Telecom reach: BSNL to install 4,000 towers in Naxal-affected Chhattisgarh, MoS Telecom Pemmasani says move will boost digital inclusion

) will install 4,000 new mobile towers in Naxalite-affected and remote regions of Chhattisgarh, Union Minister of State for Telecom and Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said during his three-day visit to the state.
The initiative, aimed at bolstering digital connectivity in underserved areas, will be implemented in phases after receiving requisite clearances from security agencies and the forest department, PTI reported.
'The central government is working on a plan to install 4,000 new BSNL towers in the Naxalite-affected and remote areas of Chhattisgarh to strengthen digital communication,' Pemmasani said in Raipur while reviewing various central government schemes including the Aspirational District Programme and flagship telecom and rural development projects.
Highlighting BSNL's efforts to extend 4G coverage nationwide, he added, 'BSNL is providing high-quality 4G services across the country, and with this expansion, we are realising the mission of delivering digital connectivity to the last village in the country.'
The minister said development in Naxalite-hit regions is progressing in 'mission mode,' with focused strategies being adopted to ensure doorstep delivery of services.

'Schools in these regions are being digitised, enabling students to better prepare for competitive exams like JEE and NEET. In addition, special facilities are also being provided for differently-abled students, which is a sensitive and inclusive initiative,' he added.
Pemmasani chaired a high-level review meeting in Raipur, which was attended by officials from the Department of Rural Development, Department of Posts, Department of Telecommunications, and BSNL.
He expressed satisfaction over the implementation of central schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), PMAY-Gramin, and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), according to an official statement.
He also praised the contribution of self-help groups (SHGs) in driving inclusive growth in the state and cited the 'Pink Auto' initiative as a notable effort to empower women.
'SHGs are being linked with various schemes to provide them financial assistance, training, and marketing opportunities. This is helping women become self-reliant and increasing opportunities for self-employment,' Pemmasani said.

Billionaire Elon Musk-led satellite communications company Starlink will be limited to a maximum of 20 lakh connections in India, Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said on Monday, downplaying concerns over its impact on state-run BSNL and other telecom operators. The Minister of State for Telecom made the remarks while speaking on the sidelines of a BSNL review meeting. 'Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services,' the minister said. What Will Satcom Services Do? Satcom services are expected to target rural and remote areas where BSNL is known to have a significant presence..A government official mentioned that the limit on Starlink connections is due to its existing capacity. The minister said that the upfront cost for satcom services will be too high and the monthly cost may be around Rs 3,000. The minister also said that BSNL 4G rollout is complete and it does not plan to increase tariffs as of now. 'We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned,' he said. What Minister Said On BSNL Future Plans? The minister said that BSNL has seen a 20-30 per cent increase in revenue in the first quarter of the current fiscal year due to the rollout of 4G services and technology is settling down. 'Earlier, there were some technical issues but over 90 per cent of them have been sorted out. There were issues around power stations. 30,000 power stations have been replaced with an expenditure of around Rs 600-700 crore,' Pemmasani said, adding that improvement in power supplies has resulted in higher uptime for BSNL networks and enhanced customer's experience. 'Each circle is being given individual targets in terms of increasing subscriber base,' he said, adding that BSNL has had a lot of legacy issues that are being resolved now. When asked about the status of Chinese equipment in BSNL, the minister said that the government plans to continue using indigenous technologies in the state-run firm and it will gradually phase out 2G and 3G equipment and do away with the need for maintenance of that equipment. BSNL has installed 2G and 3G technology using some of the equipment from Chinese vendors, including ZTE. (With Inputs From PTI)

Full-fledged mining to start from Oct
Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said in the assembly that mining activities will begin on a larger scale in Goa from Oct this year. Sawant said that an auction for 12 mining blocks has been tendered, and mining has commenced in the case of three, while four other blocks are in the process of being auctioned and will be operational soon. 'Others are awaiting approvals from the director general of mines and safety, etc. We have carried out 29 e-auctions so far,' the chief minister said. 'We are trying to start sustainable mining in the state in a full-fledged manner at the earliest. We will auction the remaining four blocks, and two major blocks will become operational.' He said, 'We are serious about the restart of the mining industry. I am fully aware of the problems faced by people in the mining belt of the state.' The CM said unidentified dumps on govt lands will also be auctioned. He said that the restart of mining in South Goa is facing some hurdles due to the requirement of forest clearances, as most of these mines are within forest areas. Quepem MLA Altone D'Costa said that the people of South Goa are waiting eagerly for mining to restart in a sustainable manner. 'You first said the loss was Rs 35,000 crore and then brought it down to only Rs 350 crore,' he said. 'But more than 50% of the recovery is still pending.' Sawant, however, said that a committee has been formed to carry out the recovery and added that much of the pending amount has been recovered.

Consumers owe Rs 350cr in dues, says power minister
Panaji: Dues amounting to Rs 350 crore are pending from power consumers in the state. Govt consumers are the biggest defaulters, with Rs 142.7 crore pending, followed by commercial consumers who owe govt Rs 122.8 crore, and domestic consumers who owe Rs 85.4 crore. The information was provided by power minister Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar in a written reply in the assembly. His reply stated that 6,551 consumers owe the department more than Rs 1 lakh in dues as of June 2025. These include around 3,000 public services consumers, which comprise govt departments. These also include 300 electricity department connections of its various offices. Another 1,525 defaulters are commercial consumers, 1,718 are domestic consumers, and 500-odd are industrial consumers. Of the total 6,551, 2,968 connections are active. When asked about the steps taken to recover amounts from major defaulters, Dhavalikar said a 15-day notice is served to the consumers to pay arrears, failing which the connection is temporarily disconnected. If the temporary disconnection lasts for six months, the department serves another notice to the defaulter, after which the connection is permanently disconnected if dues are not cleared. Finally, the matter is referred to the revenue recovery court. At a public hearing in May, conducted by the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), to discuss the proposed power tariff hike, consumers appealed to the JERC to keep the tariff hike on hold until the department recovers dues from govt departments and other defaulters first.
