Penang debunks viral airport fuel leak claims, confirms repairs completed in March

Malay Mail03-05-2025
GEORGE TOWN, May 3 — Work to replace a plane's oil pipe that was reported to have leaked at the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) in Bayan Lepas, near here, was fully completed in March.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said work had been carried out since December last year by an oil and gas company involved.
'I have contacted Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the head of the oil and gas company at LTAPP, they informed me that there was indeed a 'pipe leaking for Petronas Fuel Hydrant' there last year.
'In December (last year) Petronas had carried out pipe replacement works and was fully completed in March. The results of the leak test after the repair found that there were no more new leaks,' he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He said this when asked to comment on a viral message on the Telegram application claiming that there was a jet fuel leak on LTAPP which supposedly has prolonged for more than five years without any solution.
The message had also claimed that anyone passing by the area would smell a very strong jet fuel smell and that the smell was more pronounced in the afternoon when the hot weather caused it to fluctuate and further increase the risk of explosion or fire. — Bernama

Fadhlina to help teen pursue dream to be a teacher

KUALA LUMPUR: The financial problem faced by a teenager who wanted to pursue his studies at the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) has drawn the attention of Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek (pic). In a social media post in conjunction with the Maal Hijrah celebration, Fadhlina expressed her gratitude to those who alerted her to the matter and confirmed that her team is now in contact with the boy's family. She said they are making arrangements for him to continue his studies at the IPG. 'Consider this matter resolved and let's all pray for his success in his future endeavours. 'This is the true spirit of hijrah (migration) that we aspire to,' she said, Bernama reported. The boy's story went viral on social media after reports revealed he might be unable to continue his studies at IPG Kampus Tuanku Bainun due to his family's financial struggles. His father is a rubber tapper while his mother has been battling stage four cancer for more than a year. Muhammad Syahmi Azril Saidiljamal, 18, had said he received an offer to pursue a Bachelor of Education and was scheduled to register at the IPG on Aug 11.

Steven Sim Adopts Fourth USM Student, Offers Support Amid Hardships

GEORGE TOWN, July 7 (Bernama) -- Human Resources Minister Steven Sim today welcomed his fourth 'adopted child' from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), after hearing the inspiring story of Shun Yong, a second-year student facing significant personal challenges. Shun, who lost his mother at age 14 and has never known his father, lives with his 87-year-old grandmother. Despite surviving on just RM500 a month from the Welfare Department (JKM), he persevered academically, achieving four flat distinctions in the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) examination and securing a place at USM. 'Student loans from PTPTN were not enough to cover all his expenses. During semester breaks, Shun took on part-time jobs to support his daily needs and living costs,' Sim shared on Facebook today. Several months ago, Shun nearly missed his semester registration due to unpaid fees. A kind Samaritan named Uncle Ooi, reached out to Sim to highlight the student's plight. Moved by the situation, Sim, who is also the Bukit Mertajam MP, stepped in to clear Shun's tuition fees. Shortly after, Shun informed him that his laptop had broken down, cutting off access to crucial academic documents. 'I went to USM to take him to buy a new laptop, though he only wanted to fix the old one,' said Sim. 'But Uncle Ooi, who is not related to Shun but has quietly supported him all along, had already bought him a new laptop to ensure he wasn't held back by faulty equipment.' 'Today, I invited Shun to be my adopted child, not just to provide financial help, but to show him he's not alone. I want him to know that we stand behind him,' Sim added.
