Hades II adds more combat options in its third major early access update
Hades II announced its third update today. The sequel to 2020 indie game darling Hades is technically still in early access on PC and Mac, but has been getting some beefy updates ahead of its expected official release later this year. The Unseen Update is a free, automatic update that mostly focuses on new combat development.
There's a new Vow of Rivals that allows players to challenge more powerful Guardian foes. All of the main weapons have received hidden aspects that offer new forms and fighting styles. There's also new hexes and blessings, some fresh artwork, and new story events to help grow your relationships with the many members of the ancient Greek pantheon.
When Hades II does exit early access with the launch of v1.0 — and developer Supergiant said that it doesn't have a timeline for that yet — the game will follow its predecessor's launch schedule. Switch 2 and Switch will be the first consoles to get the full release alongside PC and Mac, with PlayStation and Xbox players needing to wait before they'll get a version of the rogue-like.

The GMKtec G3 Plus is 4.49 by 4.17 inches around and 1.65 inches tall, even smaller than the 5 x 5 x 2 Mac Mini. The G3 Plus's Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 connections are just a hair behind the Mac's Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, but the G3 Plus holds its own when it comes to ports, with four USB 3.2, two HDMI 4K, and gigabyte Ethernet, compared to the Mac's two USB-C, three Thunderbolt 4, Ethernet, and one HDMI. But while the GMKtec G3 Plus would probably get edged out by the Mac Mini in a pure toe-to-toe performance battle, it more than makes up for it by destroying the Mac in the all-important price war — just $157 in this Amazon deal, compared to the $500 starting point of the Mac Mini. Unless you're a hardcore Mac devotee, that's a hard one to overcome. Get the macOS Finder to Do Just About Anything by Typing Natural Language Commands
With the app Substage, users can type out file management tasks in plain English, then use the commands it generates to convert file types, manage folders, create zip files, and more. But I also don't think chatbots are how people will use this technology in the years to come. Substage, an indie Mac application by developer Joseph Humfrey, is a simple app that points to a potential alternative—one that's useful right now. This application floats under every Finder window, meaning you see it only when you're browsing files in macOS. You can type English-language sentences into it to do things like rename, convert, or compress files. The application uses the large language model to create a command, like what you could run in the Terminal. The application then shows it to you and asks whether you actually want to run it. I highlighted a video and asked for it to be converted to an MP3 with just the audio, and that worked. I opened a folder full of photos and asked for every picture to be converted to a PNG, and that worked too. I opened up the folder where I store my personal journal and asked for a zip file of every entry that mentioned pancakes—I got one (137 entries, apparently). This can feel a little like magic, but there's a caveat: You need a basic understanding of what is, and what isn't, possible to do with the command line in order to use the applications effectively. 'The goal was to make powerful tools more accessible—to bring the power of the command line to nontechnical users,' Humfrey tells me. 'But what I've come to realize is that it really shines in the hands of semi-technical users: people who understand roughly what's possible but appreciate a speed boost.' If you're reading this article I think there's a good chance that's you. Maybe you occasionally use the command line to do things after a little bit of Googling or reading some documentation online. With Substage you don't have to do that—you can just ask for what you want and, if there's a command for the job, you'll probably get it. It's best to have some experience with the command line before running these generated commands. Courtesy of Justin Pot None of this is without risk. Large language models make mistakes, which is why the application shows you the command before running it. This is another reason the application probably isn't easy to recommend to users with no command line experience. It's possible the generated command could do something drastic like delete your files, though I didn't run into problems like this. It's a good idea to double-check the commands as you go and to make sure your files are backed up before you start. There are a few other limitations. Unlike ChatGPT and the more advanced models, Substage's bot doesn't have a memory feature, meaning you can't reference previous commands in the one you're currently generating. The application also isn't aware of the contents of videos or photos, meaning you can't ask it to do things like put all the cat photos into a new folder. Humfrey, for his part, says his favorite use for the application is media conversion. 'I know how to use After Effects, but it's so much easier to say 'trim this 16:9 video to 16:10' and be done with it,' he said, saying the application offers the flexibility of ffmpeg without the need to memorize the manual. It's a compelling use case, one I imagine more applications will explore as large language models mature. Substage offers a two-week trial. After that you have the option to pay $4 per month to use it. Alternatively, if you run your own large language model on your local machine, or if you already have an API key for an AI model you use all the time, you can pay a one-time fee of $30.

Here's what Mac you need for Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is launching on macOS tomorrow, and CD Projekt Red is now sharing details on exactly what Mac you'll need to get the most out of the game. While Cyberpunk 2077 has been optimized for a variety of Macs, from early M1 models up, if you want the top 'very high fidelity' config then you'll need an M3 Ultra or M4 Max machine with 36GB of unified memory. CD Projekt Red is using dynamic 'for this Mac' presets that will assign settings and resolutions based on your Mac's hardware. M1 Macs will be able to run Cyberpunk 2077, as long as you have 16GB of unified memory. That gives you the 'minimum' config, which runs at 1440 x 900 resolution or 1600 x 900 (using MetalFX dynamic resolution scaling) with a target performance of 30fps. If you want 60fps then CD Projekt Red is recommending an M3 Pro or higher with 18GB of unified memory, which will run at 1080p resolution (using MetalFX dynamic resolution scaling) with a target of 60fps. You'll likely be able to achieve 60fps by dropping the resolution below 1080p on some older Apple silicon hardware, though. The remaining 'high fidelity' and 'very high fidelity' configs will be reserved for some of the most powerful Apple silicon chips. High fidelity requires an M2 Ultra or M3 Max chip with 36GB of unified memory, and will enable 60fps gameplay at 1440p with MetalFX DRS. Very high fidelity is reserved for M3 Ultra or M4 Max chips with 36GB of unified memory, and will also deliver 60fps gameplay at 1440p with MetalFX DRS enabled. None of the 'for this Mac' presets enable ray tracing by default, though. If you want to play around with ray tracing then CD Projekt Red recommends an M3 or newer chip. An Apple M3 Pro device with 18GB of unified memory will be able to handle the medium ray tracing preset at 1080p (with MetalFX DRS) and 30fps. If you want Cyberpunk 2077 ray-traced at 60fps on Mac then you'll need an M3 Max or higher chip with 36GB of unified memory, which will run the medium ray tracing preset at 60fps at 1080p with MetalFX DRS. AMD's FSR upscaling and frame generation will also be available in Cyberpunk 2077 on Mac, so it's possible with a mixture of settings you'll be able to find an even sweeter spot for playing this game on a Mac than the presets provide. Cyberpunk 2077 will be available from Apple's own Mac App Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and tomorrow, and the game supports cross progression across all platforms.
