How was listeria found in turkey bacon?
According to the FSIS, the issue was discovered after the company's testing indicated the product may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
Consuming food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that mainly affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns, the FSIS said, adding that people of these risk groups are less commonly impacted.
What are the symptoms of listeriosis?
Per the FSIS, listeriosis symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
The infection, which is invasive and can spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract, can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery and life-threatening infection of pregnant women's newborns, the FSIS said. Serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and people with weakened immune systems are also possible.
Those in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food are advised to seek medical care and tell their health care provider about eating the contaminated food, according to the public health agency.
Listeriosis is commonly treated with antibiotics.
What should people do if they have the recalled turkey bacon?
Anyone who has purchased the recalled Kraft Heinz turkey bacon products is urged not to consume them, the FSIS said. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase immediately, the agency added.
"FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers," the agency said.

‘Do not use, sell, serve': Recall issued for cheese sold in Ontario over Listeria concerns
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall notice for a variety of cheese sold in Ontario due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall impacts the Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese manufactured by Natural Pastures Cheese Company. 'Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product,' the CFIA states in an alert . The recall impacts 150-gram packages from batch number 854 263 with a best-before date of Oct. 2, 2025. The product was distributed in Ontario, the CFIA notice states. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can naturally exist in soil, plants, decaying vegetables, sewage and untreated water. Listeria can also get into sources of water when feces from infected animals enter the water supply. Fruits and vegetables can become contaminated a few ways — if contaminated water is sprayed on crops, or from listeria in soil or manure-based fertilizers. Symptoms of listeriosis — the illness caused by the bacteria — can start as early as three days after eating contaminated food, and includes those similar to food poisoning, such as fever, nausea, cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Symptoms can also include headache, constipation and muscle aches. If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your health-care provider. You can report a food concern or complaint to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency online. Consumers can report any health or safety incidents related to the use of products by filling out a consumer product incident report form . Nearly 368,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer turkey bacon products are being recalled over possible contamination with listeria bacteria that can cause food poisoning, federal health officials said Wednesday. No illnesses have been confirmed to date, U.S. agriculture department officials said. Kraft Heinz Food Company of Newberry, South Carolina, announced the recall of the fully cooked turkey bacon that was produced from April 24 to June 11. The problem was discovered when the company's laboratory testing indicated potential listeria contamination. The recall includes the following products, which were shipped to U.S. stores nationwide, as well as the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong: — 12-ounce packages of Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Original with the UPC code 071871548601 printed on the package under the bar code. They include use-by dates from July 18 to Sept. 4 and lot codes RS19, RS40 and RS42. Consumers shouldn't eat the products, which may be in their refrigerators or freezers. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Listeria infections can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults, people with weakened immune systems and those who are pregnant or their newborns. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. About 1,600 people get sick each year from listeria infections and about 260 die, the CDC said. Federal officials in December said they were revamping protocols to prevent listeria infections after several high-profile outbreaks, including one linked to Boar's Head deli meats that led to 10 deaths and more than 60 illnesses last year. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
