Defence closes case in Zayn Rayyan child neglect trial
Defence counsel Haresh Mahadevan, representing Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30, informed the Sessions Court that the defence was closing its case after the testimony of child psychologist Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, 49, who took the stand yesterday.
'The defence has no further witnesses, and we close our case,' he said.
Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh fixed Sept 8 for written submissions from both parties, Sept 22 for oral replies and Oct 31 for the verdict.
Ismanira testified in her own defence for three days.
Dr Noor Aishah testified that stressful WhatsApp messages from the accused were normal expressions from a mother caring for an autistic child.
'From a psychological perspective, these should not be viewed as an intention to commit a crime. If you ask anyone, it's common for messages to a spouse to contain harsh words, but without any intent behind them,' she said during examination-in-chief by Haresh, Bernama reported.
She described the messages as Ismanira's way of expressing affection for her son while venting to her husband, who was at work at the time.
Dr Noor Aishah said the texts were emotional outbursts and light-hearted remarks and not to be taken seriously, with no indication of malicious intent.

Woman loses RM335,400 to online investment scam
KUANTAN: A woman trader lost RM335,400 after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme. Pahang Police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 53-year-old woman was drawn to the investment after seeing an advertisement on Facebook on April 30 and subsequently contacted an individual who introduced herself as 'Serena' via WhatsApp. "The victim was later added to a WhatsApp group and instructed to download an investment application,' he said in a statement today. He said the victim made 22 transactions to seven different bank accounts between June 2 and July 23, allegedly for investment purposes. Yahaya said based on the information displayed on the application, the victim believed she had made investment profits totalling RM4.8mil but was later asked to pay a 12 per cent commission, or RM221,670, in order to make a withdrawal. "The victim, who had used her savings for the investment, realised she had been duped when pressured to make additional payments,' he said. Yahaya reminded the public to be cautious of online investment schemes that promise high returns within a short period, particularly those promoted on social media. - Bernama

Daycare neglect case closed in Iskandar Puteri due to lack of evidence, say police
ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 6 — Police have confirmed that no further action will be taken in an alleged child neglect case involving a daycare centre here due to insufficient evidence to prosecute. Iskandar Puteri district police chief ACP M. Kumarasan said a 27-year-old local woman, mother to a one-year-old boy, lodged a police report on January 19 this year, alleging neglect while her child was under the care of the daycare. 'The investigation, conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters,' he said in a statement today. Following the investigation, the case was referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office, which decided to classify it as 'No Further Action' (NFA), citing a lack of sufficient evidence to implicate any party. Meanwhile, a Facebook post that went viral on August 5 included images showing what appeared to be scars on the child's back, which the mother claimed were discovered on January 17, after bathing the child. The mother alleged the injuries resembled bruises and redness, and a medical exam ruled out allergies, suggesting they might have resulted from being struck or falling on a long object. She also expressed frustration upon learning the case had been closed, especially after the daycare centre failed to provide CCTV footage, reportedly due to damage caused by a thunderstorm. — Bernama
