Accident averted as Gujarat Mail damages track change point near Vadodara

Hindustan Times20-05-2025
New Delhi, The Ahmedabad-bound Gujarat Mail damaged track change points at Vadod station in the Vadodara division, allegedly due to negligence, an initial probe report has suggested.
The joint report, viewed by PTI, has been signed by the Permanent Way Inspector and Signal Department.
Sources said that the Operating Department disagreed with the probe and refused to sign it.
The probe further said that the damage of the track change points on Monday impacted the train operation.
According to the report, first, an engine was supposed to cross the said point at 3.40 am but the staff realised that the point failed to operate.
The station master and pointsman tried to rectify it and manually clamped it by 4.10 am, however, they did it wrongly, it added.
Railway sources said that minutes later, Gujarat Mail arrived, which was allowed to cross the point with a caution speed of 10 kmph under the observation of the pointsman.
The probe said that the moment it crossed the point, the pointsman heard an abnormal sound and showed the red flag to the loco pilot signalling him to immediately stop the train.
"The staff, then, opened the wrongly fitted clamp and operated the point to normal position for the train to pass. The point was again reclamped and the train restarted to its destination at 4.40 am at a caution speed," a source said.
"However, instead of making a smooth go-ahead, it damaged the point badly," the probe suggested.
"The said point was rectified by changing several components during the day by restricting the train traffic multiple times," it added.
A section of railway staff has demanded strict action in connection with the matter.

RCB stampede victim's earrings ‘stolen during post-mortem', alleges mother

Bengaluru, Jul 24 (PTI) The mother of a 14-year-old girl who died in the June 4 stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB victory celebrations has filed a police complaint, alleging that her daughter's belongings, including a pair of gold earrings, were stolen during the post-mortem. Speaking to reporters after lodging the complaint on Thursday, Ashwini, mother of the deceased girl Divyanshi, said the earrings—gifted by the family—had deep emotional value and were missing when her daughter's body was returned after the autopsy. The complaint was filed with the Commercial Street Police station in the city. 'She (Divyanshi) did not remove them for one year. They were gifted by our family. The earrings hold deep emotional value and I wanted to save those earrings as a keepsake," Ashwini said. The woman alleged that despite approaching hospital authorities, including the dean, and visiting multiple police stations in the days following her daughter's death, she received no proper response. 'We tried filing a complaint with another police station, the hospital, and we had met the dean and others. They have agreed that the theft happened, but they didn't hand them over. It's not about the value of the earrings. We hold them dear as she was very fond of them," she said. Commercial Street Police said a case has been registered under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to theft. 'We are in the process of investigating the allegations," a police official told PTI. The stampede on June 4 near Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left several injured. The incident occurred during a victory parade organised by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise after their successful IPL campaign, when a massive crowd gathered outside the venue, leading to a stampede. Parliament security breach: Delhi HC seeks police reply on accused bail plea

New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) Observing disruption of Parliament was the best way to create terror in the country, the Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the police to response to the bail plea of an accused in the December 2023 Parliament security breach case. A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Shalinder Kaur was hearing the bail plea of accused Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D in the case. Manoranjan's counsel said the act of opening smoke canisters inside Parliament while sloganeering did not amount to terrorist act as the smoke was not obnoxious and the intention of the accused was to only highlight unemployment and not create terror. The bench, however, said, 'The best way to create terror in India is to disrupt the Parliament. You disrupted the Parliament." The court asked Delhi Police to file a status report to Sharma's bail plea and posted the hearing on October 8, when it would also take up Manoranjan's plea petition in which it issued notice earlier. The accused challenged a trial court's order denying them bail in the case. In a major security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, accused Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D allegedly jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas from canisters and sloganeered before they were overpowered by some MPs. Around the same time, two other accused — Amol Shinde and Neelam Azad — allegedly sprayed coloured gas from canisters while shouting 'tanashahi nahi chalegi (dictatorship won't work)" outside the Parliament premises. The high court in July granted bail to co-accused Neelam Azad and Mahesh Kumawat. While Sharma contended he was entitled to be released on bail on the ground of parity with the other two accused, Manoranjan called the allegations against him 'vague" with Delhi Police wrongly attributing Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act charges against him. The bench said there was no parity since those granted bail had protested outside Parliament whereas the present accused were inside it. The trial court noted Neelam Azad, Manoranjan D, Sagar Sharma, Amol Dhanraj Shinde, Lalit Jha and Mahesh Kumawat already had the knowledge about the threat given by designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu for targeting Parliament on December 13, 2023. While four were taken into custody from the spot, Jha and Kumawat were arrested later.
