President Lee urges citizens to dine out to boost South Korea's economy
On Friday, Lee had dinner at a restaurant in central Seoul with his staff in a way to promote dining out to help small-sized brick-and-mortar restaurants and small merchants, overcome a slump amid sluggish domestic demand.
'I personally hope citizens would visit nearby restaurants to promote and cheer on their businesses ... which will in turn revive the local economy and become an impetus for a bright future of South Korea,' Lee said in a social media post.Lee's remarks came as the country will begin distributing cash handouts to all citizens on July 21 as part of a government initiative aimed at stimulating domestic consumption.All South Korean citizens residing in the country will receive a one-time payment of 150,000 won, depending on their income levels.Lee earlier instructed senior aides to draw up measures to maximise the effects of cash handouts, which is a part of an extra budget as a stimulus package to boost private consumption. — Bernama-Yonhap

PETALING JAYA : Appointing acting ministers to fill vacant Cabinet posts is crucial to ensure continuity, especially with the upcoming parliamentary meeting set to begin on July 21, said plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani. Johari, who has been tasked with temporarily overseeing the natural resources and environmental sustainability ministry, said appointing acting ministers is also necessary to address pressing issues under the ministries' purview. 'When there's a vacancy, the prime minister appoints someone to take on the role temporarily,' he told reporters after officiating the Kuantan Umno division delegates meeting today. 'With Parliament about to sit, there will be questions that require answers. For example, the economy ministry needs to finalise the 13th Malaysia Plan, so someone has to be appointed to get the job done quickly. 'That's why an acting role is important to resolve critical matters within the next month or two.' Yesterday, chief secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the Cabinet had agreed that Johari will carry out the roles and functions of the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister effective immediately. This comes after PKR's Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stepped down as the minister in May. Last month, the Cabinet agreed for finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan to take on the duties and functions of the economy minister following Rafizi Ramli's resignation. Amir was also tasked with overhauling the 13MP, which will be tabled in Parliament on July 31. Rafizi and Nik Nazmi quit their Cabinet positions after failing to defend their posts of deputy president and vice-president, respectively, at PKR's party elections in May.

Land for houses of worship can be revoked if not built on time, says S'gor exco

(Bernama pic) SHAH ALAM : The Selangor government can withdraw approval for land earmarked for non-Muslim houses of worship if they are not developed within the specified period, the Selangor assembly was told today. State local government and tourism committee chairman Ng Suee Lim said the land for which approval was withdrawn would be given to those in need instead. He said the special committee on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism had approved 400 lots of land for the building of non-Muslim houses of worship since 2008. If no house of worship is built within a certain period, the state government will take back the land, he said in response to a supplementary question from Lwi Kian Keong (PH-Sungai Pelek).

Elbridge Colby, the US under-secretary of defence for policy, has been pushing the matter during recent talks with defence officials of both countries, the report said, citing people familiar with the discussions. According to the newspaper, the reported request caught both Tokyo and Canberra off guard, as the US itself does not offer a blank cheque guarantee to defend Taiwan. Reuters could not verify the report. The US department of defence did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The US is Taiwan's most important arms supplier, despite a lack of formal diplomatic ties. Taiwan has faced increased military pressure from China, including several rounds of war games, as Beijing seeks to assert its sovereignty claims over the island. Taiwan rejects China's assertion of sovereignty. Colby was deputy assistant secretary of defence for strategy and force development during President Donald Trump's first term.
