Bhanupali-Bilaspur-Beri railway line project: HC issues notice to Centre, H.P. govt. over fissures in houses

The Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued notices to the Union Ministry of Railways, the State government, and others, seeking their response to a petition that has raised concerns over fissures in houses in some villages of Bilaspur district allegedly caused by ongoing tunnelling work for the Bhanupali-Bilaspur-Beri railway line project. In its direction on July 2, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia and Justice Ranjan Sharma has asked the respondents to file their reply within four weeks to the Public Interest Litigation plea filed by social activist Rajnish Sharma. A 63-km broad gauge railway line from Bhanupali near Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district of Punjab to Beri in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh is being constructed. The petition alleges that unscientific excavation and blasting for the railway project have caused significant damage to homes in Nog, Bamta, and Kallar panchayats in Bilaspur, endangering the lives and livelihoods of villagers, many of whom are from below poverty line (BPL) families. Villagers have reported big cracks in their homes due to the construction of the tunnel, which is located just 10 metres from some residences, the petition stated. The petitioner alleged that authorities have failed to rehabilitate or resettle affected families. He urged the court to direct authorities to immediately halt the tunnelling work, acquire the affected land, and rehabilitate villagers in accordance with Corporate Social Responsibility and Rehabilitation and Resettlement norms. Residents of Badhiyad village in Nog panchayat have been staging a 'chain hunger strike' near the tunnel's entrance since June 1 to raise their concerns. 'This village is right above the tunnel and has posed a serious threat to the houses of about 20-odd families. We are not against the railway line, which is for public benefit, but their homes and lives are at stake,' the petitioner said.

Activists protest over lack of amenities on Chamundi Hills

Activists of the Karnataka Sena Pade (KSP) staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday against the alleged failure of the authorities to make proper arrangements for devotees visiting the Chamundeshwari temple on the Chamundi Hills last Friday. The temple is visited by lakhs of devotees on every Friday of the Ashada month, and the district administration should make arrangements for devotees for a hassle-fee darshan. But there were criticisms that the authorities failed to anticipate the turnout, and the arrangements were found to be lacking. Devotees spent hours standing in queue without water and had a tough time to gain entry into the temple. The protesters questioned the district administration and the State government on the issue and alleged that they were focusing more on 'paid darshan', for which there was a separate queue and the entry fee for a devotee was ₹2,000. They described the paid darshan concept as a 'loot'. The protest was led by KSP district president Tejesh Lokesh Gowda.

NIMHANS trains anganwadi workers in Ramanagara district under ‘Suraksha Project'

The Suraksha Project, a comprehensive suicide prevention initiative implemented by NIMHANS in collaboration with the State government and Himalaya Wellness Company, expanded its community training activities in Ramanagara district. It aims at building a robust community network of trained gatekeepers, including police personnel, teachers, anganwadi workers, and other frontline stakeholders. Through structured training, the project empowers them to recognise early warning signs, offer empathetic first-line support, and connect vulnerable individuals with appropriate mental health services. As part of this ongoing programme, gatekeeper training for anganwadi teachers and workers began on June 18 at the district headquarters in Ramanagara. This follows the successful training of over 700 police personnel in the district last month, equipping them with the skills to identify and support individuals at risk of self-harm, said Anish V. Cherian, additional professor, Department of Psychiatric Social Work at NIMHANS. Underscoring the vital role of anganwadi workers in community wellbeing, Mr. Cherian said these workers are among the most trusted and well-connected members of the community. 'Their close relationship with families positions them to identify signs of distress and provide timely help,' he said. Shivakumar, assistant secretary, Ramanagara Zilla Panchayat emphasised the critical need for community-led suicide prevention efforts. 'The loss of life to suicide is a loss to the entire community, not just an individual or family. It is vital that we explore every possible measure to prevent such tragedies,' he added.
