Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Toyota
Kirloskar
Motor (TKM) bucked the trend, growing market share to 14.9% (+ 260 bp) and 8.3% (+150 bp), respectively. Mahindra and Toyota took major strides on the back of its refreshed portfolio of SUVs over the last couple of years – sales share from metros for the companies rose to 24% (from 14% in FY21) and to 35% (from 31% in FY21), respectively, data from automotive consultancy firm JATO Dynamics showed.
Mahindra is in the process of expanding capacity by 24% to 67,000 units per month by the end of FY27. The company is also looking to set up a new greenfield facility to meet demand, in the mid-term.
Live Events
'Our current SUV capacity utilisation is already over 90%. With the new products we are planning to launch, it's clear we will need additional capacity,' Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and chief executive officer (automotive and farm sector) said in a recent interaction,
In May, Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales) at Maruti Suzuki said, while small car sales have been on a slide impacting more automakers in the segment, demand for SUVs too has waned. 'If we leave out the new models which have come in the last year, industry volumes fell by 8% in May', Banerjee said, adding military operations in border areas of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Jammu & Kashmir also hit the company's sales last month. These states account for 9% of total sales of Maruti Suzuki.
Banerjee, however, said forecasts of above normal monsoons are a 'good sign' and coming months 'will be better.'
Hyundai Motor India said while the week-long maintenance shutdown at its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu last month affected availability of critical models, it is confident of growing sales going ahead. HMIL Chief Operating Officer Tarun Grag said he is 'hopeful of a steady increase in demand with reduced uncertainty on the geo-political front and improved macro-economic situation.'
The recent revisions in income tax slabs coupled with rate cuts being engineered by the central bank will enhance affordability among buyers, said Vivek Srivatsa, chief commercial officer at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, told ET. 'It will release disposable income and boost consumption. But where customers spend the money is a challenge. During and after covid, demand for personal mobility took a huge jump. That has now reduced a bit. Experiences, travelling with family, these things are now more of a priority', said Srivatsa, who also heads operations of the company's internal combustion engine passenger vehicles. Overall he expects the domestic market to grow by about 5% in FY26, he said.
Separately, in the two-wheeler segment,
Hero MotoCorp
managed to edge past rival Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) to regain the top slot with sales of 488,997 units in May. Sales at the Japanese two-wheeler maker fell 7.4% to 417,256 units last month.

In pics: Car sales in India slump in June, SUVs contonue to buck the trend
1/10 The Indian PV market witnessed a mixed sales performance in June 2025, with three of the top four OEMs, including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors recording sales slump amid weak consumer sentiment. The automakers have blamed it to the geopolitical crisis, Weighed down by a slowdown in retail demand, car manufacturers reduced passenger vehicle supplies to the auto dealers in June. This resulted in a seven per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in wholesale dispatch numbers. Seven of the country's largest car manufacturers, cumulatively accounting for 95 per cent of the domestic PV market, dispatched 300,226 units to their dealer networks last month. 2/10 The small car sales continued to see a lacklustre performance last month, while SUVs bucked the trend of declining sales. Since 2019, the Indian PV industry's entry-level price point has increased by more than 70 per cent, which was largely driven by stricter safety and emission regulations. Over the same period, sales of small cars have dropped by more than 70 per cent. This has directly impacted the carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors adversely. 3/10 Maruti Suzuki registered its weakest domestic monthly sales in more than 18 months. The OEM that has the largest pool of small cars saw a 13 per cent YoY drop in wholesale volumes in June 2025, down to 118,906 units compared to 137,160 units sold in June last year. Small cars like Alto K10 and S-Presso saw sales plummet to 6,414 units from 9,395 units. On the other hand, sales of compact models like Baleno, Celerio, WagonR, Swift, Ignis, and Dzire declined to 54,177 units from 64,049 units. Sales of the brand's utility vehicles, including Grand Vitara, Brezza, and Jimny, dropped to 47,947 units from 52,373 units, despite high demand for SUVs. 4/10 Hyundai reported a 12 per cent drop in wholesale numbers last month, with 44,024 units sold as compared to 50,103 units recorded in June 2024. Hyundai has blamed this on the geopolitical crisis and low consumer sentiment as key factors and anticipates recovery with lower repo rates, improving liquidity and the Talegaon plant production. However, Hyundai Creta retained the crown of highest selling passenger vehicle for the third consecutive time in June 2025. 5/10 Tata Motors too posted a steep decline last month, with its wholesale volume slumping 15 per cent YoY to 37,083 units, including electric vehicles. While demand for its ICE-powered models came under pressure, the homegrown auto company noted continued strength in its EV portfolio, where it sells models like Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and recently introduced Harrier EV. 6/10 Kia recorded a three per cent YoY sales slump at 20,625 units in June 2025. The South Korean car manufacturer under the Hyundai group sells popular cars like Sonet, Seltos, Carens and Carens Clavis, among others. The car manufacturer has a presence in the Indian electric car market as well. 7/10 Honda Cars India too reported a 22 per cent sales slump with 5,124 units in June 2025, comprising 4,618 units sold in the domestic market and 506 units exported. Domestic sales of the company dropped by 3.9 per cent, while exports saw a slump of 89.8 per cent YoY. The Japanese car manufacturer sells popular models like the Amaze, City, and Elevate. 8/10 Mahinda is the only car manufacturer among the top four in the Indian passenger vehicle market that reported growth last month. The homegrown auto giant retained its second position in the sales chart last month. The automaker registered an 18 per cent YoY wholesale growth, ending the last month with 47,306 units. The OEM sells some of the popular SUVs like Thar, XUV 3XO, XUV700, Scorpio N, Bolero Neo, Scorpio Classic, Thar Roxx, etc. 9/10 Toyota Kirloskar Motor too was able to buck the trend slightly. The Japanese car manufacturer registered a modest three per cent YoY increase in June wholesales with 26,453 units. The carmaker sells popular models like the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, among others. 10/10 JSW MG Motor India charted a 21 per cent YoY sales growth in June sales numbers, with 5,829 units sold. The automaker sells models like the Hector, ZS EV, Comet, Gloster, etc. However, since the launch of the Windsor EV, MG has been witnessing continuous growth in its passenger vehicle sales. Setback for Trump: South Korea calls trade talks ‘very difficult', deal unlikely before July 9 deadline
Trade discussions have already been delayed for months due to political instability in South Korea following the impeachment of Lee's conservative predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol read more President Donald Trump speaks during an event to announce new tariffs in the Rose Garden at the White House, on April 2, 2025, in Washington. File image/ AP South Korea's president has expressed scepticism that fraught trade talks with the United States can be concluded before Washington's July 9 deadline to avert steep tariffs, saying that 'the two sides are not really clear on what they want'. President Lee Jae Myung told reporters on Thursday (July 3) that Seoul was 'doing its utmost' to find a resolution to negotiations triggered by US President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 25 per cent 'reciprocal' tariff on Asia's fourth-largest economy. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Delays, uncertainty remains despite Trump's threats However, he downplayed expectations of a breakthrough before the US resumes tariffs on multiple countries. 'We are actively identifying and developing many agenda items across various areas,' Lee said. '[But] at this point, it is difficult to say with certainty whether they can be concluded' by the deadline. His comments followed a fresh warning by Trump earlier this week that he might raise tariffs on Japan to between 30 and 35 per cent from the current 24 per cent. That move has rattled officials in Seoul, who had hoped for a deadline extension. Trade discussions have already been delayed for months due to political instability in South Korea following the impeachment of Lee's conservative predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol. Financial Times cited multiple sources familiar with the talks as saying South Korea had indicated its willingness to address its $55 billion trade surplus with the US. Proposals include increasing purchases of American gas and defence equipment, and removing non-tariff barriers that had been publicly criticised by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Negotiators are also discussing South Korean investments in US shipyards to help revitalise American shipbuilding, including for the US Navy. Another option under discussion is a Korean commitment to buy gas from a proposed project in Alaska backed by the Trump administration. However, one source noted that progress on shipbuilding cooperation had been hampered by US protectionist legislation that restricts foreign participation in the sector. Korean companies have also been reluctant to commit to the Alaska liquefied natural gas project, whose commercial viability remains uncertain, according to energy industry experts. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD US-South Korea trade The US accounted for 18 per cent of South Korean exports in 2024, with major goods including cars, auto parts, machinery and intermediate products used in Korean-run manufacturing plants in America. South Korea already has a comprehensive free trade agreement with the US, under which most tariff rates are supposed to be zero. However, the country is still pushing for the removal of a 25 per cent US tariff on auto imports, which has led to a significant drop in Korean car exports to the American market. South Korean manufacturers have also been affected by US tariffs on steel and household appliances. Seoul fears additional tariffs on chip and pharmaceutical imports could follow later this year, potentially undermining any deal reached this month. One person familiar with the discussions said American negotiators had grown frustrated that their Korean counterparts were 'not being ambitious enough'. But they also acknowledged that Seoul remained unclear about Washington's precise demands. 'All they know is that whatever it is, the Americans want more,' the person said.

Maruti Suzuki's SMS To Car Owners About Weather Reminds Reddit Why It Dominates In India
Last Updated: Maruti Suzuki's thoughtful message to its owners ahead of rainfall in Goa has impressed car enthusiasts on Reddit. As Delhiites collectively outrage over giving up their cars at drastically reduced prices due to a fuel ban law that denies them petrol and diesel in the capital city, an owner of Maruti took their time out to laud the car manufacturer for looking out for their customers. In a Reddit post that has gone viral, a car owner who goes by the username 'Inj3kt0r' shared a screenshot on the subreddit r/CarsIndia that showed a PSA sent out by Maruti. 'Dear Customer, IMD/Accuweather has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in GOA over next few days," the message purportedly sent by the automobile manufacture read. 'Please avoid parking vehicles under trees, temporary structures or near walls," it added. 'Ensure the parking brake is applied and wheels are locking using wheel blocks," the message continued before advising the car owners to avoid taking their vehicles in waterlogged areas. The company further added that in the unfortunate case of someone finding themselves stuck in a waterlogged area, they mustn't start their vehicles so as to avoid engine damage. Message From Owner Sharing the screenshot of the message allegedly sent by Maruti Suzuki, the car owner reported that they were happy that the company looked out for their customers, which they hadn't experienced with other top car manufacturers in the country. 'After owning non suzuki cars over the last decade went and bought an Ertiga this year, honestly surprised that Maruti sends out this SMS looking out for customers well being,Till date have not seen any other manufacturer do this, I have a Mahindra, Tata and Skoda cars as well, (sic)" the Maruti Ertiga owner wrote. Reddit Reacts 'Whereas some companies will send you a legal notice for a defamation case when you just complained on twitter for unresolved issue on a new purchased bike, (sic)" lamented one user in response. 'Trust me, it's the mileage and then the cheaper maintenance!" other added. Adding that by sending out the PSA, Maruti were invariably cutting down on added, unproductive repair work, a third wrote: 'It is also possible that they do not want a hassle of repairing vehicles, piling up of broken cars after flood. They want to sell more vehicles, serve better, keep their staff happy. Even if the 10% recipients pay attention to such messages, MS will save themselves from massive unproductive repairing work. Actually they should send SMSes in regional languages as well (sic)." Maruti Sales Although Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker topped the chart of passenger vehicle sales in the month of June 2025, the company registered a 13.3% y-o-y drop as they sold 1,18,906 units compared to 1,37,160 units in June 2024, reported MoneyControl.
