Activists protest over lack of amenities on Chamundi Hills

The Hindu01-07-2025
Activists of the Karnataka Sena Pade (KSP) staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday against the alleged failure of the authorities to make proper arrangements for devotees visiting the Chamundeshwari temple on the Chamundi Hills last Friday.
The temple is visited by lakhs of devotees on every Friday of the Ashada month, and the district administration should make arrangements for devotees for a hassle-fee darshan.
But there were criticisms that the authorities failed to anticipate the turnout, and the arrangements were found to be lacking. Devotees spent hours standing in queue without water and had a tough time to gain entry into the temple.
The protesters questioned the district administration and the State government on the issue and alleged that they were focusing more on 'paid darshan', for which there was a separate queue and the entry fee for a devotee was ₹2,000.
They described the paid darshan concept as a 'loot'. The protest was led by KSP district president Tejesh Lokesh Gowda.

The MPs asked about the loss of property and human life due to heavy rainfall, the total human casualties and property losses across various states, and whether the government has constituted any central team to visit the affected areas. 'Due to highly favourable synoptic systems and monsoonal winds, central and western parts of India, have experienced heavy rainfall spells, leading to excess to large excess rainfall over these areas, due to which early flood incidents have also been reported,' a written response said, adding the ministry does not centrally maintain the data of damages. As per the National Policy on Disaster Management, the primary responsibility for disaster management rests with the State Governments concerned. However, financial assistance to notified calamities is provided from SDRF/ NDRF as per established procedure. The State Government concerned is required to undertake necessary relief measures in the landslides affected areas out of the SDRF, already placed with the State Government, as per Government of India norms,' Centre added.

Bhatti cries foul over BJP's stance on TG caste survey

Hyderabad: Refuting the accusations of BJP State president N Ramchander Rao that the Telangana's caste survey was unscientific and flawed, the Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka reiterated that the survey was conducted adhering to scientific standards and with proper planning. Condemning the BJP's criticism, he called it disruptive politics aimed at obstructing positive social change. Deputy CM who was briefing to media on the recently conducted Socio-Economic Caste Survey by the State Government at Secretariat expressed his anguish after the Telangana BJP reportedly criticised the implementation of the survey. He elaborated on the chronology of events leading up to the survey, underlining the transparent scientific approach adopted by the government. Bhatti Vikramarka attributed the conceptual foundation of the survey to Congress leader Shri Rahul Gandhi. He said that it was Rahul Gandhi's idea to initiate such a survey in Telangana, and this has now had a ripple effect at the national level, prompting the Union Government to consider including caste-related data in the upcoming national census. The Deputy Chief Minister also informed the media that a high-level delegation, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and comprising key ministers including himself, will visit New Delhi on July 24. The delegation aims to brief the Congress central leadership on the modalities and execution of the caste survey in Telangana. In addition, the delegation will meet Members of Parliament across party lines to garner support for the proposed legislation that would enable the inclusion of caste data in the national census. The State Government is committed to championing the cause of social justice and equitable development through informed policymaking based on comprehensive data, he added.

Telangana to launch sample survey for upcoming census

Hyderabad: Telangana state is set to launch a sample survey (pre-test) for the upcoming Population Census – 2027 in September this year. This pilot project will utilise advanced technology and dedicated apps to conduct the survey across two mandals and one municipality within the state. During the month-long pre-test, central and state authorities will meticulously study the challenges encountered, in preparation for the main nationwide survey scheduled for March 2027. Official sources indicate that three key applications – House Listing, Population Census, and Digital Layout Map apps – will be deployed for the sample survey. The government will strategically select the mandals based on their diversified demography, with a particular focus on remote habitations and tribal villages. Census officials will submit their list of proposed mandals to the central authorities for finalisation, who will then provide comprehensive training to local government officials, who will serve as enumerators and monitoring staff. GPS technology will also be incorporated to verify the prompt performance of enumerators and supervisors in the field, underlining the extensive use of digital technology in this sample survey. During the process, enumerators will also identify specific challenges associated with surveying areas located in difficult terrain. The State Government will meticulously compile the data from the sample survey and document all challenges faced during its execution. This comprehensive report will then be submitted to the Union Government, informing the planning and execution of the full national census.
