‘Sardaar Ji 3' controversy: BJP, Javed Akhtar, and Imtiaz Ali speak out in support of Diljit Dosanjh

The Hindu4 days ago
Amid growing backlash over the casting of Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3, several prominent corners, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Javed Akhtar, and Imtiaz Ali, have spoken in support of lead actor and co-producer Diljit Dosanjh.
The controversy began after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) called for strict action against Dosanjh, including revoking his Indian citizenship. Their demand followed the announcement that Sardaar Ji 3 would not be released in India, a decision made by its producers in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. The film, shot before the incident, released overseas on June 27.
BJP national spokesperson R P Singh publicly backed Dosanjh, calling him 'a national asset and a global ambassador of Indian culture.' In a post on X, Singh criticised FWICE's demands as 'shockingly disproportionate,' noting that the film was completed prior to the Pahalgam attack and before any ban on cross-border collaborations.
.@diljitdosanjh is not just a celebrated artist—he's a national asset and a global ambassador of Indian culture. FWICE's call to revoke his Indian citizenship over an inadvertent and pre-incident film shoot is not only unfair but shockingly disproportionate.

He further questioned the selective outrage, pointing out that India's cricket team played against Pakistan shortly before the attack and that television networks regularly feature Pakistani guests. 'Let's not cheapen nationalism or weaponise patriotism,' he wrote, urging FWICE to reconsider its position.
FWICE demanding @diljitdosanjh's citizenship be revoked is absurd.
The film was shot before the Phalgam attack. Boycott it if needed—but don't vilify a national asset.

Punjab BJP's Culture Cell Convenor and actor Hobby Dhaliwal echoed the sentiment during a press conference in Chandigarh. 'Diljit is the son of this soil. Punjab stands with him — and India too,' he stated, calling the criticism 'unjustified' and 'politically motivated.'
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar also came to Dosanjh's defense during a recent interview with NDTV. When informed that Sardaar Ji 3 was shot before the attack, he said, 'Usko pata toh nahi tha ki aisa hoga (He didn't know what would happen,)' adding that the government and censor board should show some sympathy and allow the release.
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who is currently working on a film with Dosanjh, highlighted the actor's patriotism, saying, 'He is a son of the soil… he shows up with the Indian flag at every concert.' Ali also noted that casting decisions are not solely in the hands of actors.
Meanwhile, FWICE has sent a letter urging Ali to withdraw from his collaboration with Dosanjh, warning that continued association sends a 'conflicting message.' They also appealed to the Government of India to blacklist the actor and revoke his citizenship and passport.

Tripura Chief Minister To Expand Cabinet Tomorrow: Report

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha would expand his council of ministers on July 3, sources said on Wednesday. Sources said that on the advice of the Chief Minister, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu would administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new minister at the Raj Bhavan. One probable name -- Kishore Barman -- is doing the rounds about the possible minister. BJP MLA Barman was elected in the 2023 Assembly polls from Nalchar constituency in Sepahijala district. As per the constitutional mandate, the size of the council of ministers is 12, including the Chief Minister. One ministerial berth has been lying vacant. The sources said that at least five BJP MLAs are the contenders for the ministerial berths. On March 8, 2023, the BJP and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) coalition government led by Saha came to power for the second consecutive term. The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), headed by former royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, contested the 2023 Assembly polls separately but in March last year, after signing a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government, joined the BJP-IPFT coalition government, adding a new twist to Tripura politics. Accordingly, two TMP MLAs -- Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma -- were inducted into the ministry. The IPFT currently has one minister -- Sukla Charan Noatia -- in the 11-member council of the ministry. The BJP-IPFT alliance had retained power in Tripura by winning 33 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The TMP, which contested the Assembly elections in 2023 for the first time, won 13 seats of the 42 seats it contested, emerging as the second largest party after the BJP. The CPI-M won 11 seats in the elections while the Congress bagged three. The CPI-M-led Left Front and the Congress had a seat-sharing arrangement for the elections. The TMP became a political force in April 2021 after it wrested power in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. The politically important TTAADC has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura's 10,491 sq km area, and is home to over 1,21,6000 people, of which around 84 per cent are tribals.

Speeding SUV crashes into house injuring residents

Lucknow: A speeding SUV, allegedly with a BJP block chief sticker and an Uttarakhand number plate, rammed into a house in Santguru Ravidas Nagar late Tuesday leaving two residents injured and triggering a political row. The vehicle ploughed through a shop front and boundary wall around 1:50 am, crashing into the living quarters of Vijay and his wife, Gyanmati. The couple's shop and household items were severely damaged while Vijay and their son, Deepak, suffered minor injuries. The vehicle also hit and injured one of its passengers, but the remaining three occupants, including a woman, fled the scene, said police. The incident took place under the Hazratganj police station limits. SHO Vikram Singh said an FIR was registered based on a written complaint from Gyanmati. The vehicle was seized, and legal action is underway under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 125(b) (causing damage), and 324(5) (causing hurt by dangerous means). "Four people, including the driver, have been booked," he added. Police also recovered liquor bottles and other intoxicants from the SUV. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was being driven recklessly at high speed. "There were three men and a woman inside the vehicle. All appeared intoxicated. One remained inside the vehicle with injuries while others managed to escape," a senior officer at the scene said. The Congress party accused the BJP of promoting a culture of impunity. "Beer bottles on the dashboard, drunk BJP men fleeing after wrecking a house—this is the true face of the ruling party," the UP Congress posted on X.
