Girls aged 11, 13, 14 detained in San Francisco in series of aggravated assaults
The San Francisco Police Department said in a press release Monday that the department is investigating at least five apparent unprovoked attacks involving a group of juveniles with similar suspect descriptions that began earlier this month.
The department said multiple units, including plainclothes, investigations, special operations, and patrol, were working to identify the suspects.
On Saturday at about 2:54 p.m., officers responded to 4th Street between Mission and Howard Streets in the city's South of Market area on a report of an assault. According to police, two victims reported they were assaulted by several juvenile females who then fled after bystanders stepped in to stop the attack. The victims were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Investigators who were aware of the previous incidents were immediately able to access surveillance video of the attack and disseminate images of the suspects to officers on patrol. Plainclothes officers patrolling on the city's west side found a group of girls matching the images of the assault suspects at the Stonestown Galleria, police said.
The girls were detained, and through the course of the investigation, officers developed probable cause to arrest two girls, ages 13 and 14. for assault likely to produce great bodily injury, police said. An 11-year-old girl was also detained and admonished, and after consulting with juvenile probation authorities, the officers were advised to release the suspects to their parents at the scene.
"Violent attacks like these will never be tolerated, and the SFPD will use all resources available to ensure our city is safe," said Interim Police Chief Paul Yep said in a prepared statement. "I am extremely disappointed in the actions of these individuals, and they will be held accountable."
Police said the investigations remain open and active, and anyone with information was asked to contact the SFPD at (415) 575-4444 or send a text to TIP411 and begin the message with "SFPD."

An erratic and paranoid man took out an imitation firearm and pointed it at the sky at a busy railway station before he was heard saying: "You better get the police before I harm someone." When he was arrested by police at his home, a further imitation weapon was discovered. Benjamin Stockham, 45, approached two security guards on the concourse of Cardiff Central railway station on July 3 last year in a distressed state. He told the two men he "needed protection" and asked them to phone the police. A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard the guards believed the defendant was intoxicated as a result of his "erratic and paranoid" manner. Prosecutor Abigail Jackson said Stockham was taken to a private room and the police were called, but when he was put on the phone the defendant became aggressive and left the room. He was then seen walking back onto the station concourse on CCTV, and was heard saying: "If they hurt my girlfriend I'm going to kill them." At that stage, Stockham took out the firearm which had the appearance of a "semi-automatic pistol" from the waistband of his trousers. The defendant was then seen to cock the gun and point it to the sky. A homeless person nearby heard Stockham say: "You better get the police before I harm someone, I have a gun." He was then seen to walk in the direction of the Principality Stadium but when the police arrived at the scene they were unable to locate him. Stockham, of West Lee, Riverside, Cardiff, was arrested at his home in the early hours of the morning. A search of the house resulted in the discovery of two imitation firearms, which were both found to be BB guns, but it could not be determined which weapon had been taken to the station. The defendant later pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing imitation firearms with intent to cause fear of violence. The court heard he has 10 previous convictions, for offences including common assault and threatening to destroy or damage property. In mitigation, Nick Gedge said his client had been trying to seek help for problems surrounding drugs and alcohol, and has attempted to rebuild his life. Sentencing, Judge Paul Hobson described the offences as "disturbing behaviour". Stockham was sentenced to eight months imprisonment suspended for 18 months. He was also made subject to a rehabilitation activity requirement for 15 days and ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work. Shocking video shows the moment a man slapped a woman across the face for refusing to get up from her seat, prompting bystanders to rush him. The disgusting scene, which took place at Bogota's El Dorado International Airport on Sunday and was widely shared on social media, began when Hector Santacruz approached Claudia Segura and demanded she give up her seat, the Daily Mail reported. Tesla partly liable in Florida Autopilot trial, jury awards $200M punitive damages
A jury in federal court in Miami has found Tesla partly to blame for a fatal 2019 crash that involved the use of the company's Autopilot driver assistance system. The jury awarded the plaintiffs $200 million in punitive damages, along with 'compensatory damages for pain and suffering,' according to NBC News. Neither the driver of the car nor the Autopilot system braked in time to avoid going through an intersection, where the car struck an SUV and killed a pedestrian. The jury assigned the driver two-thirds of the blame, and attributed one-third to Tesla. (The driver was sued separately.)
