Bangladesh pledges full cooperation in militant probe involving its nationals
Its Foreign Affairs Ministry, in a statement, said the government is closely monitoring developments, with the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur maintaining close communication with the relevant Malaysian authorities.
"Bangladesh once again reiterates its firm stand against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism and militancy, and remains ready to extend full cooperation to the Malaysian authorities in this regard.
"The Bangladesh High Commission will provide the necessary support to Bangladeshi expatriates wherever needed," it said.
The ministry said the High Commission had immediately engaged with the Malaysian authorities and formally requested the identities of the individuals and further details regarding the allegations made against them.
"Of the arrested or detained individuals, formal charges have been filed against five in Malaysian courts. The rest are currently under further investigation or facing deportation," it added.
On June 27, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said police had detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals who were found to be directly involved in a radical militant movement based on Islamic State (IS) extremist beliefs and violent ideology.
He said the planned security operation, which began on April 24, was conducted in three phases across Selangor and Johor.
"Of those detained, five have been charged under the Offences Relating to Terrorism (Chapter VIA) of the Penal Code in the Shah Alam and Johor Baru Sessions Courts.
"Another 15 individuals have been issued deportation orders, while 16 remain under investigation for their involvement in the militant group," he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, earlier today, Bukit Aman Special Branch director Datuk Ahmad Ramdzan Daud said the Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB), which had been spreading extremist beliefs and ideology among Bangladeshi nationals in the country, has been successfully dismantled.

Freelance preacher dupes two women of RM140,000 in religious school scam
KUALA LUMPUR: Two women lost a total of RM140,000 after they were deceived by a freelance preacher into contributing to the development of a religious school in Selangor. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the state Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) received reports from the two women, both in their 40s and owners of a company. Initial investigations revealed that the victims had become acquainted with the suspect, a local man in his 30s who was known to them as a freelance preacher in 2020, he said. "The suspect deceived the victims by claiming the money was for the development of a religious school, believed to be located in Selangor. "The first victim made three money transfers amounting to RM60,000 between August and September 2020, while the second victim made a payment of RM80,000 in 2019," he said in a statement today. Hussein said the suspect's modus operandi involved using the name of a religious institution to gain the victims' trust, ultimately convincing them to hand over funds for the school's development. He added that two investigation papers have been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. "Police would like to remind the public to always be cautious of donation or investment requests that cannot be properly verified, especially those involving religious or educational institutions.

RIO DE JANEIRO: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today held discussions with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer SA to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Malaysia. The prime minister, who met with Embraer president and chief executive Francisco Gomes Neto, emphasised the government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem through investor-friendly policies, local talent development, and high-impact technology partnerships. This is in line with the aspiration to make Malaysia a major aerospace hub, particularly in Asean, which has a highly-skilled workforce and an industry ecosystem which is robust and competitive. "Our discussions touched on the potential for Embraer to invest in Malaysia, including through collaborations with Malaysian airlines. "Malaysia also welcomes Embraer's participation in developing a maintenance, repair and overhaul centre, pilot training and supply chains, as well as low-carbon emission aircraft innovations, in line with the Madani Economy framework and the National Aerospace Master Plan 2030," said Anwar.
