Rangers ‘raid Brighton's academy to lure rising teenage star' but watch another major talent sign for Newcastle
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have raided Brighton's highly-rated academy to land a promising member of their Under-18 squad, it's being reported. It's being claimed that the 16-year-old, who's been gaining plenty of attention for his exploits at Under-18 level, has been persuaded to come north in one of the first coups for the new regime at Auchenhowie. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 The Rangers training centre 3 Zebedee Lawson is rated a player with major potential Credit: James Boardman 3 Alfie Hutchinson is joining his former Gers team-mate Oliver Goodbrand at Newcastle The winger scored three goals and got one assist for Brighton's Under-18s this season and Football Insider claim that the Gers have got the deal over the line. Less promising news for the Gers, however, is the continuing exodus of some of their existing Scottish stars. We told you how Scotland age group left back Oliver Goodbrand was poised to join Newcastle Utd. And now the Magpies appear to have got a deal over the line for one of his team-mates for club and country in the form of Alfie Hutchinson. As recently as 12 months ago, the Ibrox men splashed out compensation to take the highly-rated Hutchinson from Hearts amid a raft of Premier League interest. But the lure of St James' Park has proved too strong for the powerful striker, who can also play out wide. Upheaval is part of life in the Ibrox side's academy and earlier this month the Ibrox men announced the exit of as many as 16 products of the academy. A statement from Rangers read: "Rangers Academy can today confirm the departure of a number of players who will now continue their footballing journey elsewhere. "Lewis Budinauckas, Jay Hogarth, Jacob Pazikas, Jack Harkness, Kristian Webster, Leyton Grant, Kerr Robertson, Darren McInally, Grant Leitch and Harry Weir are all moving on. The club's new US investors are desperate to get a better return from their expensively assembled academy products - although one time caretaker boss David McCallum likely to continue as academy chief. Sir Sean Connery's secret £1 MILLION investment in Rangers revealed McCallum served as caretaker manager for the club back in November 2021, leading the team to a Premier Sports Cup semi-final defeat against Hibs between the spells of Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The head of academy position at Auchenhowie has been vacant since Zeb Jacobs left for Feyenoord last year. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Major Lawrence Shankland update as Hearts jet out to Spain for pre-season training camp
HEARTS are jetting off to Spain this morning for their pre-season training camp WITHOUT striker Lawrence Shankland. Jambos boss Derek McInnes had hoped to persuade him to commit to the Tynecastle club in a further round of talks this week. Advertisement 2 Lawrence Shankland is a key Hearts transfer target Credit: Alamy 2 Derek McInnes and his squad jet out to Spain today Credit: Shutterstock Editorial And he made it clear he wanted him to join his players on their summer trip. But Del's discussions have failed to reach a positive outcome and further doubt over Shankland's future at Hearts has now grown. The 29-year-old is out of contract so free to move elsewhere and has options in both England and abroad. McInnes has been reluctant to put a timescale on when he needs the Scotland striker to make his mind up - but has warned he won't wait much longer. Advertisement He remains convinced staying put is Shankland's best option and has made several pleas to the ex-Dundee United and Aberdeen forward in an attempt to secure him for next season. But with the Jambos players flying to Spain early this morning without Shankland as part of the party, the chances of him signing a new deal appear to be plummeting. McInnes has already added striker Claudio Braga in this window, with Elton Kabangu's loan from USG made permanent. While the door on Shankland is unlikely to be closed completely on the back of his decision to stay put in Scotland, the Jambos are ready to crank up their search for his replacement in the coming days. Advertisement The striker was last sighted undergoing some additional pre-pre-season training in Dubai in the company of none other than Rangers captain James Tavernier. He's had a busy summer already, after tying the knot with his new wife Nicole at a plush Scottish wedding venue at the end of last month. Rangers transfer special including Coady latest, why Turgeman move could be off & why Shankland's a no-brainer He's also been linked with a move to West Brom in England. Links between him and Rangers have gone cold recently with a new broom at Ibrox since the Andrew Cavenagh/49ers Enterprises takeover, but the sight of Shankland training with Tavernier made many Gers fans curious enough at least to see if something could still happen on the transfer front.
