Wonder Project's production and growth?
"I like to say that much of the faith audience lives in the heartland, and we really believe in the heartland values. I think Texas is a great place to be immersed in that.

New Niagara Falls attraction reaches for the stars

They've brought you to see the animals in Africa and Australia, digitally. Now, the owners of Hologram Zoo Niagara want to send you to space. The Space Experience is an immersive installation that brings visitors to the stars using the same holographic technology as the virtual zoo, which opened in June. Developed by Australian-based company Axiom Holographics, the attraction will create the illusion of travelling at warp speed, visiting the International Space Station and seeing a supernova up close, along with projections of the eight planets. It's at the same location as the Hologram Zoo — the corner of Victoria Avenue and Bender Street, across from Casino Niagara. Owner Marty Speelman says it's the first of several themed shows coming to the venue. 'The plan was always that every four or five months to introduce a new show,' he says. 'There's always revolving content. There's a Halloween show coming, a Christmas show coming, seasonal content as well.' As visitors walk through the attraction, motion-tracked projections and layered lighting create a sense of movement and depth around them. It makes people feel part of the environment, not just passersby, says Speelman. 'You do things like go through the tail of comet, see a star being born, you do a space walk, all those kinds of things.' While designing it, Axiom consulted with astronomers and science educators for accuracy. A narrator explains what people are seeing without 'overwhelming' detail. Speelman says the Hologram Zoo is off to a solid start, despite its location away from the main tourist hub. 'Everyone who comes through has been loving it,' he says. 'The challenge for us is, we're not on Clifton Hill. We're a couple-minute walk away. It's just getting people to know that we're there. 'We have a mix of social media marketing and we have a staff person out on the street handing out flyers.' Axiom's head of Canadian business development, John Jackson, says there are plans to open between 30 and 40 hologram zoos throughout Canada. The Space Experience is making its Canadian debut in Niagara Falls. Admission to the Space Experience is $19.99 to $24.99, with combo prices available for both attractions.

'My Best Friend's Wedding 2' Is in the Works With a Script by Celine Song

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Rom-com lovers, stand up. My Best Friend's Wedding—the 1997 classic starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Dermot Mulroney—is getting a sequel decades later. Collider reported that the project is in 'very early development' (emphasis theirs) at Sony with Celine Song writing the script. This is huge news for fans of romance, yearning, and love triangles. The original film follows Julianne (Roberts) and her best friend, Michael (Mulroney), who promised each other they'd get married if they were still single by the time they turned 28. (This cutoff didn't age well, we know.) But when Michael finally gets engaged, Julianne realizes she's actually in love with him. News of the sequel, which arrives 28 (!) years later, brings up some important questions like: What will be 2025's answer to 'Say a Little Prayer'? Can anyone remove a ring stuck on someone's finger as smoothly as Dermot Mulroney? As we wait to learn more, here's everything we know about My Best Friend's Wedding 2 so far. It's too early to say, and it's still unclear whether the sequel will bring back the original characters or which stars are confirmed to return. Celine Song, the acclaimed filmmaker and writer behind Materialists and Past Lives, is writing the screenplay, but she will not be directing, per Variety. Song has shown her expertise in romance (and love triangles) in her two films. She recently told ELLE, 'Love is meaningless unless it's unconditional. And that, to me, is non-negotiable.' While they've yet to address the recent news, the stars have opened up about a potential follow-up film. On July 25, Mulroney vaguely hinted at sequel plans. 'I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote,' he told New York Post while promoting Netflix's The Hunting Wives. Roberts even expressed interest back in 2023. When asked on Watch What Happens Live which of her films she'd like to see a sequel for, she replied, 'I think, maybe, My Best Friend's Wedding,' according to Deadline. 'Because there's so many people in it, and to see what they're doing and how Kimmy and Michael's marriage is going and…' And when host Andy Cohen asked her who Michael should have married, she added, 'Well, I mean, of course, Jules, but he married Kimmy.' Could this be a seed for the sequel? The original My Best Friend's Wedding is available to rent or buy on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+. Watch Now on Prime Video Watch Now on Apple TV+
