What is tapping, and can it really improve mental health?
It looks a little goofy.
A self-help method called ' tapping,' which involves using the fingertips to perform acupressure while countering negative emotions with breathing exercises and positive affirmations, has elicited eye-rolls from some mental health professionals.
'I'm safe in my car,' a woman on TikTok says as she practices the technique, using a finger to tap the top of her head, then the side of her eyebrow and the middle of her chin. 'I am my safe space.'
In the video, she explains that driving by herself is a struggle, but tapping has helped lower her anxiety and refocus her thoughts.
Anecdotes like this are easy to find on social media. Over the last 15 years or so, tapping has also popped up on wellness podcasts, TV shows and even the best-seller list.
As a result, the practice, also known as the Emotional Freedom Technique or E.F.T., has attracted a devoted following and become a big business. But many experts remain sceptical.
Where did tapping come from?
Tapping, which falls under the umbrella of energy psychology, originated from a technique called Thought Field Therapy developed by the psychologist Roger Callahan in the 1980s.
He conceived of it while working with a patient who had a severe phobia of water, which Dr Callahan tried treating in various ways, including exposure therapy by the pool.
One day, when the patient complained that just looking at the water gave her a stomachache, Dr Callahan told her to tap firmly under her eye, an area he knew to be associated with the ' stomach meridian ' in traditional Chinese medicine.
According to Dr Callahan, after two minutes of tapping, the patient declared her stomachache had disappeared, along with her fear of the water.
Dr Callahan developed Thought Field Therapy from there, contending that some patients required a series of acupressure points to be touched in a specific order.
Thought Field Therapy was discredited by psychology experts, in part because there isn't a way to measure energy meridians, nor any evidence that proves they exist. But in the 1990s, Gary Craig, a Stanford graduate who later became an ordained minister, rebranded the technique, creating a simplified version called E.F.T.
Proponents suggest that tapping not only relieves stress and anxiety but can also improve symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, addiction and chronic pain, among other maladies.
Practitioners now pay hundreds of dollars to take E.F.T. courses or pursue an official certification.
Does it work?
Even though there are more than 200 studies that examine meridian tapping, this body of work is not as robust as it might sound. Research that claims to highlight the effectiveness of E.F.T. has been riddled by conflicts of interest, small sample sizes, statistical errors and a lack of rigor.
For these reasons, prominent members of the American Psychological Association have said that the push to popularize E.F.T. is based on pseudoscience.
'When you really look at the evidence, it falls apart,' said Cassandra L. Boness, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico and the lead author of a peer-reviewed commentary published in 2024 that raised concerns about the quality of E.F.T. research and questioned the effectiveness of the technique.
But that isn't to say that E.F.T. is useless, experts said. Those who try the technique are instructed to think about or do activities they may find scary or uncomfortable — a form of exposure therapy, which is a powerful way of regulating emotions. Tapping also involves taking a moment to explore one's thoughts, which therapists say can help people understand their behavior.
In essence, tapping is 'a hodgepodge of interventions, some of which are, I'm sure, quite effective,' said David F. Tolin, the director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Conn. But there isn't high-quality research to show that tapping itself is the active ingredient, he added.
What's the harm?
Despite the lackluster evidence, some patients and therapists insist tapping truly helps.
'It doesn't replace existing best practices for treating PTSD, depression, addictions or other serious conditions,' said David Feinstein, who offers classes and certifications in energy medicine, along with his wife. But, in his opinion, it can make those treatments more effective.
Melissa Lester, a psychotherapist in Sandy Springs, Ga., said she found tapping could provide quick benefits, including a calmer, clearer mind. She decided to become certified in the technique because she wanted to give her clients an alternative when methods offered by other therapists, like cognitive behavioral therapy, didn't produce the desired results.
Providing an alternative treatment can indeed be useful to patients, Dr Boness said, but she questioned whether it was ethical to do so in the absence of rigorous scientific evidence.
Her 'biggest fear,' she added, was that vulnerable people would turn to tapping, and then find that it doesn't work.
'It's not actually a psychological treatment,' she said.

Do regular facials actually improve your skin? Here's what dermatologists think
Smoother skin, smaller pores, better hydration — these are just a few of the many benefits facials can offer. And who isn't relaxed after being horizontal for an hour while someone massages your face and tends to your pores? Glowing skin is a major and immediate benefit of getting a facial. But that perk tends to fade after a few days or weeks. And aestheticians will often say that if you want longer-term improvements, like fewer wrinkles, less acne or an even skin tone, you'll need to get facials regularly. Is that true? We asked three dermatologists to weigh in: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Facials come in many forms, said Dr Susan Massick, a dermatologist at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre. Standard ones incorporate some type of deep cleansing, exfoliating, moisturising, massaging and sometimes 'extraction,' or squeezing the gunk out of your pores, she said. They're also often tailored to address specific skin issues like acne, dullness or discoloration, she added. You can get facials at medical spas or salons, and at dermatology offices. When your skin is cleansed, massaged and exfoliated, dead skin cells are removed from the outermost layer of your skin called the epidermis, said Dr Helen He, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. This speeds up the skin's cell turnover rate, which may help brighten your complexion, smooth its texture and shrink your pores, she said. The skin is also typically massaged during the cleansing, moisturising and serum application steps. This can boost circulation and lymphatic drainage, Dr He said, which may minimize puffiness. Beyond skin care, regular facials can help you to unwind and de-stress, said Dr Basia Michalski-McNeely, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. 'It's an hour where you don't have any interruptions, and it's just focused on wellness and taking care of yourself,' she said. WILL REGULAR FACIALS EXTEND THOSE EFFECTS? Generally, the benefits of a single facial are short-lived, lasting a few days to a couple of weeks, Dr Michalski-McNeely said. This is because the epidermis naturally renews about every month, Dr He said. When this happens, dead skin cells build up and can clog your pores, potentially leading to acne and dull skin, she explained. A good skin care routine can address this buildup, but getting facials regularly — every four to eight weeks, for instance — can continuously support healthy skin cell turnover, which may enhance collagen production, leading to more firmness and elasticity in the long-term, Dr He said. Regular facials that are 'tailored to you and your skin' may also offer extended benefits, Dr Massick said. If you're acne prone, you might get one that incorporates extraction; if you have dry skin, you might seek extra moisturizing steps. Still, there are some skin qualities that regular facials may not improve. People with deep wrinkles or skin sagging, for instance, may not get as many skin-smoothing or tightening benefits from facials alone, Dr He said. Sometimes, facials incorporate treatments like chemical peels or LED light therapy, which, when done regularly, can bring more 'lasting results' than traditional facials, such as lightening dark spots or treating acne, Dr. Massick said. WHAT ELSE SHOULD I CONSIDER? Regular facials are safe for most people, Dr Massick said, though she recommended avoiding them if you have an active skin infection (like cold sores or shingles) or facial wounds that are still healing. She also recommended being cautious of facials (or consulting a doctor first) if you have rosacea, psoriasis, eczema or sensitive skin. Facials can also be pricey, costing around $100 or more in some areas. Dr Michalski-McNeely said she doesn't discourage people from getting facials, but she also doesn't think they're necessary for those with a good, consistent skin care routine. A basic one includes cleansing, moisturizing and wearing sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily, Dr. Massick said. Dr Michalski-McNeely also suggested incorporating an over-the-counter retinol or a prescription retinoid — it's a more effective and longer-lasting option for increasing skin cell turnover, improving collagen production and brightening the skin. This, along with a good skin care regimen, is far more effective for anti-aging than facials alone, Dr Massick said. But facials can complement these habits, she added. Cosmetic procedures like Botox, microneedling or laser resurfacing treatments can also offer longer-term benefits than facials, such as boosting collagen, smoothing fine lines and minimizing the appearance of acne scars and dark spots, Dr. Michalski-McNeely added. But these can be expensive, too, and might require a visit to a dermatologist, which Dr Michalski-McNeely recommended. If you get a facial at a medical spa or salon, Dr Massick suggested seeking out a licensed and experienced aesthetician — and asking about the products they use, the procedure and what to expect afterward. Always tell your aesthetician if you're allergic to fragrances or other ingredients that may be in skin care products. Facials can be 'a fun and relaxing treat,' Dr Massick said, just make sure you set 'appropriate expectations' — and don't rely on them as your sole source of skin care.

UAE: Meet the coach who turned Bollywood's biggest name to breath-led yoga practice
In an age where yoga and wellness regimens dominate trends but often lose the depth and discipline rooted in their ancient origins, celebrity yoga instructor Anshuka Parwani is on a mission to restore its authenticity. Best known as the woman behind Bollywood's fittest stars and the founder of Anshuka Yoga, Parwani also hopes to, one day, bridge this crucial gap in Dubai. 'I love everything about wellness, and the wellness community in Dubai is growing rapidly,' says Parwani, who was in the city earlier this year to secure her Golden Visa — a milestone she sees as a reflection of her deepening connection with the region. 'I was nominated by the UAE's ambassador to India, and I'd love to explore opportunities here in the future,' says Parwani. 'I see a real gap when it comes to bringing Anshuka Yoga to Dubai. There's no one offering strategic or targeted yoga the way we do.' But to understand why Parwani has become such a powerful force in yoga, one needs to take stock of where she began. Before she was guiding Deepika Padukone through character embodiment in Gehraiyaan or helping Kareena Kapoor Khan through two pregnancies, Parwani was a commercial pilot. A trajectory suddenly rerouted with a near-fatal motorbike accident, which left her immobile for eight months. 'I had a cranial fracture and 28 fractures in my legs. I couldn't move my legs for six days,' she recalls. 'Yoga came to me post-physiotherapy, as a form of therapy. I started doing breath work and pranayama, and honestly, it worked like magic.' That journey, from being bedridden to rediscovering her body through breath, became the cornerstone of Anshuka Yoga, her signature school of wellness based in Mumbai. However, what sets Parwani apart is her deep-rooted knowledge in traditional yogic practices and how she adapts them for modern routines. 'It's easier to come back from physical trauma, but coming back from mental trauma is harder. It's intangible. That's why yoga, and especially breath work, is so transformative. Your breath changes everything.' Bollywood & beyond Whether she's working with a first-time student or a household name, her approach is the same: meet them where they are. 'Every student is different. We first assess where they are physically, mentally, emotionally. We look at their time, sleep, fitness levels, injuries. Then, we customise the plan. It could be a mix of yoga, pranayama, functional training. It's not one size fits all.' This personalisation is one reason why her clientele reads like the cast list of a film première. From Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, to Alia Bhatt, and Ananya Pandey, Anshuka has guided them all — not just through fitness, but through pregnancy, emotional resets, role preparation, and postnatal recovery. 'It started with Kareena, then Sonam, Deepika, Alia… I've seen each of them through their journeys, even into motherhood. But the beautiful part is, they were already students,' says Parwani. 'With Kareena, I was there through both her pregnancies. We worked closely during the prenatal and postnatal phases. People assume pregnancy yoga is gentle — it's not. Our modified Surya Namaskars can be more challenging than the traditional ones. You're carrying extra weight, your centre of gravity shifts, and it becomes crucial to protect your posture, back, and core,' she explains. 'I always say: your doctor and your yoga teacher should be the first to know when you're pregnant. I've often been among the first five people told. That level of trust, it's everything.' Her collaboration with Padukone on the film Gehraiyaan also became a defining moment for Parwani. '[Deepika] was playing a yoga teacher, so I wasn't just training her physically. I was the director of yoga and creative director for the character. We started working online during Covid, and it was the first time I pivoted to virtual teaching. The connection we built was deep, even remotely. Her character needed to embody the philosophy, so we worked on breath, posture, even energy.' Power of your breath But breath is the starting point for all transformation, she insists. 'I work with actors and athletes, and everything starts with breath. Whether you're anxious or happy, your breath changes. I once had someone with anxiety and low oxygen levels, and with breathwork, their levels returned to normal. That's how powerful it is,' she adds. 'Even now, as I speak to you, if I regulate my breath, I'm regulating my whole system. My parasympathetic nervous system is engaged, which is the rest and relax mode. It keeps my cortisol in check, and my hormones are regulated,' says Parwani. And the best part? The benefits are immediate. 'People come back and say, 'Add more breath-work'. Some ask for home practices. That's when I know it's working.' The impact of breath-work also goes beyond stress management. 'We've had women struggling to conceive who started practising with us. Touchwood, every one of them has had a healthy child. Husbands come up to thank us. Yoga resets your parasympathetic nervous system. It regulates cortisol, cholesterol, even hormonal health.' It's this tailored, holistic approach that keeps even the busiest celebrities returning. 'They have access to every fitness regime in the world. But they come back because yoga isn't just a workout. It flows into everything… from HIIT, gym, Pilates. Yoga is mind, body, soul.' For instance, with actors like Ananya Panday, the transformation has been both physical and emotional, says Parwani. 'She didn't love the practice at first, but she was open. We started with movement and fitness, and over time it became about emotional and mental wellbeing. Now she meditates daily, practises pranayama. It's a holistic approach.' Despite being rooted in ancient wisdom, Parwani is not rigid about the evolution of yoga in western society. 'Traditionally, women had children younger. Now, people are having babies after 40. So the practice must evolve. I'm not a traditionalist. We use creative methods to engage people, whether it's music, kriyas, or blending techniques, but we never dilute the essence.' But beneath all the custom plans, movement guidances and sold-out workshops, Parwani's underlying message remains the same: Yoga meets you where you are. 'Some days the practice is powerful, dynamic. Some days it's stillness. That's the beauty of it,' she says. 'Yoga is not a fad. It's thousands of years old. What works is consistency, patience and a deep connection with your body. Not quick fixes.'
