Chinese tourists can now pay via DuitNow QR at 2.5 million Malaysian shops using Alipay, Weixin Pay
PayNet has teamed up with Alipay+ and Weixin Pay (also known as WeChat Pay) to drive mainland Chinese and regional tourist spending across the country. With the current cross-border integration, tourists can scan DuitNow QR codes using their Alipay and Weixin Pay eWallets at over 2.5 million merchants in Malaysia.
In conjunction with the upcoming summer travel season, both Alipay+ and Weixin Pay are rolling out targeted campaigns to promote Malaysia as a top destination, with the aim to boost cross-border spending and make travel more seamless and rewarding for visitors.
With DuitNow QR's cross-border payment integration with Alipay+ and Weixin Pay, the interoperability not only makes travel hassle-free but it also helps to increase visibility for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to tap into tourist spending.
Alipay+ itself currently enables 15 international payment apps in Malaysia which include Alipay for mainland Chinese tourists and other Asian-based eWallets. During the December 2024 travel season, Alipay+ via DuitNow QR has driven six-fold revenue increase for Malaysian merchants year-on-year.
Cross-border campaigns via Alipay+ and Weixin Pay to promote Malaysia as a top cashless destination

The multi-partner initiative aims to increase sales by 20% for participating merchants during the summer campaign period. The campaign is set to play a vital role in reaching the target of 6 million Chinese tourist arrivals this year.
As tourist arrivals to Malaysia continue to grow, the partnership between PayNet, Alipay+ and Weixin Pay aims to showcase the power of digital payments to fuel economic growth.

The target for 2025 is to increase DuitNow QR transactions through Alipay+ and Weixin Pay by more than 130% year-on-year.

PM hits back at claims of neglect, says RM1.84b in projects prove federal commitment to Terengganu
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked the people of the state not to be influenced by baseless claims that the federal government is not doing any development for their welfare. He said in fact, a total of 445 programmes and projects with an allocation of RM1.836 billion have been approved in Terengganu under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) Development Programmes/Projects of the 12th Malaysia Plan (MP12). He said this was an increase of RM239 million compared to last year, thus refuting claims by some quarters that no development was being done for the state. '..this is I announcing projects that are underway or have started to proceed. Sometimes it is slow (because we have to take into account) the issue of land acquisition, impact studies and suitability, but the approved (project) is RM1.836 billion. 'So if there are people giving talks in any village, claiming no projects, please explain the approved allocation of RM1.836 billion,' he said when speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the Terengganu Madani Rakyat (PMR) 2025 Programme at the Pasar Kedai Payang compound, here today. The Finance Minister said that among the important development projects currently underway for the people of Terengganu is the initiative to expand broadband internet coverage in districts such as Hulu Terengganu and Besut which will benefit more than 15,000 households. In addition, RM300 million has been allocated to upgrade the existing water distribution system which will increase piped water supply to 98 per cent by the end of this year. 'Then, RM2.243 billion has been allocated specifically for flood mitigation projects and estuary conservation and coastal erosion in Terengganu. 'I also discussed with the Menteri Besar that we (the federal and state governments) must find new technologies to prevent this erosion from continuing to occur so that preventive measures can be expedited,' he said. He said that all these are evidence of the commitment that the federal government also prioritises the people in this state regardless of the excessive accusations that do not benefit and result in continued tension between the state and federal governments. 'In this country, if there is cooperation and focus on important matters for the country, we will be safe but if we are still hanging around with negative campaigns, it will not help. For example, the accusation that we do not want to help the Malays or that the Islamic economy is currently challenged. '...but this is a programme, why did I choose Terengganu (as one of the locations for the event). Terengganu has more than 90 per cent Malays, but I didn't choose it because it's Malay alone, but because the state has recorded progress and excellence in education and other fields. 'So I hope we can listen but evaluate it well and don't make it an issue that doesn't benefit us,' he said. During the event, Anwar also witnessed the handover of a replica cheque for the allocation for road and slope maintenance on Terengganu's federal roads totalling RM158.6 million from the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Works. Chery and BYD face government audit over US$53m in disqualified EV subsidies
SHANGHAI, July 12 — Chinese automaker Chery on Saturday denied assertions that it had improperly claimed government subsidies for environmentally friendly vehicles. An audit by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology disqualified declarations by Chery and BYD for a combined US$53 million in government subsidies for thousands of vehicles sold in the five years to 2020, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of such improper claims. Chery denied its declarations were improper. It said in a statement it had previously consulted the authorities about the challenges of missing receipts because the cars were sold more than five years ago and that the government had advised the company to declare the cars for the ministry to determine if they should be qualified. 'Our company has truthfully reported to the authorities we did not collect certificates for end sales; there's no fraudulent act,' Chery said in the statement. The government's assertions do not include allegations of fraud. EV maker BYD did not respond to requests for comment. The audit, initiated earlier this year to verify subsidy applications over the five-year period, disqualified 21,725 vehicles for subsidies as it found discrepancies such as failure to submit required supporting documents or to meet the mandated mileage thresholds, according to the documents published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June. Chery had 7,663 vehicles disqualified — 19 for mileage thresholds and 7,643 for not providing certificates. The audit documents did not lay out any penalties or mention reimbursement. The government has previously said automakers will have to repay subsidies for vehicles found not to have met mileage requirements. Chery said the audit covered declarations for subsidies that were not prepaid and thus automakers did not need to repay. — Reuters
