"Subsequently, the Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD Mumbai, initiated site preparation activities, including provisions for electrical raw power, internet, drinking water, and other basic infrastructures required at the site for the installation of the C-Band Doppler Weather Radar," said Jitendra Singh, the Union minister of state (independent charge) for earth sciences, in his letter to BJP Rajya Sabha member Ajeet Gopchade on May 15.
Following up on Marathwada's Doppler Weather Radar requirement, Gopchade submitted a fresh inquiry to the earth sciences ministry on March 4, requesting an update on the facility's implementation status. "Going by the latest developments, the DWR will become a reality soon for Marathwada. We will do the necessary follow-ups with different govt authorities to ensure the desired facility comes up at the earliest," he told TOI.
The installation aims to provide precise weather forecasts to farmers and disaster management authorities. Despite requests from certain experts for an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar, citing superior performance, the ministry has confirmed its decision to proceed with a C-Band Doppler Weather Radar installation in the region.
Maharashtra currently has four operational Doppler Weather Radars. These include Mumbai's S-Band Doppler Weather Radar, commissioned on Aug 25, 2015, along with installations in Nagpur (S-Band), Solapur (C-Band), and Veravali, Ratnagiri (C-Band).
