AIMIM prepares for Jubilee Hills bypoll: Eyes seat after backing BRS in 2023; Muslim, SC vote split may impact Congress, BRS prospects
HYDERABAD: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is preparing the ground to contest the forthcoming by-election to the Jubilee Hills assembly constituency in the city.

The bypoll to the seat was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA, Maganti Gopinath of the BRS.
The bypoll is crucial for all the major political parties - Congress, BRS, BJP and AIMIM - as its result is expected to influence the elections to 150 wards of the GHMC, which are likely to be held by year-end or early next year.
The AIMIM had contested this seat in the 2014 and 2023 assembly elections, finishing second and fourth, respectively. The constituency has a sizable population of Muslim and SC voters. AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP
has directed the party leaders to prepare for the bypoll.
There is speculation that both BRS and Congress may consider holding talks with the AIMIM, as a split in the Muslim vote bank could mar the chances of both parties. The BRS has not lost this seat since the formation of Telangana state.
Political observers said the AIMIM contesting the 2023 assembly polls boosted the victory prospects of the then-ruling BRS. In the polls, MIM candidate Mohammed Rashed Farazuddin secured nearly 8,000 votes, finishing fourth.
In the 2014 election, AIMIM's Naveen Yadav polled nearly 42,000 votes and finished second. The party did not contest the seat in 2018. The talk in political circles is that the AIMIM entering the electoral battle from Jubilee Hills in the 2023 poll was allegedly to help the BRS. It was more of a friendly sort of contest, said the political analysts.
However, the AIMIM, which had openly supported the BRS in the 2023 assembly elections, appears to have changed its strategy after the Congress came to power in the state in Dec 2023.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi appealed to the Muslims to support some of the Congress candidates.
However, a senior leader said the party is extending issue-based support to Congress govt. "Our main objective is the development of Muslims, SCs, STs, BCs, EWS, and other marginalised communities. Any move to support the govt will be taken keeping in view the welfare of these sections and the development of the Old City. We have started working in Jubilee Hills. As far as contesting elections or finalising the candidate for the bypoll is concerned, the party will decide at an appropriate time," said a senior leader of the AIMIM.

SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi moves HC, seeks quashing of FIR over his controversial remarks on Aurangzeb
Mumbai, June 30 (UNI) Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi today filed a petition at the Bombay High Court, seeking direction to quash the FIR (first information report) registered against him for his alleged remarks supporting Mughal emperor Aurangzeb made during the Maharashtra Assembly's Budget session on March three, which had created a major controversy. In his petition Azmi had denied the charges levelled against him. Police had earlier registered an offence against him, and he was granted an anticipatory bail in the matter. Against the FIR, Azmi moved the high court. Upon hearing his plea, a division bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Rajesh Patil issued a notice and directed the state and other respondents to file a reply within four weeks' time. It may be recalled that during the assembly session while participating in a debate on the state Budget, Azmi had praised Aurangzeb and said that 'India was called the 'golden bird' and its GDP during Aurangzeb's era was 24 percent'. He referred to historian Ram Puniyani's observations while speaking to media persons. 'The wrong history has been painted. Aurangzeb constructed many temples. I don't believe he was a cruel ruler. Ram Puniyani said that Aurangzeb's battle was about power and wealth, religion had nothing to do with it. Thirty-four percent people who worked with him were Hindu. He destroyed both masjids (mosque) and temples.' The remarks that led to these legal troubles were made by Azmi when he was speaking to the media. Azmi also said that Aurangzeb ruled honestly and did not misuse public money, stating that the emperor did not take even a single rupee from the administration. He mentioned that India's territory under Aurangzeb stretched all the way to Burma and Afghanistan. Continuing his statement, Azmi added that Aurangzeb's army also had Hindu commanders, and the battles fought under his reign were not between Hindus and Muslims. He claimed the historical events were 'misinterpreted' over the years. These comments, however, led to a political storm and drew heavy criticism, especially from Hindu groups and political leaders, who accused Azmi of hurting Hindu religious sentiments. In response, Azmi was suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly. UNI AAA SS

'Behave Or We'll…': Trump's BIG Threat To Mamdani Amid Fierce New York Battle | Watch US President Donald Trump is threatening to cut federal funding to New York City if Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral hopeful, is elected and doesn't "behave." In a recent interview, Trump reiterated his calls of Mamdani being a "communist" and stated, "Whoever's mayor of New York is going to have to behave themselves or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially." Mamdani, who is endorsed by high-profile Democrats like AOC, has responded to Trump's remarks, denying he is a communist and accusing Trump of distraction. Mamdani's progressive, anti-Israel, and pro-immigration stances have rattled Republicans, with some even calling for his deportation. Mamdani, poised to become NYC's first Muslim and South Asian mayor, recently spoke out about receiving death threats due to his race and religion. 5.7K views | 4 hours ago

Minister Ponnam accuses BJP of discriminating against BCs
Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has slammed the BJP, accusing the party of continuing its discriminatory approach towards Backward Classes (BCs) by not allowing a BC leader from filing the nomination for the post of the party State unit president. He alleged that the BJP had once again exposed its 'anti-BC stance' by sidelining BC leaders in internal party affairs. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Prabhakar questioned the BJP leadership's commitment to social justice, pointing out that the party, despite having three BC MPs and several senior BC leaders, had failed to appoint a BC as its State president. The Minister said that in the past, the BJP had made promises to make a BC leader the Chief Minister, but it had failed to honour those commitments. 'They did not even consider appointing a BC as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly,' he said. He contrasted this with the Congress's measures, stating that social justice is achievable only through the Congress. He said the party had appointed a BC leader as the PCC president. Highlighting the Congress-led initiatives in Telangana, Mr. Prabhakar said the government was moving forward with a caste census and had brought in legislation to ensure 42% reservation for BCs in political, educational, and employment sectors. Referring to the leadership change in the State BJP ahead of the last Assembly elections, he said the party had removed BC leader Bandi Sanjay and replaced him with G. Kishan Reddy, further reflecting its disregard for backward classes.
