England's rising talents poised for Euro 2025 spotlight, says Fran Kirby

Straits Times2 days ago

– Deprived of some of their most experienced players, England's women team will need new faces to shine at Euro 2025 but former midfielder Fran Kirby believes that the young guns can step up.
Kirby, 31, announced her international retirement earlier in June, following star goalkeeper Mary Earps in May, while Chelsea defender Millie Bright made herself unavailable for selection.
The trio have a combined 218 international caps and started every match when England became European champions in 2022.
Kirby's surprise decision came after being told by coach Sarina Wiegman that she would not make the 23-strong squad for the tournament in Switzerland in July.
While it was clearly a painful end to her England career and took a while for her to digest, Kirby is excited to watch new heroines emerge from the squad – such as her on loan Brighton & Hove Albion teammate Michelle Agyemang, along with Grace Clinton and Jess Park.
'It's really exciting to see them grow and obviously, it's going to be very different for them going into this tournament... and seeing how they develop, how they learn,' said Kirby, speaking at a London event organised by leading global ticket exchange company viagogo.
'You have to give these girls an opportunity at some point. You have to give them an opportunity to go to a major tournament and to experience it and to learn from it because you're looking at the next six, seven, eight, nine, 10 years with these girls.
'Giving them experience now will only help push them forward going into the next few tournaments.'
Agyemang scored within a minute of coming off the bench on her senior debut against Belgium in April and Kirby says the 19-year-old attacker could make a big impact.
'I think Michelle, we can see her qualities. She's very strong, she's very direct, she's very powerful. When she strikes the ball, I don't think there are many goalkeepers that will save it, to be honest,' she said.
'She wants to learn. She wants to listen to you, she wants to take your advice, and that's really important, I think.
'All three of them are going to be massively important for England over the next 10 years.'
Kirby, who made 77 England appearances, said she had set her sights on bowing out after Euro 2025. But now she will be only a spectator.
She recalled the conversation she had with Wiegman while on England duty, saying: 'Having the conversation with Sarina, the decision for me was like, 'Okay, I want to get this out.' I wanted to just get out and get it done with and just forget about it, basically,' she said.
'I wanted to stay for the rest of the camp and I wanted to tell the girls in the changing room to their faces, so I could thank them all for everything and kind of wish them good luck.
'Some sad moments, but now excitement , and that's fine .' REUTERS

Toulouse edge out Bordeaux to secure third straight Top 14 crown

PARIS - Toulouse claimed their third consecutive Top 14 title and a record-extending 24th French championship by beating Bordeaux Begles 39-33 after extra time in a dramatic final on Saturday. Thomas Ramos kicked two penalties in the last five minutes for Toulouse after Bordeaux's Maxime Lucu had converted a penalty on the hooter to take the game into extra time at 33-33. A try from Anthony Jelonch and a brace from Jack Willis put champions Toulouse in control of the match but Damian Penaud, Matthieu Jalibert and Guido Petti also crossed the tryline to keep Bordeaux in touch. Petti and Pierre Bochaton were shown yellow cards and Toulouse, missing talisman Antoine Dupont, won their 11th consecutive final, a year after routing Bordeaux Begles 59-3 in the title match. "Emotions are unbelievable. The scenario is crazy", Jelonch said on France TV. "We were exhausted after 80 minutes, we played 100. When you see all the players' emotions, this one is the most beautiful of all." Bordeaux's Jalibert said he was proud of his side. "We were strong but the coin didn't fall on our side", the fly-half said on France TV. "I think we can keep our heads up. I'm proud of the team because after last year's disappointment, we wanted to come back here." After Toulouse and Bordeaux traded penalties, the holders capitalised on Petti's yellow card to score the opening try when Jelonch found a gap in the defence. Bordeaux responded quickly, however, when Penaud latched on to Maxime Lucu's kick to touch down. Willis restored Toulouse's lead with a powerful finish from a driving maul just before halftime and the English flanker crossed for a second try after Jalibert had dotted down under the posts for Bordeaux. Lock Petti kept the game alive when he went over from a wide position for Bordeaux before Lucu sent the game into extra time. France internationals Romain Ntamack and Louis Bielle-Biarrey did not reappear after halftime, the former due to a shoulder injury while the latter was playing his first match after suffering a concussion. Brooks Koepka doesn't return after smashing tee marker at LIV Golf event

Brooks Koepka was six-over-par after eight holes at LIV Golf Dallas on June 27 when he vented his frustration. PHOTO: AFP CARROLTON, Texas - After a meltdown and withdrawal in the first round, Brooks Koepka did not return to LIV Golf Dallas in Carrolton, Texas, on June 28. The five-time major winner posted a birdie on his opening hole on June 27, before things went swiftly downhill with a triple-bogey on both the par-4 4th and the par-5 7th. After eight holes, he was already six-over-par. After hitting a tee shot on the par-4 9th, Koepka hammered the tee marker towards the crowd in a show of apparent frustration. He posted a bogey on the 9th then withdrew, citing illness. There were no reports of injuries in the crowd. Koepka could have returned to play this weekend, though per LIV rules, his scores would have counted only towards the team standings. Koepka was replaced by reserve player Luis Carrera for the remainder of the first round. FIELD LEVEL MEDIA Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Lewis Hamilton hails ‘world class' Ferrari performance

PHOTO: AFP SPIELBERG, Austria - Lewis Hamilton hailed a 'world class' performance by Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on June 28, after Charles Leclerc took second place on the starting grid and he followed up in fourth. The session equalled Ferrari's best of the season in Monaco, even if Leclerc was still more than half a second slower than McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third. 'It's a fantastic result. The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend,' seven-times world champion Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season from Mercedes, told Sky Sports television. 'My last lap wasn't perfect. I think if I'd finished it, I would have been second, so there are lots of positives to take out from that session. 'Also, I think it's been the best day operationally, particularly through qualifying. How the team operated. Just timings, the information we're getting in terms of traffic and positioning on track, I think was really the best. It was proper world class.' Ferrari have yet to win a grand prix this season, although Hamilton won a sprint race in China in March, and the pressure has been mounting on team boss Fred Vasseur as their hopes of a first title since 2008 recede. Hamilton has yet to finish higher than fourth in a regular grand prix for Ferrari and has now gone 12 races without a podium. The team, runners-up in 2024, are now third overall and behind McLaren and Mercedes. 'Ultimately, we continue to pull together and protect each other and block out all the noise, and just keep our heads down,' said Hamilton. 'It's an incredible team. I'm working with Fred, we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place, but step by step. It can't be done in one go. 'We've just got to keep working on it but I'm really happy with the progress we are making.' REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
