PM POSHAN Scheme covers about 11 cr kids in over 10.35 lakh schools: Centre
PM POSHAN scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme implemented in partnership with the States and UTs for providing one hot cooked and nutritious meal to all children studying in Bal Vatika (just before class I) and classes I to VIII of government and government-aided schools. It aims to provide nutritional support and enhance the school participation of students. 'The scheme serves 29,22,160 students studying in Balvatika; 6,58,16,610 students in classes I to V; and 4,12,07,772 students in classes VI-VIII,' said Pradhan, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. 'The Budget Estimates of the Scheme are about Rs 12,500 crore, and 100 per cent foodgrains to the tune of 26 lakh MTs at an approximate cost of Rs 9,000 crore have been supplied by the Government of India through Food Corporation of India (FCI),' he added.
In addition, the Centre in April announced enhancing the 'Material Cost' of the PM POSHAN Scheme by 9.50 per cent. Under the new rates, applicable across all the states/UTs from May 1, the Central government bears the additional cost of approximately Rs 954 crore in FY26. Further, Pradhan also informed that more than 24 lakh Cook-cum-Helpers (CCHs) are engaged under the Scheme. Of these, over 90 per cent are women. 'Under the Scheme, 9.11 lakh (97 per cent) Kitchen-cum-Stores (KCS) have been constructed against the sanctioned 9.41 lakh KCS all over India,' the Union Minister said. The Scheme also grants a provision of 5 per cent of the total recurring budget as the flexi component to be used by the States/UTs as per their requirement. It may be used for setting up School Nutrition Gardens and provision of Supplementary Nutrition interventions viz., chikki, eggs, milk, fruits, and additional food items, etc., in identified districts.

11 years of Malin: 23 villages under threat of landslide, rehabilitation of six completed
Every year on July 29, Budhaji Damse, founder of the Shashwat Trust visits the erstwhile Malin village in Ambegaon taluka to pay respects to the over 100 people who had died in the landslide that had erased the village 11 years ago. However, Damse has other worries —just 4 km from Malin is the hamlet of Pasarwad, whose residents literally live under the Sword of Damocles. 'Post Malin, Pasarwadi was one of the 23 villages that was meant to be rehabilitated due to the possibility of landslides in the area. While the land for rehabilitation has been identified, Pasarwadi is yet to be rehabilitated. I have relatives living there as well as workers of our Trust,' he said. Pasarwadi is not alone after Malin the Geological Survey of India (GSI) had surveyed the district to identify landslide prone villages in the district. Twenty three villages spread across Ambegaon, Khed, Velhe, Maval, Bhor and Junnar taluka were identified as landslide prone with the GSI suggesting their rehabilitation. Damse — whose trust has been working with tribal farmers across Ambegaon, Junnar and Khed taluka — said only the village of Megholi in the taluka has been rehabilitated at a different place 'For Parawadi, the land has been identified but the physical rehabilitation is yet to happen. This year the rainfall has been within range so far, so there has been no problem for these villages,' he said. Located across the ranges of the Western Ghats, all the 23 villages are located at an elevation. Given the typography of these areas, the villages have been identified as landslide prone. District Collector Jitendra Dudi told The Indian Express that of the rehabilitations of 23 villages, six have been completed. 'Five of these villages are located in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district,' he said. Dudi said the district had received Rs 3.65 crore for rehabilitation. 'Another survey was done when it was revealed that two of the villages identified were not in the landslide prone area so they were taken off the list,' he said. The other villages, he said, have demanded for permanent rehabilitation, but work is yet to be completed. 'Work on preparing the plan for the rehabilitation is in its final stages,' he said. Malin was wiped out from the face of the earth on June 29, 2014, when a portion of the hill overlooking the small tribal village slid over it. Over 100 people had died, which included women and children, many of whom were either sleeping or preparing to get ready. The District Collectorate had rehabilitated survivors at a separate area and the rehabilitation was termed ideal. Damse said many of the survivors have now taken up non-farming activities as their livelihood. 'Over all things, the process has been good. People have no complaints so far,' he said.

HC stays Morjim beautification work over green concerns
Panaji: The high court on Tuesday ordered an immediate stay on the beautification work being carried out on Morjim beach through Goa Tourism Development Corporation. The HC issued a notice to govt after a petitioner showed the court pictures purportedly of the site where sand dunes were being destroyed with heavy machinery. Captain Gerald Fernandes, a former Indian Army officer and resident of Morjim, filed the PIL seeking urgent intervention of the HC to halt the ongoing work at the ecologically sensitive Morjim beach. This site is an officially designated turtle nesting area for the endangered olive ridley turtles , safeguarded under the Wildlife Protection Act and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 2011. Fernandes, represented by advocate Om D'Costa, submitted to the HC that the beach beautification project, valued at Rs 9.8 crore by GTDC, is proceeding without mandatory statutory approvals and without a construction licence from the panchayat. The flattening of the sand dunes on the beach is being carried out, the plea said. The development activity poses an imminent and irreparable threat to the turtle nesting habitat, sand dunes, and natural ecosystem of Morjim beach, the plea said. He stated that beaches and their attendant sand dune vegetation are beautiful in themselves and don't need concrete props from any external agency. 'In fact, the sand dunes and sand dune vegetation have major ecological functions and provide ecosystem services,' Fernandes submitted to the HC. He said, 'The project proponent is actively committing to destroying Goa's natural tourism assets instead of protecting them.' GTDC has been involved in launching a similar project to beautify Baina beach at Vasco, which was cancelled by the HC. A second beach beautification project at the same location a decade later was also cancelled on the grounds of violation of the CRZ notification, which is pending before the Supreme Court after GTDC challenged it, Fernandes said.
