As the show's statement puts it, 'Whether a fan of the sport and the local team or not, it's impossible to deny the power a franchise has on this city. There seems to be no hesitation to hand over blank cheques for an arena while cutting vital services, and displacing the most vulnerable population for the optics, to appear 'world class' — desperately trying to believe we are something else.'

Among the artists are the brilliant AJA Louden, whose works have been commissioned by the organization to celebrate and amplify the team's Black history, and Veronica Fuentes, whose excellent 'Stop the Sweeps' stickers drew attention to the aggressive gentrification and displacement of city centre residents.

Cutoffs: The most delightfully smiley-punk Bob Prodor — longtime illustrator of Corb Lund swag — co-fronts terrific razor-rock band Cutoffs Friday, downstairs at River City Revival.

Hard-pounding, high-energy and well worth standing in the front row to watch, there's something a little rockabilly hidden under layers of SNFU-ish punkiness and buzzsaw metal guitar. But really, they're just an awesome rock and roll band, let's not complicate it.

'I think for me it was not the easiest start with the injury and stuff, but the only goal that I had for myself this year was to really enjoy playing again,' Laine added. 'I definitely did that, even though it was hard at times, but I still enjoyed every bit of it. …. He played only 18 games with the Blue Jackets in 2023-24 — posting 6-3-9 totals — before suffering a broken left clavicle that required surgery and a month later he entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program while dealing with mental-health issues. Last summer, Laine and Smith started a new mental health initiative called From Us to You on Instagram. 'We're pretty proud of it the thing we're doing,' Laine said about From Us to You after being traded to the Canadiens. 'I had a lot of positive feedback and it's pretty close to both of our hearts. We both know from experience that life is not easy. So I think it's more about talking about it and that's kind of my approach to this. For me, talking was the thing that's been helping. For somebody else it might be something else, but I can only speak from my own experience. 'Just try to spread the positive about talking about these hard things,' he added. 'It's not easy, it's not fun, but it's so helpful in the long run and that's kind of what I've realized during my journey. I just figured start this project and kind of destigmatize this whole mental health space and it's OK to seek for help and it's not a weakness, it's a strength. So that's kind of where we're at with this and we're really proud of it and taking it as high as we can. Hopefully help a lot of people along the way.' 'But when you look at the circumstances that a lot of people don't when the judge you — a guy who hasn't played in a year and was almost going to pretty much retire came back and had a knee injury right away and then came back and did what I did this year still … I think I'm pretty happy with that. 'I know a lot of guys wouldn't have done as well as I did and when you look at the circumstances that weren't easy at all — and I had a ton of fun doing it, which was my only thing I wanted to do this year,' he added. 'Everything else on top of that was going to be a bonus, so I'm satisfied.' After the wedding, Laine and his new wife were headed to Italy for their honeymoon. Smith told People she's ready for 'baby Laines.'
