Uttarakhand to train 1 lakh in spoken Sanskrit for everyday use
Announcing these plans at the 10th general committee meeting of the Uttarakhand Sanskrit Academy on Thursday, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted the state's rich cultural and spiritual heritage rooted in Sanskrit, yoga and Ayurveda. "We aim to bring Sanskrit back into everyday life — not just as the language of scriptures, but as a spoken form of communication," Dhami said. He also proposed annual awards and honorariums for individuals who make significant contributions to Sanskrit education and literature.
To further integrate the language into public life, it was proposed that all govt office name plates should also include Sanskrit and schools be asked to promote the language through debates, essay competitions and shloka recitations. "The state is also developing 13 Sanskrit villages — one in each district — with plans of expanding to every block in the future," said education minister Dhan Singh Rawat, who was present at the meeting.
Rawat also outlined additional measures, including scholarships and incentives for students and priests, creation of Vedic study centres and a short film competition focused on contemporary Sanskrit themes. "The state will collaborate with national and international institutions to advance Sanskrit research and education, aligning with the National Education Policy 2020. District-level nodal officers will be appointed to oversee and support these initiatives," he added.

Highlighting the employment potential of the language, Deepak Kumar, secretary of the Sanskrit department said, "Sanskrit offers a wide range of opportunities and we are working to shape it into a viable career path. By training students in the 16 traditional Hindu sanskars, we aim to prepare them for roles such as priests and ritual specialists."
He added, "The initiative goes beyond preserving a classical language — it's about creating sustainable careers grounded in India's rich cultural and spiritual heritage."

Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Monday rejected speculations about his likely association with the ruling DMK and further maintained his objective was to form Amma's government in the 2026 Assembly poll. He clarified that his recent comments on the Centre not releasing funds for Tamil Nadu under the Samagra Shiksha programme were not new, and he had flagged this as early as in August 2024. In a statement, Mr. Panneerselvam termed as 'indecent' the attempts by some to politicise his visit to Mr. Stalin's residence. 'The meeting was not related to politics,' he contended.'It is in the culture of the Tamils to visit and enquire about the well-being of someone, who has been under treatment in a hospital and has returned home, and to extend condolences if there is a loss in the family,' he said in a statement. Recalling his visit to the Chief Minister's residence, Mr. Panneerselvam explained that he visited only to enquire about the health of Mr. Stalin and express condolences over the passing of the latter's brother M.K. Muthu. He also rejected contentions and speculations which termed him as 'DMK's Team B', and he was about to forge an alliance with the DMK and maintained there was 'not even an iota of truth in it'. He recalled in June that he had condemned the Hindu Munnani over remarks made against late leaders Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai. 'I have also condemned former BJP leaders who criticised Amma [former CM Jayalalithaa]. I have also recorded my support for the two-language policy,' he asserted. Mr. Panneerselvam added: 'I also directed to vote against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. Irrespective of wherever I am, I will walk on the path laid down by Amma for the rights and welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.'

Cabinet nod to amend panchayat act to simplify licence procedures
Panaji: The state cabinet on Monday decided to amend the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, to empower the panchayats to seal any premises if any business is carried out within its jurisdiction without a valid licence from the panchayat. The amendment seeks to simplify the process of issuing repair permission to single dwelling units by giving power to the panchayat secretary to issue repair permission without placing it before a panchayat meeting. The bill seeks to amend the act to reduce the time for the disposal of applications for construction licences from 30 days to 15 days, as envisaged in the reforms proposed in the context of the Business Reforms Action Plan (BRAP), 2024. It will reduce the time for the disposal of applications for occupancy certificates from 45 days to 15 days and for disposal of applications for trade licences from 15 days to 7 days. The amendment seeks to insert a new section in the principal act, as there is no provision to seal premises if any business is carried out without a valid licence from the panchayat. ' 'No such premises shall be sealed till the expiry of the period given to rectify any defect thereof. An appeal against the panchayat order shall lie before the director, and the director's decision in the matter shall be final, provided that the director shall not grant any interim relief without hearing the panchayat,' the bill said.

Govt officials in Rewa div to pedal to work every Tuesday
Bhopal: Govt officials in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa division have been asked — though it is voluntary — to pedal their way to work every Tuesday as part of a new initiative promoting energy conservation, clean air, and healthy living. Starting this week, 'Tuesday-Bicycle Day' should be observed across all district headquarters of the division, with officers and staff encouraged to use bicycles instead of personal fuel-powered vehicles. This directive was issued by Rewa division commissioner Babu Singh Jamod and applies to officials in Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Maihar, Beohari and Anuppur. "It will be observed from Aug 5 onwards. However, we are not forcing it; it is voluntary, but we will try and encourage that maximum people follow it. It has dual benefits, one of being socially responsible and the other is personal health benefits. Cycles have disappeared from homes, and people have lost that habit. Once the cycles are there, apart from one day a week for office, people could also develop the habit of using them, thus improving their health," Jamod told TOI.
