City finalises Broadacres intersection after months of chaos
Ward 94 councillor David Foley confirmed, on July 4, that the resurfacing around the traffic circle has been completed, making a huge difference for daily commuters who have endured months of potholes, damage, and delays.

'JRA have completed the circle now. In fact, the potholes have been filled as well, which was one of the main concerns at the entrance of the circle. The resurfacing all around the traffic circle has now been completed, making a huge difference so that people can traverse the circle area a lot better.'
The repairs come after repeated calls from Foley and residents, who flagged the intersection as a danger zone, especially after heavy rains and suspected underground pipe leaks worsened the potholes and surface damage.
Earlier this week, Foley confirmed that Johannesburg Water had fixed the leaks, allowing JRA to proceed with the long-awaited tar resurfacing.
A second layer of tar was applied earlier this month, and now the resurfacing of the circle itself is complete. 'There is still quite a bit of work that needs to be done, like resetting the kerbing and all that kind of stuff, but that'll be done in due course.'
For now, residents can enjoy a much smoother drive through the intersection as final touches are prepared in the coming weeks.

Shining Verstappen shades Piastri for pole at Silverstone
Max Verstappen produced one of the finest and fastest qualifying laps of his career on Saturday to seize pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix and demonstrate why he is the hottest property in Formula One. The four-time world champion was struggling with a strong wind and cool and damp conditions after choosing a low downforce set-up that trimmed his wings but enabled higher speed on the straights. Before his final run of a tense and closely-fought qualifying hour, Verstappen was two-tenths slower than McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri, but the Dutchman powered to a fastest lap of one minute and 24.892 seconds to beat the Australian by 0.103 seconds. "You went motor racing Max!" said his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, his deadpan delivery hiding Red Bull's delight as the team fight to find the performance that will ensure their star driver stays with them next year. The 27-year-old Dutchman, who has declared he wants to stay, has been linked with Mercedes, whose team boss Toto Wolff has confirmed making contact. Unconfirmed Italian media reports this week claimed Verstappen had agreed to the move. Verstappen did his talking on the track, claiming his third pole at Silverstone and the 44th of the career with a virtuoso lap to keep alive faint hopes of defending his drivers' title in the second half of the season. Weather permitting, a third British victory would help him trim his 61-point deficit to Piastri but if it rains, as forecast, Verstappen's set-up might leave him vulnerable to his rivals including Lando Norris, in the second McLaren, who is 15 points behind Piastri in the title race and third on the grid. "The changes helped a lot and the car definitely turned in better," said Verstappen. "On my last lap, it all came together and the balance was much better and we were fast on the straights, but the high-speed corners were more difficult. "We are pushing for more performance. It was tricky out there with the wind as the car is so sensitive to it. We have to wait to see what tomorrow will do and if there's rain around or not. "I'm happy with qualifying. It's a big boost for the team as well and I'm excited to go racing tomorrow. We'll try! We are going to have fun and try to do the best we can." - 'It's tough' - Piastri was less happy. "I was trying to think of how I was going to go faster and I didn't," he said. "The last lap was a little bit messy, but it's been tight all weekend. "I think my first lap was very I left a little bit on the table." "It's tough, especially when you think it's a good lap. You don't want to overdo it and try and go over the limit. There were a couple of corners where maybe I was a bit safe on the way in and tried to make up for it on the way out and it didn't quite work." Norris was third in the second McLaren, a tenth adrift. "It was tough," Norris said. "We are not just fast enough today, but it's all good fun and I am happy with third. Credit to Max, he did a great job. It's going to be fun tomorrow, a good battle." George Russell was next in a Mercedes. The Ferraris of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc filled the third row. Kimi Antonelli was seventh fastest in the second Mercedes but suffered a three-place penalty.

Verstappen shades Piastri for pole at Silverstone
"We are quite quick on the straight, we have to wait and see what tomorrow will do but I am happy -- it is a big boost for the team and excited to go racing tomorrow.' (Photo by Andrej ISAKOVIC / AFP) Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed pole for the British Grand Prix after qualifying at Silverstone on Saturday. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start alongside the Dutchman on the front row of Sunday's race. Piastri's teammate Lando Norris starts on the second row with the Mercedes of George Russell for company. Piastri took provisional pole until Verstappen produced a perfect final flying lap to front the grid by only a tenth of a second from the Australian. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc made it an all Ferrari third row. 'It was tricky out there with the wind, it was all shifting around a bit and around here with these cars, it is extremely sensitive to it,' said four-time former world champion Verstappen. 'This is a proper track, when you have to go flat out you have to be super committed. 'We are quite quick on the straight, we have to wait and see what tomorrow will do but I am happy — it is a big boost for the team and excited to go racing tomorrow,' the 27-year-old added.

Brad Pitt reveals why Tom Cruise passed on Ford v Ferrari
Brad Pitt revealed why he and Tom Cruise pulled out of starring in the acclaimed racing film Ford v Ferrari . The two Hollywood icons were originally set to star in the film about the legendary 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race. However, the project fell through over a simple yet very Tom Cruise-like reason: he wouldn't be driving enough on screen. In a recent interview with The National , Pitt explained that both he and Cruise were eager to take the wheel in the film. Cruise wanted to play Carroll Shelby, the visionary car designer. Brad Pitt aimed for the role of Ken Miles, the daring British driver. However, Cruise discovered that Shelby's character wouldn't be behind the wheel much. This didn't sit well with the star, known for performing his own high-risk stunts. 'Tom and I, for a while there, were on Ford v Ferrari with Joe [Kosinski] to direct. This was about 10 years before the guys who actually made it — and made it a great movie,' Pitt said. 'What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive. He wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to play Ken Miles. And when Tom Cruise realised that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn't come through', according to The Hollywood Reporter The roles eventually went to Christian Bale as Ken Miles and Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby. They were cast under the direction of James Mangold. Brad Pitt's revelation gives a new perspective on what might have been a thrilling collaboration. Pitt, who recently starred in the Formula One drama F1: The Movie , also spoke about the possibility of a sequel. He admitted he would love to get back behind the wheel but acknowledged the story's focus would likely remain on the younger character Joshua Pierce, played by Damson Idris. 'Where does Sonny [Pitt's character] fit in? I'm not sure. Sonny's probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that,' he said. Brad Pitt also expressed enthusiasm about potentially working with Cruise again on a follow-up to Cruise's 1990 NASCAR film Days of Thunder . 'I'd love to,' Pitt said, 'but I'm not going to hang my ass off aeroplanes and stuff like that'. This is a nod to Cruise's famously daring stunts. As Pitt put it, 'F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce and the rest of the team fighting for a championship.' But for now, fans can only imagine what might have been if Cruise had taken the wheel in Ford v Ferrari .
