I'm excited about paying a tribute to Simran ma'am: Priya Prakash Varrier

Time of India19-05-2025

'Ajith sir is a beautiful human inside and out. To have the privilege to get to know him, spend time, and have conversations with him was the best takeaway (from GBU ) for me," says Priya Prakash Varrier.
Right now, I'm looking forward to being more active in Tamil,' says
Priya Prakash Varrier
, who made her Tamil debut earlier this year with Dhanush's Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam ( NEEK ). In a chat with us, the actress, who states that she feels 'blessed and grateful' for the love coming her way for
Good Bad Ugly
( GBU ), talks to us about her career and what lays ahead. Excerpts from the interview:
'I DIDN'T KNOW I WOULD BE PERFORMING THOTTU THOTTU PESUM'
Speaking about GBU , Priya says, ' GBU is my second film in Tamil, and the audience has turned it into a huge celebration. The acceptance I got for it has made me happy and satisfied as an artiste. I didn't exactly know what I was going to do in the film or that I would be performing the song Thottu Thottu Pesum ( Ethirum Puthirum ). 'I'm excited about paying a tribute to a legendary actress like
Simran
ma'am.'
'Ajith sir and I spoke about family, travelling, and cars'
Sharing her working experience with GBU co-stars Ajith and Arjun Das, she states, 'Ajith sir is a beautiful human inside and out. To have the privilege to get to know him, spend time, and have conversations with him was the best takeaway (from GBU ) for me. On the set, we spoke about family, travelling, and cars. It was also great to work with Arjun Das. He is sweet and passionate. He is very into his work and was a very supportive co-star.'
'MY CHARACTERS IN NEEK AND GBU WERE POLAR OPPOSITES'
Priya says NEEK was a good platform for her entry into the Tamil industry. 'I was listening to a lot of scripts in Tamil, but was waiting to start out with the right project that challenged and excited me. I felt NEEK would be a great kickstart for my career here. My characters in NEEK and GBU are polar opposites. Preethi ( NEEK ) is like a girlnext-door, while Nithya ( GBU ) is a bit on the wilder side.'
'ADHIK IS CHILL; DHANUSH SIR IS SERIOUS'
The actress reveals how different Dhanush and Adhik Ravichandrann (director of GBU ) are when it comes to direction. 'Adhik is more chill; he enjoys the process and has fun on set. With him, you have no clue what you are doing. He surprises you and makes you surprise yourself. Dhanush sir is technically sound, disciplined, and professional. He is serious when it comes to what he needs. He told me that Preethi isn't coy and is rather straightforward. That helped me define my character in NEEK .'
'LANGUAGE BARRIER HASN'T BEEN MUCH OF AN ISSUE FOR ME'
Priya considers herself fortunate to have already worked in five languages in a short span of time. 'For me, there hasn't been much of a language barrier. I was not familiar with Kannada and Telugu, but I can understand both languages now. I can also talk a little bit of Telugu. But learning Tamil and Hindi have pretty much been easy. Right now, I'm looking forward to being more active in Tamil.'
'I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE WINK GOING VIRAL; IT CHANGED MY LIFE'
Having rose to fame as the 'wink girl' (her winking in the Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love (2019) went viral), Priya shares, 'I'm grateful for it (the wink going viral) because it changed my life. Only when I do something bigger than that will people resonate with it. Right now, more people are talking about GBU in reference to me. So, I hope to keep growing as a performer and break my track record with each project.'
'TROLLING AND HATRED DID NOT TAKE A TOLL ON ME'
Shortly after she became a sensation, Priya was also subjected to trolling. 'When I was shown a lot of love, I was very neutral to it. That's why the trolling and hatred did not take a toll on me. I was pretty neutral to it. It's important to keep yourself grounded and focused on what you want to do in life. It's very easy to get carried away in all this,' she opines.

Kannappa Box Office Collection Day 1: Vishnu Manchu's Film Roars With Rs 9 Crore

Last Updated: Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa, featuring cameos by Akshay Kumar and Prabhas, earned Rs 9 crore nett across India on its opening day. Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa may not have opened to record-breaking numbers, but it sure made enough noise on day one. Seems like the cameos by Akshay Kumar and Prabhas worked in its favour. The Telugu mythological action drama hit theatres on Friday and, as per early estimates by earned Rs 9 crore nett across India. According to the report, Kannappa saw varied occupancy rates across regions on Friday—16.45 per cent in Tamil, 55.89 per cent in Telugu, 14.56 per cent in Hindi, 13.81 per cent in Kannada, and 7.20 per cent in Malayalam. While the film collected Rs 9 crore on its opening day, it still outperformed Kajol's Maa, which earned Rs 4.50 crore. In fact, Kannappa made nearly double of what Maa did, as per data from Maa also hit theatres on Friday, marking Kajol's much-awaited return to the big screen after a three-year break. Directed by Vishal Furia, the mythological horror thriller is produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande, with Kumar Mangat Pathak serving as co-producer. A review by News18 of Kannappa read, 'The whole sequence and the visual effects are superbly done, an example of how far our cinema has evolved technologically. Back in the day, the same scene would've involved golden cardboard arrows moving at less than 24 frames per second. One arrow would spew fire, the opponent's would quench it with water. If one turned into a snake, the other would become its predator, an eagle. Mukesh Kumar Singh's Kannappa isn't weighed down by such age-old silliness. Here, the fight sequences and visuals look rich. However, if one were to read out the dialogues of Kannappa and any devotional film from the past one after the other, it would be hard to discern which is from 2025 and which is not." Kannappa is a 2025 Indian Telugu-language mythological devotional film directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh. The story, written by Vishnu Manchu—who also plays the titular role—is inspired by the legend of Kannappa, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva in Hindu mythology. The film is produced by veteran actor Mohan Babu and features a star-studded ensemble cast including Preity Mukhundhan, Kajal Aggarwal, Mohan Babu, R. Sarathkumar, Arpit Ranka, Brahmanandam, Brahmaji, Siva Balaji, Kaushal Manda, Rahul Madhav, Devaraj, Mukesh Rishi, Raghu Babu, and Madhoo in key supporting roles. First Published:

Kannappa Opens Big — For a Vishnu Manchu film, 11cr first day box office in India

Kannappa opened well at the Telugu box office, grossing Rs. 11 crore approx on its first day in India. The Vishnu Manchu starrer, featuring a galore of cameos from all across the country, including big names like Prabhas, Akshay Kumar and Mohanlal, drew most of its revenue from the Telugu version. The Hindi dubbed version had minimal collections while Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam were pretty much washouts. The film grossed Rs. 8.50 crore approx on Friday in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The opening is career best for Vishnu, who doesn't really have a box office track record of any value to his name, with his last hit being more than a decade ago and his recent films all being pretty much non-starters. The opening can be attributed to the subject matter, while the presence of Prabhas also probably helped the going to some degree in the Telugu states. The film carries huge costs, and the production is carrying the risk with theatrical rights not sold to any third-party distributors, which is rare for a Telugu film. The film could have done with a bigger opening, but then there weren't any expectations for that, and these numbers are better than expectations. It doesn't seem like the Hindi version will break out, which makes it tough for it, relying only on the Telugu version, which tends to fade quickly. The film will aim to sustain from this start, with the immediate task being not to drop big today. The first day box office collections of Kannappa are as follows:
