Airtel lags Jio in May net additions even as overall subscriber base rises
Jio added 2.7 million mobile and FWA users in May to reach 472.4 million, while Airtel gained just 275,000 subscribers, Trai data show New Delhi Reliance Jio continued to dominate the mobile segment in May, adding 2.7 million net subscribers and expanding its combined mobile and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) base to 472.4 million, PTI reported, citing data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). This gave Jio a market share of 40.92 per cent. In contrast, Bharti Airtel added just 275,000 users — about 10 per cent of Jio's net additions — bringing its total subscriber base to 390 million and a market share of 33.61 per cent. Debt-laden operators continue to lose subscribers Subscriber growth among private players was offset by declines for debt-ridden and state-owned firms. Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost 274,000 subscribers, while BSNL and MTNL shed 135,000 and 470,000 users respectively. Reliance Communications also saw a marginal decline, losing 30 users. India's total telecom subscriber base rose to 1.207 billion in May, up from 1.203 billion in April. The overall net subscriber gain stood at 4.36 million, of which Jio and Airtel jointly contributed 4.35 million—accounting for 99.84 per cent of all additions. Jio leads in wireline gains; MTNL, BSNL post losses The wireline segment continued to grow, with fixed-line connections increasing 3.34 per cent to 38.6 million in May. Jio led this category as well, adding 1.276 million subscribers and strengthening its position in the broadband and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) markets. Airtel followed with a net addition of 99,000 users. Other contributors included Tata Teleservices (4,890), Vi (1,795), and STPL (252). However, MTNL reported the largest loss in the wireline segment, shedding 66,834 subscribers, followed by BSNL with a decline of over 46,000. Broadband subscriber base nears 1 billion mark Jio retained its lead with 494.4 million broadband subscribers across mobile and wireless segments. Airtel followed with 302 million, while Vi recorded 126.6 million. BSNL had 34.3 million, and Atria Convergence Technologies had 2.32 million subscribers. Shift in 5G FWA classification impacts figures Interestingly, the 5G FWA subscriber count dipped slightly from 7.5 million in April to 7.4 million in May. This decrease followed Jio's reclassification of over 1 million FWA-UBR (Unlicensed Band Radio) users under its FTTx fixed-line category, indicating a shift in its reporting methodology. Airtel trails Jio in net user additions, Vi loses more
Reliance Jio far outpaced Bharti Airtel on net subscriber additions in May, while state-run BSNL and cash-strapped Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to lose subscribers, showed data issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday. Jio added 2.7 million net subscribers in May, while Airtel added 275,621 wireless subscribers, Trai data showed. In the same period, Vi lost 274,103 subscribers while BSNL's user base fell by 1.35 overall wireless subscribers increased by 2.09 million in May, including 242,152 in rural areas. Total user base stood at 1.16 billion as of May-end. Jio closed the month with a wireless user base of 475 million, followed by Airtel at 390 million, and Vodfone Idea at 204 million. BSNL's wireless user base stood at 90 million. Trai data also showed a fall in 5G fixed-wireless access users to 7.4 million as of May 31, from 7.5 million in April, led by a reclassification of users of FWA-UBR (fixed wireless access unlicensed band radio) as fixed wireline customers. As a result, Jio reported a loss of 286,331 customers in the 5G FWA category, but actually gained 1.03 million customers, as per the reclassified data. Airtel reported a gain of 182,458 5G FWA users. Despite the loss in users, Reliance Jio continued leading the growing 5G FWA segment with 5.85 million, while Bharti Airtel had 1.54 million users as of May 31, Trai data showed. Jio led the market in terms of wireless broadband subscribers with 480.96 million users, with Airtel the second-largest at 292.89 million, followed by Vi at 126.67 terms of active subscribers, both Reliance Jio and Airtel reported a rise in May, while Vi and BSNL saw a decline in subscribers who were active on the date of peak VLR (visitor location register) in May. Reliance Jio had the highest number of active subscribers as against its total wireless subscriber base, at 462 million (97.25% of its total subscribers), followed by Airtel with 386.84 million (99.13% of total subscribers). Vi's active user base fell to 172.87 million (84.56%), and BSNL had the lowest proportion of active subscribers at 57.85 million (63.73%). Active, or visitor location register (VLR) data, put out by Trai every month, indicates the number of mobile users regularly using a mobile network. As of May, Jio continued to lead the Indian market for wireless services with a 40.92% market share, followed by Airtel at 33.61%, Vi at 17.61%, and BSNL at 7.82%. May saw 14.03 million requests for mobile-number portability, increasing the cumulative requests to 1.14 billion in May, since MNP was implemented.

Jio, Airtel add 99.8% of new telecom subscribers in May as Vi, BSNL lose users: Trai
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel together accounted for over 99.8% of all new telecom subscribers in May, helping India's total telecom subscriber base rise marginally to 120.7 crore, according to the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). The sector added a total of 43.58 lakh net subscribers in May, with Jio and Airtel contributing a combined 43.51 lakh. The total subscriber base had stood at 120.3 crore in April, according to PTI. Subscriber gains were largely offset by losses reported by Vodafone Idea (Vi), BSNL, MTNL and Reliance Communications. While Jio added 27 lakh mobile users, taking its total wireless base to 47.51 crore and market share to 40.92%, Airtel added 2.75 lakh new users, growing its mobile base to 39 crore and a 33.61% market share. By contrast, Vi lost 2.74 lakh subscribers, BSNL 1.35 lakh, MTNL 4.7 lakh and Reliance Communications 30 mobile users. India's mobile subscriber base grew to 116.84 crore, while landline connections rose by 3.34% to 3.86 crore. In the fixed-line segment, Reliance Jio led with a net addition of 12.76 lakh new subscribers, followed by Airtel with 99,000, Tata Teleservices with 4,890, Vi with 1,795 and STPL with 252. ‘Something big is coming': BSNL teases flash sale for Indian consumers
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has hinted at an upcoming flash sale in India, generating buzz among its user base with a cryptic teaser on social media. The state-run telecom operator is yet to confirm the official date for the sale, which is described as 'coming soon', but early indicators suggest it may include free data offers, discounted broadband plans, or other incentives. In a brief promotional video shared on X, BSNL announced, 'Something big is about to land! Are you ready to experience the unexpected?' The company also invited followers to guess the nature of the offers that may be rolled out during the sale. The announcement follows a difficult period for the telecom provider. According to the latest figures released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), BSNL recorded a net loss of 0.2 million subscribers in April. More significantly, the number of active users fell by 1.8 million during the same period, underlining the challenges the company faces in retaining and expanding its customer base amid fierce competition. In an effort to regain lost ground, BSNL has recently launched a series of initiatives. Earlier this month, it officially announced the rollout of its 5G network in India, branded as 'Q-5G'. The new service is positioned as a symbol of the 'power, speed, and future' of BSNL's technological roadmap. Additionally, the company has begun doorstep delivery of its prepaid and postpaid SIM cards, a convenience already offered by leading private players like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. This new service allows consumers to either acquire a fresh BSNL connection or port their existing number, with the SIM card delivered directly to their homes. To initiate the process, users are required to complete a self-KYC form. For further assistance, BSNL has made available a toll-free helpline at 1800-180-1503.
