Assam Rifles Seizes Meth Tablets, Heroin Valued At Rs 40.05 Crore In Mizoram
A Defence spokesman said that after getting intelligence inputs, the Assam Rifles troops have launched an operation at Melbuk areas in border town Zokhawthar in eastern Mizoram's Champhai district on Saturday night.
'On conducting a thorough search, the para-military personnel recovered 1.041 kg heroin and 9.381 kg methamphetamine tablets valued approximately 40.05 crores from an abandoned place,' he said.
The seized contrabands have been handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Officials suspect that the Methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba or party tablets, and heroin were smuggled from Myanmar.
Methamphetamine, which comes in tablet, powder, or crystalline form -- commonly called ice or crystal meth -- is a stimulant that suppresses the need for sleep and is often used by partygoers and young adults.
Myanmar's Chin State has emerged as a major hub for drug trafficking, wildlife smuggling, and other illicit activities.
The contraband is often routed through six districts in Mizoram, Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip -- which share unfenced borders of 510 km with Myanmar.
Meanwhile, Assam Rifles have been conducting awareness campaigns like seminars and group discussions highlighting the bad effects of the drugs and drugs trafficking are a punishable offence under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
The Defence spokesman said that the aim of these awareness campaigns is to educate the local population, especially the youth, about the harmful effects of drug abuse and the serious legal consequences associated with drug trafficking and peddling.
The speakers in this campaign highlighted the rising threat of narcotics in society and especially in border areas of Mizoram and urged the participants to stay vigilant and not to get entrapped.

Boy, 13, brutally killed after being kidnapped in Bengaluru
A 13-year-old boy was found dead in a deserted area in Bengaluru on Thursday, a day after being kidnapped on his way to a Class 8 student at Christ School, was kidnapped on Wednesday evening while returning home from his tuition class in Shantiniketan Layout, Arakere. His father, an assistant professor at a reputed private college, lodged a missing person complaint at the Hulimavu Police Station after the boy did not return home by the expected Thursday evening, Nishchith's body was discovered in a deserted area along Kaggalipura Road. 3 killed in elephant attack in Dhenkanal, ranger & forester suspended
Bhubaneswar: Three persons, including two women, were trampled to death by a tusker in Dhenkanal district on Thursday. The state govt responded by suspending a forester and a ranger, with forest minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia promising strict action against any personnel found negligent. Odisha reported 154 human deaths due to elephant attacks in the 2023-24 period, the highest for any Indian state this year and the highest for Odisha in the past five years. This was revealed in a reply by Union minister of state for environment, forest and climate change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Also, Odisha reported 624 elephant deaths over the past five years, the highest among Indian states. The incident took place when a tusker, part of a herd of three, attacked the victims near a pond in Baghadharia village, within Hindol police station area of Rasol forest section. Divisional forest officer (DFO) Sumit Kar identified the deceased as Jhulana Dehury (55), her brother-in-law Karunakar Dehury (60), a farmer, and co-villager Sashi Sahoo (64). The attack happened between 4:45 am and 5:15 am.
