Freelance preacher dupes two women of RM140,000 in religious school scam
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the state Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) received reports from the two women, both in their 40s and owners of a company.
Initial investigations revealed that the victims had become acquainted with the suspect, a local man in his 30s who was known to them as a freelance preacher in 2020, he said.
"The suspect deceived the victims by claiming the money was for the development of a religious school, believed to be located in Selangor.
"The first victim made three money transfers amounting to RM60,000 between August and September 2020, while the second victim made a payment of RM80,000 in 2019," he said in a statement today.
Hussein said the suspect's modus operandi involved using the name of a religious institution to gain the victims' trust, ultimately convincing them to hand over funds for the school's development.
He added that two investigation papers have been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
"Police would like to remind the public to always be cautious of donation or investment requests that cannot be properly verified, especially those involving religious or educational institutions.
