Pahalgam terror attack: Initial probe reveals involvement of two local terrorists

NEW DELHI: A day after 26 people were shot dead in a terror attack at a meadow near Pahalgam in J&K, the preliminary probe revealed that the terrorists chose Baisaran due to the absence of security forces and no access to vehicular movement.
Sources said that the location was also chosen to make rescue operations slow and casualties high.
"The investigators have identified that two locals named Adil Guree of Anantnag and Aasif Shaikh of Sopore are suspected of having been involved in the attack," confirmed sources.
The NIA team is further verifying the leads provided by the local police.
The NIA team, led by an Inspector General (IG) level officer, has joined the probe so far and is assisting the Jammu & Kashmir Police, officials said.
They also added that in due course, the federal anti-terror investigation agency would take over the case.
Sources indicated that both Pakistani and local Kashmiri terrorists wore helmet-mounted cameras, filmed the entire assault and were involved in the attack on tourists.
They said that in total, the number of terrorists is believed to be seven -- five foreign and two local, who got adequate support from TRF overground operatives in terms of logistics and thorough reconnaissance of the area before carrying out the massacre.
The terrorists who were clad in camouflage outfits and pathani suits, came to the Baisaran meadow and opened fire with American-made M4 carbine assault rifles and AK-47s.
Over 50-70 used cartridges had been recovered from the incident site by the evening of April 22, the sources said.
Further, providing the details of weapons the terrorists were carrying, the sources said that two of them were carrying M4 carbine assault rifles while the other three were carrying AK-47s.
"After reaching the attack site, the terrorists first held the tourists hostage at gunpoint and then asked all women and children to stay away, adding that the terrorists fired from close range after inquiring about identities and subsequently indiscriminately," sources said.
However, another intelligence official claimed that the firing was entirely 'indiscriminate', except for the fact that the perpetrators segregated women and children and fired upon men only.
Talking about the route through which the terrorists infiltrated into India, the official said that the border terrain along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Jammu region is V-shaped and Pakistani troops remain deployed in the front at a few places.
'Therefore, it has always been difficult to guard against infiltration, and possibly, they entered through this area and traveled all the way to the South Kashmir region,' he noted.

Body of Pakistani National Handed Over At LoC In Rare Cross-Border Humanitarian Move

In a rare humanitarian move across the Line of Control (LoC), Indian authorities on Saturday repatriated the body of a Pakistani national to officials from Pakistan at the Teetwal Crossing Point in north Kashmir's Karnah sector. The body was handed over at 6:00 PM under strict security and full administrative oversight. The deceased had initially remained unidentified after being recovered on July 20 from the banks of the Kishanganga River near Government Higher Secondary School, Keran. After conducting the necessary legal formalities under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the body was buried by the local Auqaf Committee, as no claimants had come forward. Later in July, Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) formally communicated that the deceased was a Pakistani citizen and requested its return. In response, the District Magistrate of Kupwara ordered the exhumation of the body under Section 196 of the BNSS to facilitate identity verification and dignified handover. The repatriation process was jointly supervised by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Karnah Zaffar Ahmad Lone, Tehsildar Karnah Mohammad Amin Bhat, and the Station House Officers of both Keran and Karnah police stations. Medical personnel and local magistrates were also present to ensure proper legal and humanitarian procedures were strictly followed. The body was transported from Keran to Teetwal and respectfully handed over to Pakistani authorities at the LoC in what officials described as a rare act of cross-border compassion. The operation was carried out through coordinated military communication between both sides, demonstrating a shared commitment to dignity in death even amidst tense geopolitical relations. Official statements from the Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan's Foreign Office are still awaited as the handover draws wider regional and diplomatic attention.

NIA files chargesheet against five Maoist operatives in Chhattisgarh

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted five Maoist operatives in connection with the February 2024 Chhattisgarh arms recovery case, an official statement issued on Saturday said. The chargesheeted accused -- Anish Khan alias Annu Khan, Anil Kumar Netam, Jaysing Hidko, Raghvueer Jain and Shailendra Kumar Baghel alias Golu -- have been identified as Over Ground Workers (OGWs), including one supplier, for the banned terror organisation CPI (Maoist), it said. All of them were active cadres of the Kuyemari Area Committee of the terror outfit, said the statement issued by the NIA. The NIA in its supplementary charge sheet filed before the special court in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, has charged them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Explosives Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, it said. The counter-terror agency had earlier in August 2024 chargesheeted two armed cadres -- Vinod Awalam and Ashu Korsa -- of the CPI (Maoist). The NIA investigations revealed that Anish Khan had supplied explosives substances to the CPI (Maoist) cadres in the forest area of Aalparas village which were later recovered. "The other accused chargesheeted today had provided shelter and logistics support to the Maoist cadres for carrying out a fatal attack on security forces around Mujalgondi village in Kanker district," the statement said. The investigations in the case are continuing as part of the NIA's efforts to scuttle the Maoist outfit's terror agenda, it added. NIA raids 18 places in Karnataka over Hindu activist Suhas Shetty's killing

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out raids at 18 locations in Karnataka on Saturday in connection with the killing of Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty. The NIA took over the case from the state police in June, and as part of its probe, conducted raids at 18 locations.(HT/File) The Hindu activist was hacked to death by a group of assailants, including accused Abdul Safwan, in May this year in Mangaluru City. The NIA took over the case from the state police in June, and as part of its probe, conducted raids at 18 locations. Several digital devices, including 11 mobile phones, 13 SIM cards, and eight memory cards, along with other incriminating documents, were seized during searches across Mangaluru, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts, the NIA said in a statement. The locations searched today were linked to 12 people arrested in connection with Suhas Shetty's murder, which the probe agency said was committed "to spread terror" in the society. On May 1, Suhas Shetty was travelling with five others in Mangaluru's Bajpe area when his vehicle was intercepted by a group carrying deadly weapons. He was subsequently hacked to death, and the incident was captured on CCTV. The clip showed the assailants attacking him with machetes and swords. Following his death, a prohibitory order under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was imposed in the area for five days. A case was first registered at the Bajpe Police Station, but chorus soon grew seeking an NIA investigation. The probe agency took over the case later in June and has been investigating ever since. While multiple locations have been raided, further investigation into the case is still underway.
