Owaisi & Rijiju engage in public spat over ‘benefits & protection' to minorities under Modi govt
Owaisi's argument with the BJP leader over Muslims under Modi rule comes at a time when the Hyderabad MP was seen as having embraced the Centre's stance against Pakistan post Pahalgam.
Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi got into a public spat on Monday with Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, contesting the latter's claim that minorities get more benefits and protection than the majority community in the country.
'India is the only country where minorities get more benefits and protections than the majority community!', declared Rijiju in a post on X on Monday morning, quoting his interview to a news publication.
Owaisi, the Hyderabad MP, responded with a lengthy, anguished post in the afternoon, terming the religious minority group as having become 'hostages' in the country.
'Is it a 'benefit' to be called Pakistani, Bangladeshi, jihadi, or Rohingya every single day? Is it 'protection' to be lynched? Is it protection that Indian citizens were kidnapped and pushed into Bangladesh? Is it a privilege to watch our homes, masjids, and mazaars being bulldozed illegally? To be made socially, politically, and economically invisible? Is it an 'honour' to be the target of hate speeches from no less than the Prime Minister of India? India's minorities are not even second-class citizens anymore. We are hostages.'

Owaisi accused the Modi government of discontinuing the Maulana Azad National Fellowship and limiting other scholarships 'because they benefited Muslim students'.
The AIMIM chief also mentioned the controversial Waqf Amendment Act in a bid to debunk the senior BJP leader's claim.
'If you want to talk about 'favours', answer this: Can Muslims be members of Hindu Endowment Boards? No. But your Waqf Amendment Act forces non-Muslims on to Waqf Boards—and allows them to form a majority.'
Within an hour, the minister responded with a counter question: 'Ok… How come minorities from our neighbouring countries prefer to come to India & our minorities don't migrate? Prime Minister Modi's welfare schemes are for all,' Rijiju said, insisting that the 'schemes of the Ministry of Minority Affairs provide additional benefits to minorities'.
The bitter spat between the BJP minister and the AIMIM MP, a prominent face representing Muslims, comes at a time when the latter emerged as a poster boy for the Hindu Right, after his feisty defence of India and the Modi government during Operation Sindoor.
Long branded as 'BJP's B-team', the Hyderabad MP's strong attacks on Pakistan's leadership and him joining a delegation of MPs to diplomatically defend Modi government's operation abroad further expanded the impression in political circles, especially those championing Muslim demands and issues.
One such party, the RJD, has recently spurned the AIMIM's offer to join forces for the Bihar polls, with party MP Manoj Kumar Jha stating that Owaisi's base is limited to Hyderabad.

KPCC president's post decision left to high command: Minister Satish Jarkiholi
BENGALURU: While his name is doing the rounds for Congress state president, Yamkanmaradi MLA and PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi spoke exclusively to TNIE and addressed speculation about his potential appointment. 'It is left to the party high command to decide, but we need to remember that it is very important for the party that all sections have to be taken along,' he said. 'I believe in Basavanna, Ambedkar and Kuvempu's concept of equality and have practised it in my political life.'' Responding to criticism that the Congress was failing to attract youngsters in the below-18 age group nationally, as compared to rival BJP, Satish Jarkiholi said the party has proved it wrong in the Shiggaon bypoll where the Congress candidate defeated a former BJP chief minister's son. In Chikkodi constituency too, the Congress managed to attract the younger segment in large numbers, rivalling the BJP in the parliamentary seat. 'The Shiggaon model of inclusiveness can be used across the state to attract the youth in larger numbers, if the high command gives me an opportunity,' he said. Asked about the 2028 assembly polls in which the Congress is expected to be pitted against the collective might of the NDA (BJP+JDS) and some have voiced criticism about the party's performance in such a scenario, he expressed confidence that it would do well. 'We now have about 140 seats, and need just 120 to form the government, we will do well in 2028 and retain our seats,'' Jarkiholi said. On what he would do for the party's success in North Karnataka if he becomes KPCC president, he said he would be the first president from that region in about 15 years after Dr G Parameshwara, Dinesh Gundu Rao and DK Shivakumar. He said the party has done well in North Karnataka this time, and they will have to ensure that the numbers are retained in 2028 too. Asked about how to increase the party's dominant Lingayat community vote share, considering this has been spoken about at several party fora, he said that just announcing Basavanna as the cultural icon of the state might not be enough. 'We received sizeable Lingayat votes this time as Lingayats are voting Congress in greater numbers than before,' Jarkiholi said. With the party's national Ahinda push after the National Backward Classes meeting in New Delhi, where they are looking at a possible Mandal 2.0, he said, 'Congress has always enjoyed the support of Ahinda, there may have been some communication issues in expressing it.'' During Mandal 1.0, the Congress had come out a big loser. About his reputation as a rational leader, and asked if he would push rationalism into the party space if he became president and also criticism that rationalism may not have many takers in the public space, he said, 'We will stick to the party's priorities in the party space and rationalism in personal space.''

After questioning by HC, Centre withdraws order for 6 cuts in Udaipur Files
NEW DELHI: The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that the Central Government has decided to withdraw its directive recommending six cuts in the film Udaipur Files. This move came after the HC questioned whether the Centre had the authority to order such changes while exercising its revisional powers. Following this development, the Delhi High Court disposed of two petitions that sought to halt the release of the film. It directed all involved parties to appear before the appropriate revisional authority on Monday and instructed that a decision be made by Wednesday. Udaipur Files is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, who was killed by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, allegedly over a social media post supporting an ex-BJP leader. However, the film has drawn sharp criticism. Islamic scholar Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed—one of the accused in the murder case—petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the film's release, arguing it was inflammatory and communal. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Madani, claimed the film spreads hatred and unfairly targets the Muslim community, warning against allowing hate speech under the guise of free speech. Earlier, the Supreme Court permitted the government to review the movie. A review panel subsequently recommended changes before release. The film's producers then approached the court to challenge the HC's stay on the release. Madani contends the movie generalises a criminal act, portraying an entire community as complicit or supportive of terrorism. Meanwhile, the murder case is ongoing in a Special NIA Court, with hearings set to resume after the summer recess.
