Iraqi and Afghan migrant smugglers jailed over deadly small boat crossing

The National30-06-2025
Seven Afghans and two Iraqi Kurds have each been sentenced to seven or eight years in jail over the deadly capsizing of a boat carrying migrants from France to England in 2022.
A French court heard the small, inflatable boat left France in freezing conditions early on December 14 of that year, carrying people from Afghanistan, Albania, India and Senegal.
Four died and another four were reported missing at the time after the vessel capsized a few kilometres from the English coast with only one of the bodies identified – an Afghan man. Rescuers saved 39 people, while those missing were presumed dead.
An investigation by the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch found the boat was 'wholly unsuitable and ill-equipped' for the hazardous journey. The water temperature was 11°C and the air temperature minus 4°C, too cold for a surveillance aircraft that would usually patrol the channel to fly. Cold-water shock can occur in anything below 15°C and can lead to swift loss of life.
The UK government has vowed to crack down on people smuggling gangs operating in the Channel, with crossings at a record high for this point in the year, totalling 18,518.
A court in the French city of Lille sentenced three men to eight years in jail on Monday. They included an Afghan being tried in absentia and thought to be the mastermind of the trafficking operation.
It handed the rest seven-year sentences, including two Afghan brothers accused of financing the scheme.
A 10th man who is being held in Belgium will face trial at a later date.
A British court had already sentenced a Senegalese minor who drove the boat to nine years in jail, French prosecutors said.
The investigation found several people had heard a loud bang that sounded like the boat had been punctured shortly before departure.
The smugglers told the passengers not to worry and that the boat was the only one available for the crossing.
But the sea was rough and there were not enough life jackets – all those who died were not wearing one, survivors said.
After about an hour the boat was filling up with water and when panicking passengers stood up to get the attention of a passing ship, the hull of the capsizing boat burst under the weight of the water. All the passengers fell into the cold sea.
The accident was one of the deadliest in the Channel in recent years. In November 2021 in another deadly incident, 27 people were killed off the French coast in a case that has yet to reach court.
At least 17 people have died attempting the perilous Channel crossing from France to Britain this year, after a record 78 last year.
The French and British governments have been holding talks over how to tackle the small boats crisis but have yet to reach a solution. France is due to start intercepting boats up to 300 metres from the coast and the two countries are said to be nearing agreement on sending asylum seekers back to France under certain conditions.

Dubai Police extradite two international crime suspects to France in 2025

Dubai Police have extradited two internationally wanted individuals to French authorities for their involvement in transnational organised crimes, including attempted fraud and trafficking in narcotics and psychotropic substances. The Force apprehended the suspects after international red notices were issued, as they appeared on the wanted lists of INTERPOL and the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol). Dubai Police stated that the wanted individuals have been handed over to French authorities as part of their ongoing efforts to combat crime under the Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the Dubai Public Prosecution, to ensure that all legal and judicial measures are taken. INTERPOL Red Notice suspects handed over by Dubai Police to French authorities The handover follows the International Cooperation Department of the UAE Ministry of Justice receiving international arrest warrants for the suspects, which is the central authority for handling international cooperation requests. With this extradition, the total number of wanted individuals handed over to France by Dubai Police in 2025 rises to ten. These individuals are involved in international crimes, including murder, leading criminal organisations, money laundering, armed robbery, and drug trafficking. Dubai Police confirmed that this extradition aligns with their commitment to strengthening cooperation and collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide. Their objective is to combat transnational organised crime in all forms and establish a global security framework focused on crime prevention and the exchange of security practices, ultimately enhancing community safety and security. 'The search and investigation teams, alongside the raid units and specialised divisions within the General Department of Criminal Investigation, successfully apprehended all wanted individuals shortly after receiving the red notices. This success was achieved through dedicated field efforts and the application of advanced technology at the Data Analysis Centre, which enabled precise tracking, location identification, and ultimately ensured their handover to justice,' the Force said in a statement according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

Lebanese militant Georges Abdallah lands in Beirut after four decades in French prison

A Lebanese pro-Palestinian militant jailed in France over the murder of two diplomats has returned to Beirut to a fanfare from his supporters, after more than four decades behind bars. Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, 74, was released in the early hours of Friday and deported from France. His flight from Paris arrived in Beirut around 2.30PM local time. One of the first sounds Abdallah may have heard was the intense noise of an Israeli drone hovering over the Lebanese capital, reported The National 's correspondent. Abdallah served a life sentence for complicity in the murders of the diplomats − one American and one Israeli − in Paris, in 1982. The Paris Court of Appeal ruled last week that Abdallah, who has been imprisoned in France since his arrest in 1984, could be released on the condition that he leave the country and never return. Several hundred supporters gathered to greet the pro-Palestinian Lebanese activist, some waving Lebanese Communist Party and Syrian Social Nationalist Party flags. Some banged on drums and held up Palestinian flags and a banner reading, 'Georges Abdallah is free − a Lebanese, Palestinian and international freedom fighter on the road to liberating Palestine '. The crowd cheered upon hearing the aircraft carrying Abdallah had arrived. No one from the government was present but some members of the Lebanese Parliament were. Osama Saad, leader of the Popular Nasserist Organisation, was at arrivals, as was the family of Abdallah. The Lebanese Army had worked to ensure that the entrance and exit of Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport remained passable. A reception will later be held in his home village of Qoubaiyat in Akkar in north-east Lebanon. Abdallah was detained in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for his involvement in the murders of US military attache Charles Robert Ray and Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov. Abdallah's role in the murders remains unclear. The weapon used to kill the diplomats was found in a hotel room that he used in Paris, but he has never admitted any connection to their deaths, Abdallah's lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset said. The French court's ruling is 'both a judicial victory and a political scandal', said last week Mr Chalanset, who maintains that his client has spent the longest time in prison for acts related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 'He has a family, he has a village. He'll live with the support of his brothers,' Mr Chalanset said.

Dubai extradites two men to France on fraud and drugs charges

Two men have been arrested by Dubai Police and extradited to France to face fraud and drug trafficking charges in their home country. The suspects were detained after red notices were issued against them by Interpol and the EU's Europol, the Dubai force said on Friday. The two men were handed over to authorities in France, where they are accused of serious crimes including attempted fraud and trafficking narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. 'Search and investigation teams launched a tracking operation based on red notices,' Dubai Police said in a statement. 'The suspects and their homes were identified and monitored until they were arrested.' The force said it was committed to supporting a strong global security network to combat crime. The International Co-operation Department at the UAE's Ministry of Justice received the arrest warrants and handed the suspects over to France, in conjunction with the emirate's police and public prosecution. 'These suspects were involved in organised international crimes including murder, money laundering, armed robbery, drug trafficking and crime gang leaders,' the force added. The latest operation brings the number of wanted suspects extradited to France by Dubai Police to 10 in 2025. This week, The National reported how a former Molodovan justice minister arrested in the UAE was extradited to France to face fraud charges. Vitalie Pirlog was arrested in June at the request of French authorities who had asked Interpol to issue a red notice against him, state news agency Wam reported. On July 13, the force arrested and extradited three alleged Belgian crime gang leaders facing human and drug trafficking charges in their home country. The three suspects – Mathias Akyazili, Giorgi Faes and Othman El Ballouti – were listed in the most-wanted category by Interpol and Europol.
