James Cook sits out Bills' practice Sunday, calls it "business"
On Sunday, he rested.
Cook did not participate in practice for the first time during camp, watching from the side in street clothes and spending time on an exercise bicycle.
'Oh, nothing,' Cook said, via Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. 'Business.'
Cook also answered 'business' when asked whether he was holding in and about whether he planned to practice Monday. The Bills had no comment on Cook's non-participation, per Getzenberg, and Cook was not included in coach Sean McDermott's list of injured players sitting out Sunday's session.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the sides have engaged in talks and are 'not . . . that far apart.'
Cook wants to be paid like one of the top running backs in the league after making $4.257 million for his first three seasons. He is due to make $5.271 million in base salary this season in the final year of his rookie deal.
Cook, a second-round pick in 2022, has rushed for 2,638 yards and 20 touchdowns in his career. The two-time Pro Bowler also has caught 97 passes for 883 yards with seven touchdowns.
The Bills extended the contracts of cornerback Christian Benford, defensive end Greg Rousseau, linebacker Terrel Bernard and wide receiver Khalil Shakir this offseason. Cook insinuated on social media early in the offseason that he was looking for $15 million a season.
Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million per season), Christian McCaffrey ($19 million) and Derrick Henry ($15 million) are the only running backs making at least that much per season.

One of the most intriguing quarterback competitions in the NFL this offseason has a new challenger. The Cleveland Browns are adding a former Pro Bowler to their crowded quarterback room. NFL and NFLPA agreed to keep collusion findings secret, per report
The NFL and NFL Players' Association agreed to keep the arbitration decision from earlier this year regarding potential collusion by the league and owners confidential, according to ESPN. The two sides stuck a confidentiality agreement after arbiter Christopher Droney ruled in January that the league had not colluded despite evidence commissioner Roger Goodell and former general counsel Jeff Pash instructed teams at the March 2022 league meeting to limit guaranteed money in players' contracts. Because of the confidentiality agreement, the collusion grievance's findings did not become public until "Pablo Torre Finds Out" reported on the 61-page ruling by Droney in June. The NFLPA is appealing the decision, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person was granted anonymity because of the ongoing legal process. The person also said the arbitration ruling had been discussed with player leadership (such as the executive committee, which includes NFLPA president Jalen Reeves-Maybin and 10 vice presidents) since January, although ESPN reported Howell simply relayed the NFLPA had lost and didn't reveal any findings or details. A three-person panel will hear the appeal. The union hired law firm Wilmer Hale, according to ESPN and confirmed by USA TODAY Sports, to review the activities of executive director Lloyd Howell, who was elected to the position in June 2023. The NFLPA already had legal teams look into Howell's involvement with a licensing group started jointly by the NFLPA and Major League Baseball Players' Association called OneTeam Partners that became the focus of an FBI investigation last month for misuse of funds. ESPN also reported Howell has been a paid, part-time consultant for The Carlyle Group since March 2023, three months prior to his election as head of the union. The Carlyle Group is one of the few private-equity firms currently approved by the league that could seek to invest in NFL franchises. A union lawyer apparently questioned Howell about his involvement and advised him to resign his position at Carlyle, per ESPN. A spokeswoman for the company said in a statement to ESPN "(Howell) had no access to information about the NFL and Carlyle process beyond public news reports due to strict Carlyle information barriers in place" and was not aware of the request from union lawyers for Lloyd to resign from Carlyle. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott says he's fully recovered from hamstring surgery
Dak Prescott is a full go for training camp. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback told reporters Tuesday, July 8 he is fully recovered from the hamstring surgery he underwent last November. Barring any sudden concerns arising during one last visit with team doctors, Prescott anticipates being a full participant at Cowboys training camp. Prescott, 31, suffered a partial avulsion to his right hamstring in a Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons last year. In more explicit terms, Prescott's hamstring tendon tore almost completely off of his thigh bone. He decided to undergo the season-ending surgery to repair his hamstring about one week later. TRAINING CAMP DATES: When does each team's preseason camp start in 2025? Prescott's Tuesday announcement is not a big surprise. The three-time Pro Bowler had participated in all of the Cowboys' drills during spring practices, so all signs were pointing toward a full participation in training camp. Thanks to his injury, the 2023 MVP runner-up was unable to build on a season in which he led the league in passing touchdowns. Prescott finished last year with 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions on a 64.7% completion rate in his eight games played. He, along with the rest of Dallas' veterans and rookies, will report to Oxnard, California for the start of the team's training camp on July 21.
