Soon, WhatsApp will show ads in Status page, promote business Channels
New Delhi
WhatsApp is reportedly testing Status Ads and Promoted Channels for iOS users, introducing ad formats aimed at offering monetisation options for businesses and creators. According to a report by WABetainfo, these features are integrated within the Updates tab—keeping them separate from private chats, groups, and calls.
Both features were previously tested on Android and now appear in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS version 25.20.10.78.
Ads on WhatsApp: What is new
Status Ads
As per the report, Status Ads appear between user-generated status updates and are clearly labeled as 'Sponsored.' Businesses can share promotional content in a familiar swipeable format. Users can view these ads like regular statuses, with options to skip, block, or report them.
WhatsApp says these ads are designed to integrate seamlessly into the Status section without disrupting the experience. The company also clarified that ads are shown using minimal data such as language, region, and previous ad interactions.
Promoted Channels
Promoted Channels allow brands and creators to highlight their public channels in WhatsApp's channel directory. These channels appear higher in search results and are marked with a 'Promoted' tag. For example, a brand or local business can pay to have its channel appear higher in recommendations, increasing its chances of attracting followers.
User control and privacy
Users will receive a banner when the features go live on their accounts. An Activity Report will also be available in account settings, listing all viewed ads, advertisers, and allowing users to block or report any of them.
The report stated that WhatsApp has emphasised that no personal messages or phone numbers are shared with advertisers. Users can optionally link their WhatsApp account with Meta's Accounts Center to enable ad personalisation. This setting can be changed by the user anytime, although it is disabled by default.

iPhone 16 Users Issued Major Security Warning By Indian Govt: What You Should Know
iPhone security warning issued by the Indian government relates to the issues that have been fixed with the latest iOS, macOS and iPadOS update. iPhone 16 and other users have got a security risk alert from the Indian government this week. The new warning has been issued just a few days after Apple released the iOS 18.6 update for users that comes with a host of security fixes. The alert from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In clearly highlights the need for iPhone, iPad and even Mac users to install the latest update immediately. The security warning talks about multiple security vulnerabilities that can be exploited to bypass device control and gain access to confidential data. The latest CERT-In security bulletin dated August 4, 2025 comes with a high severity rating. The alert says, 'Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products due to type confusion, use-after-free errors, out-of-bounds memory access (read/write), integer overflows, buffer overflows, race conditions, logic errors, improper file parsing, insufficient input validation, improper privilege management, and flawed memory handling. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending specially crafted requests on the targeted system." If the hacker is able to exploit these risks, they can use malicious applications to target the devices and make them unusable. As we mentioned before, Apple already knows about the vulnerability and has offered the iOS 18.6 update for the mentioned devices and platforms. All you have to do is go to Settings – General – Software update to install the new update and secure your devices. You can also join the iOS 26 public beta program which is available for iPhone 11 and later models. view comments First Published: August 06, 2025, 07:34 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Safer Internet India and Meta Launch Creator-Led Initiative to Combat Online Frauds and Scams
Meta, in collaboration with Safer Internet India, a technology industry coalition, have announced a creator-driven awareness initiative designed to enhance user safety in response to the escalating threat of online frauds and scams. This initiative will include capacity-building and brainstorming workshops for creators, equipping them with the necessary skills to identify emerging scams, highlighting digital safety tools across Meta platforms, and creating compelling content that educates their audiences on scam prevention. Safer Internet India, supported by Meta, recently hosted a creator focused industry event, 'Creators for Online Trust', bringing together digital creators, technology companies and public sector stakeholders to share valuable industry insights and sector-specific case studies. The event featured an interactive roundtable discussion where participants examined the pivotal role of trusted online voices in countering scams and driving informed digital behaviour among users. Speaking at the launch event, Nathaniel Gleicher, Global Head of Counter Fraud and Director of Security Policy at Meta, said, 'At Meta, we recognize that combatting frauds and scams requires cross-industry action and ongoing education and raising user awareness is crucial to promote a safer online environment. Through our partnership with Safer Internet India, we want to empower creators to spearhead conversations around digital safety. By providing them with comprehensive tools, knowledge, and ongoing support, we strive to foster a collaborative ecosystem where creators not only educate users on identifying and preventing scams but also reinforce consumer habits that include safe and informed digital behavior.' Berges Malu, Co-Convenor, Safer Internet India said, 'We are excited to launch this meaningful initiative keeping the creator ecosystem at the forefront. Popular online voices are uniquely positioned to humanize complex safety information and deliver it with authenticity. This campaign is an important milestone in our broader goal of creating a digitally secure India where every user feels empowered and informed.' Meta recently launched the second edition of its anti-scams campaign, Scams se Bacho 2.0 in collaboration with multiple creators to deliver digital safety tips with a twist. This year's campaign brings scam awareness into public spaces across some of the most iconic streets in Mumbai, using culturally relevant and visually impactful storytelling to inform people about common online scams such as fake loan scams, impersonation and OTP fraud, among others. Safer Internet India, a coalition of nearly two dozen businesses that touch over half a billion Indian consumers, aims to foster user welfare in the Indian digital economy and, in turn, support innovation-led growth. The Coalition includes niche as well as multipurpose digital services, telecom and internet providers, fintech players, and other specialised organisations involved in online trust and safety.
