(Reuters) -Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani scored one goal and made another as her side cruised into the knockout stages of the women's European Championship with a 3-0 win over Poland on Tuesday that eliminated the Poles.
The win also guaranteed Germany's berth in the last eight after they beat Denmark earlier on Tuesday, with the Danes joining Poland in exiting the competition.
The Germans and Swedes occupy the top two spots in Group C on six points and meet in Zurich on Saturday to decide who will win the group after Sweden's aerialbombardment from the wings proved too much for the Polish defence.
Asllani and Madelen Janogy both hit the woodwork with early headers before striker Stina Blackstenius nodded home a cross from her captain in the 28th minute to break the deadlock, and the Swedes continued to send a stream of crosses into the box.
Playing in her 201st senior international, Asllani made no mistake in the 52nd minute as she ghosted through the middle before burying Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's cross, and substitute Lina Hurtig added a third goal with yet another header, this time from a corner, to round out the scoring in the 77th minute.

Soccer-England coach Wiegman proud of her team's bouncebackability

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group D - England v Netherlands - Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich, Switzerland - July 9, 2025 England manager Sarina Wiegman looks on REUTERS/Matthew Childs ZURICH (Reuters) -England manager Sarina Wiegman put her team's remarkable ability to bounce back from a bad game down to unwavering confidence and an even-keeled demeanour, no matter how great the stakes. The Lionesses have not lost two consecutive games since Wiegman took over as coach in 2021, but on Wednesday they faced the Netherlands in a must-win game at Euro 2025 after starting the tournament with a disappointing 2-1 loss to France. True to form, their response was an emphatic 4-0 thrashing of the Dutch to put the defending champions' European campaign back on track. Captain Leah Williamson said it was her toughest test in an England shirt. Georgia Stanway called it a cup final. "I think the players reflect really well on always review games and when things are not going well, we don't make it a disaster," Wiegman said. "So France was not nice, but at the end it is one game and you want to do better the next game. And I think it's really important also that you come together, you have conversations together, because it's a team sport, and I think that's what the team does really well." Chelsea's Lauren James, doubtful ahead of the tournament after three months out with a hamstring injury, scored twice including a rasping strike into the top corner. "We see her do that in training all the time," said Alessia Russo, whose assist for the goal was one of three on the night. "When you give her the ball in those kinds of areas, you know she can hit it off both feet as well. "I want to find LJ in those areas as much as I can, I think we all do so as soon as she hit it, I think we all knew it was going in. She's a special player and a great talent." Stanway described James as "class". "She brings something different," the midfielder said. "You give LJ the ball and you know she's going to run through everybody and try to get her shot off. If LJ's confident, that's what we want, because we want her to go out, enjoy herself and play with freedom." (Reporting by Lori Ewing, editing by Ed Osmond)

Soccer-James double helps England bounce back at Euro 2025 with 4-0 win over Dutch

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group D - England v Netherlands - Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich, Switzerland - July 9, 2025 England's Lauren James in action with Netherlands' Jackie Groenen and Esmee Brugts REUTERS/Matthew Childs ZURICH (Reuters) -England's Lauren James scored twice, while Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone also found the net to put the defending women's European champions firmly back in the driver's seat at Euro 2025 with an emphatic 4-0 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday. Four days after a lacklustre 2-1 loss to France made Wednesday a must-win match, England came out firing on all cylinders in front of a festive crowd that included Britain's Prince William. James put England on the scoresheet in the 22nd minute when goalkeeper Hannah Hampton picked out Alessia Russo with a stunning long ball. Russo slipped it to James on the edge of the box who worked the ball onto her left foot before unleashing a screamer into the top corner. Stanway doubled England's lead seconds before halftime when the Dutch struggled to clear the ball and the midfielder was there to fizz a first-time shot past wrong-footed goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar. An unmarked James completed her double in the 60th with an easy shot from inside the box, and Toone added more misery for the Dutch seven minutes later. Russo held up the ball in the penalty area before sending it to a running Toone, who calmly slotted home. England play tournament debutants Wales in their final Group D game on Sunday. Soccer-Sweden's Asllani gives away special shirt after fan's heartfelt plea

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group C - Poland v Sweden - Stadion Allmend, Lucerne, Switzerland - July 8, 2025 Sweden's Kosovare Asllani celebrates after the match REUTERS/Piroschka Van De Wouw/File Photo ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (Reuters) -Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani had every intention of keeping the shirt she wore for her 200th cap in her side's 1-0 win over Denmark in their Women's Euros opener last week, but a woman's pleas from the stands as she left the pitch put paid to that idea. "She was my mum's age and I thought, 'If she really wants it, she can have it'. I have so many shirts at home anyway," Asllani told reporters after her side progressed to the knockout rounds following a 3-0 win over Poland on Tuesday. "I wanted to keep it, but when the woman's voice sounded so desperate as she called out, I decided I wanted to give it away." The 35-year-old, whose parents are from Kosovo, said she was a little surprised when she heard the fan, identified by Swedish newspaper Expressen as a 60-year-old Geneva resident from Kosovo named Flora, called out to her. "It was nice, I knew she was from Kosovo, she called to me in Albanian. She was my mother's age and very sweet, she deserved it," Asllani said. The fan said that the Swedish captain, who created one goal and scored another in her side's win over Poland, was her favourite player and that she had a plan for what she wanted to do with the shirt. "I'm going to take the shirt with me to Kosovo, where her parents are from, to share my joy with her fans there," Flora told Expressen. (Reporting by Philip O'ConnorEditing by Toby Davis)
