Owaisi & Rijiju engage in public spat over ‘benefits & protection' to minorities under Modi govt

The row over minorities and their welfare in the country under the Narendra Modi-led NDA government also comes ahead of the crucial Bihar assembly polls to be held in 3-4 months. In Bihar too, the NDA is in power, under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar. Muslims constitute around 17 percent of Bihar's population, one of the highest proportions in the country.
Owaisi's argument with the BJP leader over Muslims under Modi rule comes at a time when the Hyderabad MP was seen as having embraced the Centre's stance against Pakistan post Pahalgam.
Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi got into a public spat on Monday with Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, contesting the latter's claim that minorities get more benefits and protection than the majority community in the country.
'India is the only country where minorities get more benefits and protections than the majority community!', declared Rijiju in a post on X on Monday morning, quoting his interview to a news publication.
Owaisi, the Hyderabad MP, responded with a lengthy, anguished post in the afternoon, terming the religious minority group as having become 'hostages' in the country.
'Is it a 'benefit' to be called Pakistani, Bangladeshi, jihadi, or Rohingya every single day? Is it 'protection' to be lynched? Is it protection that Indian citizens were kidnapped and pushed into Bangladesh? Is it a privilege to watch our homes, masjids, and mazaars being bulldozed illegally? To be made socially, politically, and economically invisible? Is it an 'honour' to be the target of hate speeches from no less than the Prime Minister of India? India's minorities are not even second-class citizens anymore. We are hostages.'
You are a Minister of the Indian Republic, not a monarch. @KirenRijiju You hold a constitutional post, not a throne. Minority rights are fundamental rights, not charity.
Is it a 'benefit' to be called Pakistani, Bangladeshi, jihadi, or Rohingya every single day? Is it… https://t.co/G1dgmvj6Gl
— Asaduddin Owaisi (@asadowaisi) July 7, 2025
Owaisi accused the Modi government of discontinuing the Maulana Azad National Fellowship and limiting other scholarships 'because they benefited Muslim students'.
The AIMIM chief also mentioned the controversial Waqf Amendment Act in a bid to debunk the senior BJP leader's claim.
'If you want to talk about 'favours', answer this: Can Muslims be members of Hindu Endowment Boards? No. But your Waqf Amendment Act forces non-Muslims on to Waqf Boards—and allows them to form a majority.'
Within an hour, the minister responded with a counter question: 'Ok… How come minorities from our neighbouring countries prefer to come to India & our minorities don't migrate? Prime Minister Modi's welfare schemes are for all,' Rijiju said, insisting that the 'schemes of the Ministry of Minority Affairs provide additional benefits to minorities'.
The bitter spat between the BJP minister and the AIMIM MP, a prominent face representing Muslims, comes at a time when the latter emerged as a poster boy for the Hindu Right, after his feisty defence of India and the Modi government during Operation Sindoor.
Long branded as 'BJP's B-team', the Hyderabad MP's strong attacks on Pakistan's leadership and him joining a delegation of MPs to diplomatically defend Modi government's operation abroad further expanded the impression in political circles, especially those championing Muslim demands and issues.
One such party, the RJD, has recently spurned the AIMIM's offer to join forces for the Bihar polls, with party MP Manoj Kumar Jha stating that Owaisi's base is limited to Hyderabad.

Dhankhar raises eyebrows as he leaves office; Trump slaps 'friend' Modi's India with 25% tariffs

Hello readers! We are back with a new edition of DH Political Theatre. The previous week witnessed debates and chaos in the Parliament as the Monsoon Session kickstarted with the much awaited discussion on Operation Sindoor, giving a chance to the Opposition to bombard the government with even more questions. The Opposition also took on the Modi govt on the US tariff row, indicating it to be the start of "bure din" as 25 per cent US tariffs came into effect for India. Let's dive in deeper and see what else happened in India this on Operation Sindoor, and the unanswered questions .Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Lok Sabha the killings of three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) 'A-category' terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack. In the House, questions were raised by the Opposition regarding the silence on why Operation Sindoor was stopped midway. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the government for the violence in Manipur, Delhi riots, and Pahalgam, all of which happened under Shah's watch. In his 100-minute reply during the special discussion, the PM put up a brave front by saying India "taught" a lesson to those behind the Pahalgam attack, and stated that no country stopped India from carrying out the operation, hinting at Donald Trump's claims of having brokered the ceasefire. Trump has repeated his claim of ending the conflict between India and Pakistan nearly thirty times by saying he 'helped settle' the tensions using trade as a sharp attack, Rahul Gandhi accused Modi for carrying out Operation Sindoor to protect his "image". He also took a dig at him vis-a-vis Trump, saying, "We can't have a PM who doesn't have the courage to call Trump a liar, who can't use the Army as it is supposed to be."Amid all this, the silence of certain leaders made loud statements. "Maun vrat, maun vrat": Shashi Tharoor said outside the Parliament when asked about participating in the 16-hour special discussion. Tharoor has publicly praised Modi on Operation Sindoor, and participating in the debate would have meant 'attacking the government'. .'Kaun banega next VP?'.After the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the question on who will be the frontrunners for becoming the next Vice President has become Election Commission has informed that polls to pick the VP will take place on September 9. With that, the I.N.D.I.A. bloc will be exploring a consensus candidate. Dhankhar cited health concerns as the reason for his exit, but Congress senses there is "far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye", and that there are "deeper reasons" behind the the ruling BJP-led NDA enjoying a majority in the electorate, it is likely to consider probable names soon. The BJP has a large pool of leaders to choose from for the were even speculations among politicians in Kerala that Shashi Tharoor may be chosen by the BJP. However, time will tell if BJP will choose an "outsider" for the crucial Constitutional post..'SIR: Attack on Democracy'.Several Opposition leaders demanded the rollback of Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar. The MPs raised slogans and protested against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in SIR as "vote chori", the Opposition protested in both Houses of Parliament against the exercise, alleging that the EC's initiative was aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly polls. Following this, the Supreme Court said it was overviewing the process of SIR as judicial authority, and would immediately step in if there was mass exclusion of all this, a bizarre event has rattled Bihar's administrative machinery, as a residence certificate was issued to a dog named "Dog Babu".Independent MP Pappu Yadav slammed the administration, and called out on how a dog is getting a residence certificate, while ordinary people cannot get row: 'Bure din for India?'.The United States announced 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports, and signed a trade deal with Pakistan. Trump called India a "friend", however mounted a sharp attack, and discontent over India's ties with Russia. The two countries can can take their "dead economies down together," Trump said. Following the tariff deal, Rahul Gandhi took a jibe at PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and claimed everybody except them knows that the Indian economy is "dead". Rahul had said a trade deal with the US will happen and Trump will define it, while "Modi will do what Trump tells him to do".Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav too noted that this is the beginning of "bure din" for India. In the midst of the tariff talks, the White House believes Trump should be awarded the Nobel Prize, as he "ended several conflicts around the world", saying it is well past rekindles 'Dalit CM' debateCongress President Mallikarjun Kharge recalled how he lost the CM's post in 1999 to S M Krishna, which seems to have rekindled the 'Dalit CM' debate within the party's state unit. Deputy CM D K Shivakumar backed Kharge and said that there is nothing wrong if a senior leader like him is expressing his emotions. Kharge's remark sparked a fresh debate on the long-standing demand for a Dalit CM in Karnataka, a hotly debated matter within the Congress party, an issue on which senior leaders and Ministers Parameshwara and H C Mahadevappa have openly spoken in the past. The BJP took no time in picking on Kharge's statement. Attacking the Congress for "tokenism" when it comes to "Dalit empowerment", Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka said, "Every time a Dalit rises in Congress, the Gandhi family ensures he is pulled down."More from KarnatakaRahul Gandhi has the evidence regarding the modus operandi for "vote theft" during last years LS polls, claimed CM Siddaramaiah, adding that Rahul will be in Bengaluru on August 5 to participate in a protest and submit a representation to the EC officials in Karnataka. Deputy CM D K Shivakumar too cited two instance of voter additions during the 2023 Assembly polls. He claimed that Congress wants to "save democracy" and does not want the EC to be a part of the political process. .What happened elsewhere? In a development that took Maharashtra politics by surprise, the Thackeray cousins were seen together at the iconic Matoshree, the home of former Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. This was a second meet up of Raj and Uddhav in a fortnight's time, intensifying the alliance buzz. Meanwhile in West Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee led her party to launch a second "Bhasha Andolan" to protest the "linguistic terror" she accused the BJP of unleashing on Bengali-speaking migrant workers in BJP-ruled states. .These were all the political updates of the week. KPCC president's post decision left to high command: Minister Satish Jarkiholi

BENGALURU: While his name is doing the rounds for Congress state president, Yamkanmaradi MLA and PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi spoke exclusively to TNIE and addressed speculation about his potential appointment. 'It is left to the party high command to decide, but we need to remember that it is very important for the party that all sections have to be taken along,' he said. 'I believe in Basavanna, Ambedkar and Kuvempu's concept of equality and have practised it in my political life.'' Responding to criticism that the Congress was failing to attract youngsters in the below-18 age group nationally, as compared to rival BJP, Satish Jarkiholi said the party has proved it wrong in the Shiggaon bypoll where the Congress candidate defeated a former BJP chief minister's son. In Chikkodi constituency too, the Congress managed to attract the younger segment in large numbers, rivalling the BJP in the parliamentary seat. 'The Shiggaon model of inclusiveness can be used across the state to attract the youth in larger numbers, if the high command gives me an opportunity,' he said. Asked about the 2028 assembly polls in which the Congress is expected to be pitted against the collective might of the NDA (BJP+JDS) and some have voiced criticism about the party's performance in such a scenario, he expressed confidence that it would do well. 'We now have about 140 seats, and need just 120 to form the government, we will do well in 2028 and retain our seats,'' Jarkiholi said. On what he would do for the party's success in North Karnataka if he becomes KPCC president, he said he would be the first president from that region in about 15 years after Dr G Parameshwara, Dinesh Gundu Rao and DK Shivakumar. He said the party has done well in North Karnataka this time, and they will have to ensure that the numbers are retained in 2028 too. Asked about how to increase the party's dominant Lingayat community vote share, considering this has been spoken about at several party fora, he said that just announcing Basavanna as the cultural icon of the state might not be enough. 'We received sizeable Lingayat votes this time as Lingayats are voting Congress in greater numbers than before,' Jarkiholi said. With the party's national Ahinda push after the National Backward Classes meeting in New Delhi, where they are looking at a possible Mandal 2.0, he said, 'Congress has always enjoyed the support of Ahinda, there may have been some communication issues in expressing it.'' During Mandal 1.0, the Congress had come out a big loser. About his reputation as a rational leader, and asked if he would push rationalism into the party space if he became president and also criticism that rationalism may not have many takers in the public space, he said, 'We will stick to the party's priorities in the party space and rationalism in personal space.''

After questioning by HC, Centre withdraws order for 6 cuts in Udaipur Files

NEW DELHI: The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that the Central Government has decided to withdraw its directive recommending six cuts in the film Udaipur Files. This move came after the HC questioned whether the Centre had the authority to order such changes while exercising its revisional powers. Following this development, the Delhi High Court disposed of two petitions that sought to halt the release of the film. It directed all involved parties to appear before the appropriate revisional authority on Monday and instructed that a decision be made by Wednesday. Udaipur Files is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, who was killed by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, allegedly over a social media post supporting an ex-BJP leader. However, the film has drawn sharp criticism. Islamic scholar Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed—one of the accused in the murder case—petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the film's release, arguing it was inflammatory and communal. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Madani, claimed the film spreads hatred and unfairly targets the Muslim community, warning against allowing hate speech under the guise of free speech. Earlier, the Supreme Court permitted the government to review the movie. A review panel subsequently recommended changes before release. The film's producers then approached the court to challenge the HC's stay on the release. Madani contends the movie generalises a criminal act, portraying an entire community as complicit or supportive of terrorism. Meanwhile, the murder case is ongoing in a Special NIA Court, with hearings set to resume after the summer recess.
