Foundation features ‘Sape Ambassadors' at Borneo Native Fest in KL
KUCHING (May 23): Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) is now at the Central Market in Kuala Lumpur for the three-day Borneo Native Festival (BNF), running until May 25.
The foundation's participation at this cultural and heritage gathering marks its first appearance outside Sarawak, bringing together its 'Sape Ambassadors'.
'Our participation at this festival is very much awaited and the stage performance is our first away from home,' said a YPS spokesman in a statement today.
'The Sape Ambassadors have their followers in Sarawak and they have been well received for their unique stage presentation.'
The 'Sape Ambassadors' have gained prominence in Sarawak after numerous public performances, including at the Borneo Cultural Festival, an international tourism event held in Sibu last year, and also their last concert at the closing of the annual Kaul Mukah Festival earlier this month.
The 'Sape Ambassadors' are a group of talented musical youths, trained in sape, the traditional boat lute of the Orang Ulu.
'These 'Ambassadors' comprise youths representing all races in Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia, including representation from the Orang Asli community.
'They adorn their colourful traditional costumes playing the sape to the beat to local favourite songs in all languages in Malaysia including Mandarin, Kadazan-Dusun, Orang Asli and Tamil, besides the various Sarawak's indigenous languages.
'Their songs are local favourites, including oldies and other community hits like the Iban's 'Berkikis Bulu Betis', Kadazan-Dusun's 'Anak Kampung' and the Mandarin version of 'Mei Lan Wo Ai Ni'.
'This makes for a unique musical presentation; hence, the adoption of the stage theme 'Rhythm of Unity',' the spokesman added.
Backed-up by Amir Hamzah from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), the 'Sape Ambassadors' stand as one of YPS signature projects in its nationwide 'Unity in Diversity' promotion.
These Ambassadors are performing at the BNF in KL's Central Market today, from 4pm to 5pm.
The spokesman added: 'YPS will have a booth located at the festival site where a mini exhibition featuring YPS's vision and mission and its activity promotions.
'We also invite everyone to a special 'Jum Kelaka Sarawak' (Let's Speak Sarawak) session, taking place at the booth throughout the festival where you can polish up your colloquial Sarawak dialects.'

#SHOWBIZ: US influencer Tanner Martin announces his own death before passing away at 30
NEW YORK: American influencer Tanner Martin recently passed away at the age of 30 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. The news of his death was shared in a pre-recorded farewell video, posted on Wednesday by his wife, Shay Martin, on Instagram and TikTok, according to the New York Times. In the emotional video, the Utah-based Tanner announced his own passing, beginning with the poignant words: "Hey, it's me, Tanner. If you're watching this, I am dead." He explained that he recorded the message before his final moments so his wife wouldn't have to bear the burden of announcing his death while grieving. For several years, Tanner and Shay had garnered hundreds of thousands of followers by openly sharing his cancer journey, which included rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, multiple major surgeries, and even a visit to his future gravesite. His death came just weeks after the birth of his daughter, AmyLou, conceived after the couple chronicled their in vitro fertilisation journey. Reflecting on his life, Tanner said with a smile, "I had a heck of a life. Life was awesome. I really enjoyed it while I was here." In the video, Tanner urged his followers to pray for his family, specifically mentioning, "Please pray for Wright and our little baby girl." He also used the affectionate nickname "Jiaozi" for AmyLou, which means "dumpling" in Mandarin, a nickname born from their first ultrasound. In another pre-recorded video, Tanner revealed he did not have life insurance. As his final wish, he requested his followers to support his family by contributing to a GoFundMe campaign set up for his wife and daughter. "If you feel like helping out, it would mean the world to us," he said. Shay shared the farewell video with the caption, "May the force be with you from our angel force ghost. See the next video for his wish."

‘Gou Li Hao Xi' – Groundbreaking musical explores mental health with warmth and heart
THE stage is set for a powerful and moving theatrical experience as Gou Li Hao Xi makes its much-anticipated debut at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC) this September. A first-of-its-kind original Mandarin-language musical by KK Wong, the production boldly addresses mental health through uplifting music, dance, and heartfelt storytelling. Blending vibrant choreography, soul-stirring melodies, and human-centred narratives, Gou Li Hao Xi seeks to destigmatise emotional struggles such as anxiety, depression, and burnout—issues still often unspoken within Asian communities. Instead of a sombre tone, the musical embraces joy, compassion, and hope to encourage healing and connection. At the heart of the show lies a simple yet resonant message: 'Take the first step, and love will be there—every day is a new beginning.' This 2025 production marks KK Wong's first role as executive producer, and sees the return of acclaimed director Ryon Lee to the stage after 15 years. Music is helmed by celebrated duo Jiahui Wu and Chan Yi Yi, with each composition and movement crafted to offer solace and strength to those battling emotional turmoil. The star-studded cast includes Cheryl Lee, Orange Tan, Rickman Chia, Loo Aye Keng, Remon Lim, Wayne Cai, Kopi Lim, Reno Lee, and Terry Ong—who also co-produces the show. Adding fresh energy are four rising stars—Richard Tan, Olio Tan, Andrew Lim, and JY Lim—selected through a nationwide audition. 'In a time where emotional exhaustion is a growing concern, we need art that heals,' said KK Wong. 'Through musical theatre, we hope to spark conversations, deepen empathy, and offer audiences both entertainment and comfort.' In a show of social commitment, part of the proceeds will be donated to the Life Line Association Malaysia, a national mental health support hotline. Gou Li Hao Xi will run from 26 to 28 September 2025, with tickets priced between RM88 and RM228. A limited-time early bird promotion offers up to 25% off with the code EB25, valid until July 9 on
