India's GDP growth intact amid global uncertainty

New Delhi: India's economic growth remains on track amid global uncertainties, with an improvement in high frequency indicators for both services and manufacturing, and consumption picking up momentum during Q1/FY26 versus Q4 of FY25, according to a Bank of Baroda (BoB) report released on Friday. High frequency data available for the first quarter (Q1) so far shows that consumption demand appears to be improving compared with the last quarter. This is reflective in the rise in steel consumption growth, increase in electronic imports, and higher central government revenue spending, theBoB report states. Services indicators are also showing a pickup in activity, as can be seen in case of services PMI, vehicle registrations, diesel consumption, revenue collection of states and e-way bill generations. However, some strains can be seen in performance of 2-wheeler sales, and moderation in consumer durables and FMCG output. However, domestic inflation remains in favour, which hints at softer monetary policy which would spur growth, the report adds. It also highlights that monsoon activity is healthy at 15 per cent above long period average so far (as of July 9) which is expected to give a fillip to the agricultural sector. The Central government finances are on a solid footing with the fiscal deficit ratio eased to 4.5 per cent as of May 2025 from 4.6 per cent as of April 2025, the report observes. The report is also positive on the outlook for the rupee. It stated that the rupee depreciated marginally by 0.2 per cent in June after depreciating by 1.3 per cent in May. Easing geo-political tensions and a weaker dollar, led to range-bound trading in the domestic currency in the later part of the month. 'In July, the rupee is trading with an appreciating bias despite lingering concerns over US tariff policies. We expect this trend to continue. Investors remain hopeful of the successful completion of India-US trade deal before the August 1 deadline, which will lend further support to the rupee, the report said.

Indices tumble nearly 1% on selling in IT, auto stocks

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty declined for the third session in a row on Friday, dropping nearly 1 per cent, dragged by heavy selling in IT, auto and energy stocks amid a muted start of the earnings season. Tariff-related uncertainties and mixed global market trends also added to the pressure, analysts said. The 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 689.81 points or 0.83 per cent to settle at 82,500.47. During the day, it fell 748.03 points or 0.89 per cent to 82,442.25. As many as 2,450 stocks declined while 1,557 advanced and 158 remained unchanged on the BSE. Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 205.40 points or 0.81 per cent to 25,149.85. On the weekly front, the BSE benchmark dropped 932.42 points or 1.11 per cent, and the Nifty tanked 311.15 points or 1.22 per cent. 'While weak European market cues and negative US Dow Futures weighed on sentiment, the disappointing start to earnings season by software major TCS cautioned investors about the sluggish global demand scenario that led to heavy selling in IT, telecom, auto, realty and oil & gas stocks,' Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said. From the Sensex firms, Tata Consultancy Services declined 3.46 per cent after reporting its June quarter earnings. The country's largest IT services company on Thursday reported a 6 per cent growth in June quarter net profit at Rs 12,760 crore, helped by a jump in non-core income even as revenues grew at a tepid pace. The rupee revenue grew 1.3 per cent to Rs 63,437 crore during the quarter. Still, it was down by over 3 per cent on a constant currency basis, as the company faced headwinds in its major markets amid a winding down of the BSNL deal, which helped it in recent quarters. Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Titan, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance, Reliance Industries, Trent, Infosys and HDFC Bank were among the other major laggards from the pack.

Rupee falls 10 paise to close at 85.80 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.76 against the US dollar, and touched an intra-day low of 85.91 during the day. The local unit finally settled for the day at 85.80, down 10 paise from its previous close. Forex traders said global market sentiments were dented as US President Donald Trump imposed 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods. Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 10 paise to close at 85.80 against US dollar on Friday, on weak domestic markets and risk-off sentiments amid trade tariff uncertainty. On Thursday, the rupee pared initial gains and settled for the day higher by 3 paise at 85.70 against the US dollar. 'We expect the rupee to weaken as the trade war continues to dent global risk sentiments. Uncertainty over trade tariffs and higher US dollar index may also pressurise the rupee. However, a weak tone in crude oil prices may support the rupee at lower levels,' Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said. Choudhary further added that USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 85.55 to 86.25. Forex traders said rupee traded in a volatile but narrow range as market participants stayed on the sidelines, waiting for clarity on the US-India interim trade deal. Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said the rise in tariffs from the US on Brazil and Canada has added uncertainty, and markets will remain cautious until constructive trade talks emerge. 'Additionally, the dollar index has shown recovery, rising from 96.50 to 97.75, which has added pressure on emerging market currencies. Rupee is expected to trade in a range of 85.25 to 86.20,' Trivedi said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.13 per cent to 97.77. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.34 per cent to USD 68.87 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, the Sensex dropped 689.81 points or 0.83 per cent to settle at 82,500.47, while the Nifty lost 205.40 points or 0.81 per cent to close at 25,149.85. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 5,104.22 crore on a net basis on Friday, according to exchange data. The latest RBI data released on Friday showed India's forex reserves dropped by USD 3.049 billion to USD 699.736 billion in the week ended July 4. In the previous reporting week, the overall reserves had jumped by USD 4.849 billion to USD 702.784 billion. Meanwhile, India is trying to negotiate and finalise a trade agreement with the US, Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce Rajesh Agrawal said on Thursday. Agrawal is also the chief negotiator of the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement. The aim is to conclude the first phase of this pact by fall (September-October) of this year. Before that, the two countries are looking to finalise an interim trade agreement. An Indian commerce ministry team will soon visit Washington for another round of talks on the proposed trade agreement with the US to iron out differences in sectors, like agriculture and automobiles, a government official said on Thursday. 'We are not differentiating between an interim or the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement. We are negotiating a complete deal. Whatever will be finished, we can package it as an interim deal and for the rest, talks will continue,' the official said. PTI DRR HVA This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
