Departmental inquiry ordered against nine BBMP health officials over alleged Covid bills irregularities
A notice was issued to 28 officers of the corporation due to 'doubts' in the purchase of medicines and medical supplies during the COVID period. It was directed that notices be given to the corporation's engineers, doctors, and officers of the accounts department to provide explanations. After receiving the notices, 28 officials responded with documents.
Following verification of the officers' replies, 19 were given a clean chit. However, the department ordered an investigation of the remaining nine officers by BBMP health officials.
'These are officials in the BBMP health department who failed to give clarity over expenses and bills, and hence the matter was escalated to the BBMP Administration Department for a departmental inquiry. If these officials fail to clarify the doubts during the probe by the administration department, action will be initiated,' said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer.
Notices have also been issued to 15 private companies that supplied materials during the COVID period. The committee has suggested the recovery of Rs 13 crore paid to these 15 private companies as excess.
This is not the first time BBMP health officials have landed in controversy. Earlier, Dr Kalpana, Deputy Health Officer in BBMP South Zone, was placed under suspension over approving an inflated bill of Rs 9.72 crore instead of the actual amount of Rs 2.27 crore. The amount was paid to contractors engaged in supplying food to the Indira Canteen.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Officers and Employees Association President, Amruth Raj, stated that it is time the black sheep in BBMP are shunted out.
'The officials involved in COVID and other scams in the BBMP—those involved in dereliction of duty—should be suspended and jailed to keep the BBMP clean,' said Amruth Raj.

Bandh over Balasore student's death grinds Odisha to a standstill
Normal life was disrupted across Odisha on Thursday as a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the Congress and its allies brought much of the state to a standstill. The bandh was called to demand justice for a Balasore college student who died after setting herself on fire after authorities allegedly ignored her complaints of sexual harassment by a professor. Vehicle movement on several highways and major towns came to a grinding halt as Congress workers and other protesters hit the streets. Commuters also faced difficulty in travelling to and from railway stations and airports. Some railway services were also affected as rail roko agitations were also staged at multiple stations across Odisha. Business establishments were also shut across the state, and thin attendance was recorded at educational institutions and government offices due to restrictions on the movement of vehicles. In Bhubaneswar, the police detained several Congress leaders, including AICC Odisha in-charge Ajay Kumar Lallu, PCC president Bhakta Charan Das and others as they tried to breach security barricades and march towards the Lok Seva Bhawan. 'Our fight will continue till justice is done in the case. We will intensify the protest across the state. The government has been using the police force, but we will not be intimidated. The Chief Minister has to resign or take action against his minister, MP, MLA, and the Balasore SP,' said the PCC president. The party had earlier appealed to people from all sections to support the statewide bandh call to pressure the government to take action and fix responsibility. To deal with the bandh, the state government asked district magistrates and superintendents of police (SPs) to take preventive and precautionary measures to maintain law and order and to alert against any untoward incident. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers across Odisha, especially in major towns. The police also deployed high-resolution AI cameras and drones at strategic locations. Bhubaneswar police commissioner S Dev Datta Singh said there were no reports of violence during the bandh in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The ruling BJP criticised the Congress, accusing it of politicising the issue of the college student's death. Bhubaneswar MP and BJP national spokesperson Aparajita Sarangi said the Congress and BJD have no moral right to protest on the issue. 'The Congress should see how it has treated women in Odisha during its rule. We are all aware of the incidents of crime against women during the rule of the BJD. As far as the BJP is concerned, we respect women a lot,' said Sarangi at a press conference.

Indian Couple's UK Assets Worth Rs 85 Crore Attached In Real Estate Scam
New Delhi: The Mumbai zonal office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached an immovable property in the UK belonging to Vinod Tanna and his wife in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Sai Group of companies. The attachment was made on July 16 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. According to the ED, the attached assets - land and building in the UK - were acquired by Jayesh Tanna in 2017 using proceeds of crime amounting to approximately 2.07 lakh pounds. The funds were allegedly siphoned off through fraudulent means by cheating genuine investors and flat buyers during the crime period. The ED launched its investigation in 2024 based on multiple first information reports (FIRs) filed by the Mumbai Police. The FIRs named Jayesh Tanna, Deep Tanna, and others - promoters of the Sai Group - as the key accused. The Mumbai Police have already filed chargesheets in most of these cases. Investigations so far have revealed that the promoters of Sai Group misappropriated buyers' funds from their proposed redevelopment projects in Mumbai. The funds meant for construction and delivery were allegedly diverted for personal use, leading to the failure of project delivery. The scam has caused losses amounting to Rs 85.75 crore, affecting investors, original society members, and buyers across DN Nagar, Andheri, Kandivali, and Goregaon areas. With this latest action, the total value of assets attached by ED in this case stands at Rs 35.65 crore. Further investigation is underway, the ED said.

Blackmailed By Girlfriend's Father For Rs 30 Lakh, BTech Student Dies By Suicide
Last Updated: A week before the suicide, the girl's family accused Tushar of harassment; a police settlement followed with lakhs paid, but his family says the threats and pressure continued A tragic case of student suicide in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, has taken a disturbing turn with fresh allegations of blackmail and harassment. Tushar Verma, a second-year student at Ram Swaroop University, was found dead by hanging in the Lakhpedabagh locality under the Kotwali Nagar area. Initial investigations suggest that Tushar was being blackmailed and harassed by his girlfriend's father. He had allegedly demanded Rs 30 lakh, which may have pushed Tushar to take the extreme step. Following Tushar's suicide, his family conducted a post-mortem and performed his last rites. The case took a shocking twist when Tushar's sister discovered incriminating evidence on his mobile phone. The family subsequently lodged a police complaint, accusing the girl and her family of blackmail and extortion. Tushar's mother, Sushma, disclosed that her son had a love affair with a girl, supported by photos of the couple. She accused the girl's father, Majnu Patel, of repeatedly harassing their family by lodging police complaints and demanding large sums of money for settlement. Despite an initial agreement, Patel continued to demand Rs 30 lakh, exacerbating Tushar's distress. According to Tushar's uncle, the girl, Aradhya, an intermediate student, lived in Barabanki with her brother. Tushar was friends with Aradhya's brother and frequently visited their house. About a week before the suicide, Aradhya's family had accused Tushar of harassment, leading to a police-mediated settlement which allegedly involved a payment of lakhs of rupees. However, Tushar's family claims the harassment persisted. On the night of the suicide, Tushar dined with his mother and sister before going to sleep in a separate room. At around 3 AM, Tushar recorded a video on his mobile phone, detailing his ordeal and accusing Aradhya's family of extortion and mental harassment. He then used his mother's saree to hang himself in the courtyard. The police were alerted early in the morning, and they sent Tushar's body for post-mortem before his family cremated him. The family has filed a written complaint against Satish Chandra Verma and others. The local police station in-charge RK Rana confirmed that the police are investigating the matter and will register a case based on the complaint, evidence, and Tushar's pre-suicide statement.
