80-year-old files court petition seeking more footpaths on Bengaluru roads
2
Bengaluru: Enough is enough — or so he thought.
After 11 years of appeals, complaints, invoking of the RTI Act, and meeting several officials from multiple govt departments, Bengaluru resident Vijaykumar D V, 80, has filed a PIL in the high court against the state govt, BBMP and DULT, seeking to have enough footpaths in the city to make its roads safe for pedestrians.
In his PIL, Vijaykumar has urged the court that a special purpose vehicle or an empowered committee be created to enforce a judicial order to address the issue.
"Bengaluru's roads don't even guarantee the basic right to walk safely," he said. "This is not just about footpaths, it's about accessibility, equality, and dignity."
Vijaykumar had moved to Bengaluru from Chitradurga when he was 69. Once here, all he was looking forward to was the sombre somnolence of a superannuated man.
Instead, Vijaykumar was forced to risk his life and limb every single day -- just trying to get to the nearest bus stop on Tank Bund Road, Mico Layout, a walk that should ideally take no more than 10-15 minutes. With no proper footpath and only narrow drains covered haphazardly with stone slabs, Vijaykumar was forced to walk on the busy roads with traffic whizzing by.
"For more than a decade, I tried everything — from RTIs to meeting BBMP officials, but nothing changed.

Filing a PIL was my last resort," the Mico Layout resident said.
Sharing further details of the circumstances that led him to filing the PIL, Vijaykumar said: "Back in June 2014, near Binnypet Garden on Tannery Road, I saw a man using crutches and a visually challenged woman struggling to walk on the road because there was no footpath. That imagery never left me. I realised I was not alone, grappling with this ordeal."
In 2019, when he met the engineer in charge of the area and the then BBMP commissioner, the officials admitted in writing that construction of footpaths was not a discretionary matter, but a legal obligation.
Yet, nothing changed.
According to Vijaykumar, BBMP continues to prioritise projects for traffic movement. "They spend crores on roadworks, flyovers, and underpasses. But what about the basic right to walk safely? What about senior citizens and persons with disabilities? Even today, what passes for a footpath are just open drains, with some stone slabs thrown on top unevenly," he said.

Sweden jails four men in killing of hip hop star
AI- Representative Image STOCKHOLM: A Swedish court on Wednesday sentenced four men ages 19 to 22 to prison terms for their roles in the killing of a rapper in last year. Masked 26-year-old rapper C Gambino -- whose real name was Karar Ramadan, and not to be confused with American rapper Childish Gambino -- was the victim of a shooting in a parking garage in the city of Gothenburg on June 4, 2024. A total of four men were charged over the killing, two of which had been charged with "murder or aiding and abetting murder" -- but the court could not definitely establish that the two had fired the killing shots. "The shooting was akin to an execution and caused the victim severe suffering," judge Anne Rapp said in a statement. "Furthermore, the crime had its origins in a conflict between criminal networks and was committed using firearms in a public place, which is a particularly aggravating factor," Rapp added. The investigation had not shown that the rapper himself was active in a criminal network, but people in his entourage were reportedly linked to these networks, said the court. One of the four men, aged 22, was sentenced to life imprisonment for aiding and abetting murder because he had participated in the planning and preparation of the murder, notably by providing the car used by the perpetrators. The car was later burned and completely destroyed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo A 20-year-old man was found guilty of both aiding and abetting murder and aggravated harbouring of a criminal was sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison. Departmental inquiry ordered against nine BBMP health officials over alleged Covid bills irregularities
BENGALURU: A departmental investigation has been suggested against nine officials in connection with the alleged irregularities in Covid-related payments and bills in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) during the previous BJP government, the retired Justice Michael D. Cunha committee has recommended. A notice was issued to 28 officers of the corporation due to 'doubts' in the purchase of medicines and medical supplies during the COVID period. It was directed that notices be given to the corporation's engineers, doctors, and officers of the accounts department to provide explanations. After receiving the notices, 28 officials responded with documents. Following verification of the officers' replies, 19 were given a clean chit. However, the department ordered an investigation of the remaining nine officers by BBMP health officials. 'These are officials in the BBMP health department who failed to give clarity over expenses and bills, and hence the matter was escalated to the BBMP Administration Department for a departmental inquiry. If these officials fail to clarify the doubts during the probe by the administration department, action will be initiated,' said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer. Notices have also been issued to 15 private companies that supplied materials during the COVID period. The committee has suggested the recovery of Rs 13 crore paid to these 15 private companies as excess. This is not the first time BBMP health officials have landed in controversy. Earlier, Dr Kalpana, Deputy Health Officer in BBMP South Zone, was placed under suspension over approving an inflated bill of Rs 9.72 crore instead of the actual amount of Rs 2.27 crore. The amount was paid to contractors engaged in supplying food to the Indira Canteen. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Officers and Employees Association President, Amruth Raj, stated that it is time the black sheep in BBMP are shunted out. 'The officials involved in COVID and other scams in the BBMP—those involved in dereliction of duty—should be suspended and jailed to keep the BBMP clean,' said Amruth Raj.
