Average wages for working Canadians outpaced inflation on a year-over-year basis in April, according to data from Statistics Canada.
April's earnings sheet, which was released on Thursday morning, reports Canadians earned $1,297 per week on average . That's a 4.4 per cent increase year-over-year, while inflation increased just 1.7 per cent in the same period.
Average wages also rose 0.8 per cent compared to the month prior.
Real estate, information, finance see largest gains
Certain Canadian industries have fared better than others in terms of wages.
Among the sectors that saw the largest gains were information and cultural industries, where average weekly wages grew just over 10 per cent. Canadians in that sector earned $1,875 per week, on average.
Real estate also got a bump over the last year. Average weekly earnings grew 9.7 per cent for an average of $1,361 per week, or about $120 more than the same time last year.
Employees in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction made $2,492 per week on average – the highest yield of any recorded sector – and saw those wages rise about five per cent from the year before.
Job vacancies drop
Year-over-year declines were recorded in health care and social assistance (-23.9 per cent), accommodation and food services (-21.7 per cent), and construction (-13.8 per cent).
That contraction was felt most in B.C., where vacancies fell 8.5 per cent, Alberta (-9.4 per cent), New Brunswick (-16.8 per cent), and Newfoundland and Labrador (-26.3 per cent).
Vacancies were little changed in the remaining six provinces.

June auto sales up from last year but show declining momentum: report

New cars, left, are parked at a car dealership on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024 in Quebec City. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jacques Boissinot TORONTO — DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says June vehicle sales were up from a year earlier but still showed declining momentum. The consultancy says it estimates there were 178,000 light vehicle sales in the month, up 5.3 per cent from a weak June last year. It says however that sales for the month are still down notably from previous highs for the month, including volumes above 200,000 a month in 2017 and 2018. The June sales figure also projects to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.81 million units, the lowest so far this year. DesRosiers managing partner Andrew King says in a statement that the sales total shows continued slowing momentum in recent months compared with a strong start to the year. The consultancy says economic concerns over a trade war with the U.S., along with rising unemployment and declining GDP, mean the market performance was about as good as could be expected. --- This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 3, 2025.

(Source: Nick Moore/CTV News Atlantic) The New Brunswick government is seeking public feedback as it works to overhaul the property tax system, which was one of the Liberal's campaign promises during the 2024 provincial election. 'New Brunswickers want and deserve a property tax system that is transparent and provides fairness and stability moving forward,' said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy in a news release. 'This overhaul is intended to support a long-term transformation that is sorely needed.' The province says it will review the assessment and property tax systems and consider reform options as needed. New Brunswickers can provide feedback by participating in a survey, which is open until Aug. 10. It is available online and by calling 1-833-724-0088. 'Offering the opportunity to contribute feedback is essential to building a system that reflects the needs and values of New Brunswickers,' said Legacy. 'I encourage residents to take the time to participate.' For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
