5 drivers who could replace Max Verstappen if Red Bull star gets suspended
Max Verstappen is teetering on the brink of a one-race suspension following his reckless run-in with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix two weeks ago.
The FIA hit the Red Bull star and four-time world champion with a 10-second penalty in the race, followed by three penalty points on his super license. That means Verstappen enters the Canadian Grand Prix with 11 points total on his super license in total. F1's rules dictate 12 penalty points in a 12-month period trigger a one-race suspension.

Fortunately for Max, two of his points will expire at the end of June. Unfortunately, he doesn't plan on changing his driving style at all before then. Which means Red Bull must be prepared for the possibility Verstappen is sidelined if he gets assessed another point.
So who drives one of the best cars in the world if Max is out? Here's a look at team principal Christian Horner's best option.
Liam Lawson

The driver of the No. 30 VCARB car would be a natural selection to slot into Max's seat — especially after he impressed Horner in practice last season while driving a Red Bull, leading the team to cut Daniel Ricciardo to make space for Lawson.
Isack Hadjar

Lawson's VCARB teammate might be the better driver this season, but would Red Bull really consider messing with something that's working so well? Hadjar is ninth in the driver standings with 21 points — compared to Lawson's four — and even the Paris native is worried about what a call-up might look like.

'It's a bit scary," Hadjar said Thursday. "I wouldn't feel ready. I'm just nine races in. It looks to be complicated when I look at Yuki [Tsunoda] and Liam, who are very quality drivers. So no, I'm not very ready, but I would always be here for the call, that's for sure.'
Arvid Lindblad

Just 17 years old (until August), Red Bull successfully petitioned the FIA to grant the Formula 2 driver a super license prior to his 18th birthday. That might be all the evidence necessary to anoint the rising British star Verstappen's back-up.
Per ESPN's Laurence Edmondson:
[Lindblad] is being lined up to take part in free practice sessions ahead of the August break, but will now also qualify as a reserve driver for Red Bull and its junior team Racing Bulls.
...Although the application for Lindblad's superlicence was submitted before Verstappen received three penalty points at the last round in Spain, he would present an alternative to current reserve Ayuma Iwasa, who is currently racing in Japan's Super Formula.

Well, this one should be obvious, but if Lindblad is getting approval to race it sure seems like Red Bull is content to leave Iwasa in the Super Formula car. That said, he's still on Horner's roster and remains a solid option.
Daniel Ricciardo

Could Red Bull's prodigal son return once again and finally get his storybook ending!?

No, don't count on it. Ricciardo hasn't been around the paddock at all lately and it would take a lot from both sides to get the veteran race ready. Still, Horner knows him well and knows what he's getting. If he'd rather put an experienced F1 driver in the car rather than an up-and-comer, there are way worse options.

Activists: FIFA should protect World Cup attendees from immigration enforcement
A coalition of community organizations convened on FIFA's doorstep in Coral Gables on Monday afternoon to urge the soccer world's governing body to protect attendees at World Cup events from 'overzealous immigration enforcement.' About a dozen activists gathered on the sidewalk outside the gold-toned metal spirals that embellish the main entrance of FIFA's new legal and compliance division office, holding signs reading 'FIFA, eyes on the ball, ICE off the field!' and 'FIFA, the world is watching!' Speakers said recent actions by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials had provoked increasing concern over the safety of local residents attending the Club World Cup games this summer at Hard Rock Stadium. The stadium will also host seven World Cup matches next year. 'We've long been concerned about ICE at sporting events under this administration, but our concerns have been heightened by irresponsible statements from ICE and CBP,' said Thomas Kennedy, an immigrant rights advocate with the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Kennedy highlighted a June 10 post by Customs and Border Protection on social media site X that said the federal law enforcement agency would be 'suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games.' The post was later deleted but not before arousing the concern of immigration rights groups in South Florida. The same day, NBC Miami reported that ICE had advised, in a statement regarding enforcement at Club World Cup games, that 'all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status.' When asked to clarify, ICE told the Miami Herald: 'As is customary for an event of this magnitude with national security implications, ICE will be working alongside our Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice partners to help ensure the safety and security of the event.' The following night, on June 11, a celebration of the upcoming World Cup hosted by Spanish-language television network Telemundo aboard a boat in Biscayne Bay was abruptly canceled following a surprise inspection by the Coast Guard, alongside at least one border patrol agent. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who was aboard the boat at the time, said in a statement that the inspection was 'deeply troubling' and 'should not have happened.' Coast Guard spokesperson Chief Petty Officer Nicole Groll told the Herald that the inspection 'was not a targeted immigration thing.' On Monday, Kennedy told the crowd outside FIFA's offices that his group had confirmed that federal immigration agents had been present at recent Club World Cup games. But Kennedy said his organization had not witnessed immigration agents at the games indiscriminately detaining attendees or demanding they provide proof of residency. 'FIFA has an opportunity to use the power of the game and culture to help us meet this moment,' said Laura Muñoz, the civic engagement director for the Florida Student Power Network. 'Soccer has the power to bring us together, and that's what we need the most right now — that's what we're asking for FIFA to do.' Muñoz told the press conference that FIFA needed to recognize that many of Miami's soccer fans were staying home and out of the bleachers because of fear over immigration enforcement. 'Especially for undocumented youth, they can't feel safe going to a game,' Muñoz said. 'This situation has gotten out of hand.' FIFA did not provide a formal response to the press conference as of late Monday, but a June 17 press release from the organization highlighted the 'record crowds and unmatched passion' of the matches at Hard Rock Stadium. The statement also said fans from over 130 countries had purchased tickets, traveling from across the globe to attend the games. 'FIFA is proud of the unique and multicultural atmosphere and support this new competition has already generated,' FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in the statement. 'FIFA Club World Cup continues to grow into the undisputed pinnacle of global club football.'

FIA Comes Under Fire as Franco Colapinto Receives Death Threats
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Alpine Formula One driver Franco Colapinto has been receiving hate comments on Instagram for nearly crashing into Oscar Piastri during the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring. Piastri's fans targeted the Argentinian driver on his most recent post, with some even typing out death threats. The incident between Colapinto and Piastri occurred in the last stage of the race in Spielberg. Piastri was held up by the back-marker traffic while battling for the top spot with Lando Norris. Colapinto and Yuki Tsunoda were fighting for a position outside of the points at the same time. When the blue flags are out, cars that are about to get lapped must clear the way for the leading cars. However, occupied by his battle, Colapinto nearly made contact with Piastri when the McLaren driver tried to pass him. Franco Colapinto of Argentina and Alpine F1 on the drivers parade prior to the F1 Grand Prix of Austria at Red Bull Ring on June 29, 2025 in Spielberg, was then forced onto the grass in an attempt to prevent a collision. Colapinto eventually gave way after noticing the MCL39 in his mirror. He received a five-second penalty from the FIA stewards for forcing a car off the race track. Despite the penalty, Piastri's fans were not satisfied. They vented frustration on Colapinto's most recent post. The comments section became a war zone, with Colapinto's fans calling for the FIA's intervention for the hate comments. Some comments are posted below: One fan posted: "F1, FIA this is death threat don't go. Not to say anything?????" [sic] Another fan asked for Colapinto to be respected: "FIA we ask respect towards Franco Colapinto for verbal aggressions and threats. F1." An Argentinian fan commented: "FIA, F1. Are hate and bad comments only punished when they're from an Argentinian? Be fair and treat everyone equally." This fan was furious about the hate Colapinto was receiving: "F1, Sky Sports F1, ESPN F1, FIA. WE KINDLY INVITE YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE COMMENT SECTION AND READ THE AGGRESIVE COMMENTS, BULLYING AND HATE OUR DRIVER @francolapinto IS RECEIVING DUE TO THE INCIDENT WITH @oscarpiastri during today's GP. Now that the tables have turned, we hope you voice your opinion same way you did in the past. ALL DRIVERS DEMAND THE SAME MISTAKE REGARDLESS OF THEIR COUNTRY OF BIRTH!" [sic] Several F1 drivers have faced online hate in the recent past. Yuki Tsunoda was targeted by Colapinto's fans online after he revealed his frustration at being blocked by the Alpine driver at Imola in the first practice session. However, Colapinto urged his fans to have respect for other drivers. He said: "I know they are extremely passionate, and they are always very harsh on people. They have to give respect, and that's what we all want. "There is a lot of hate on social media ... so of course we always try and want, for all the drivers, to keep it respectful and keep it calm there."
