Owen Farrell's 'Aura' and 'Serious Quality' Will Help Lions in Australia, Teammates Say

Owen Farrell's curveball call-up by the British and Irish Lions was welcomed by his new teammates Friday. The former England captain was praised for his high standards and leadership qualities as he heads to Australia for his fourth tour.
Lions coach Andy Farrell picked his son to replace the injured Elliot Daly, and it's a somewhat controversial selection. Owen Farrell hasn't played test rugby since the 2023 Rugby World Cup – he took a break from internationals to prioritize his mental well-being – and has had an underwhelming, injury-hit club season at Racing 92 in France, including a May 4 concussion, since which he hasn't played.
However, the 33-year-old Farrell is one of the great England players of his generation, having earned 112 caps and scored more points than anyone else. He is now the only player in the Lions squad who was involved in the triumphant tour to Australia in 2013.
'You don't lose class. Faz is a class player, so I'm well happy,' said hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who has played for England with Farrell. 'When it was announced internally, the reaction was good. Faz is a well-known player. He's played quality rugby over many years.'
'One thing about Faz is the standards he sets on the training field. He's got a bit of an aura about him on training fields, which makes you want to try and train to perfection. I know it's quite hard to perfect training every single day, but he definitely makes standards higher.'
Farrell was arriving in Sydney on Friday and won't be playing in the tour match against the New South Wales Waratahs at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, when Tadhg Beirne will captain the Lions.
'Owen brings some serious quality. We're looking forward to him coming into the squad and getting to hang out with him,' said Beirne, who played with Farrell during the 2021 Lions tour to South Africa. 'Any type of leadership is only going to enhance the squad. Playing with him four years ago, I've seen all those leadership qualities that he brings. There's the quality of his talent as well, which will do nothing but boost the squad.'

With Bat-Tossing and Flamboyant Sixes, Rishabh Pant Thrills During England-India Cricket Test

The bat went one way. The ball went the other. One of the wildest innings in test cricket from India star Rishabh Pant came to a suitably extraordinary end against England at Edgbaston on Saturday. Attempting to pull offspinner Shoaib Bashir for six, Pant miscued his shot while also letting go of his bat, which flew toward midwicket – close to England fielder Brydon Carse. Meanwhile, the ball looped high in the air and into the deep on the offside where it was caught by Ben Duckett. Carse collected the bat and returned it to Pant, who walked off to an ovation after an incident-packed knock of 63 off 58 balls just after lunch on Day 4 of the second test in Birmingham. 'An extraordinary innings,' said former England captain Mike Atherton, who was calling the match for British broadcaster Sky Sports. 'And it was an extraordinary end.' Pant, one of the most flamboyant batters in world cricket, brought the kind of chaos rarely seen in the often-sedate test format in an innings containing eight fours and three sixes. Off just his fourth ball faced, Pant advanced down the track and smashed England pacer Josh Tongue for a straight six. There was a flick for another maximum off his hips and a shovel shot over the field for four that ended with Pant rolling on the ground in the crease. He was also dropped twice – by Zak Crawley and Chris Woakes – either side of his first bat-throwing episode just before lunch when, on 41, he went for a pull shot, missed the ball, and released his bat. It flew about 20 meters into the leg side – again missing any England fielders – and sparked laughter on and off the field. He did it again hours later, but this time he wasn't so lucky after connecting with the ball. By the time he was dismissed, Pant had reached a half-century in a test for the 10th time against England.

Grid Penalty for Bearman at British Grand Prix After a Pit-Lane Crash Under a Red Flag

Oliver Bearman will head into his first home race in Formula 1 with a 10-place grid penalty after crashing on his way into the pit lane under a red flag. The 20-year-old Haas rookie lost control and spun into a barrier while coming into the pits after the third practice session had been stopped because of an earlier crash for Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto. The race stewards ruled that Bearman had failed to comply with red-flag rules when he accelerated significantly to race pace before coming into the pits. The stewards said the British driver had been trying to simulate coming into the pits in race conditions and had been going faster under the red flag than on his previous entry to the pits. Bearman said the crash happened because his brakes had gone cold under the red-flag conditions. 'While this may have been a factor contributing to the crash, we do not consider it to be a mitigating factor,' the stewards ruled. As well as the grid penalty, Bearman picks up four penalty points, giving him a total of eight. Reaching 12 penalty points means an automatic one-race suspension.

Pant Chucks Bat In Wild Innings As India Extends Lead To 357 Runs Against England

Rishabh Pant was bringing the chaos at Edgbaston on Saturday as India stretched its lead to 357 runs by lunch on Day 4 of the second test against England. The explosive left-handed batter reached the break on 41, having been dropped twice on either side of a bizarre incident where he went for a pull shot, missed the ball, and let go of his bat. It flew about 20 meters into the leg side – luckily missing any England fielders – and sparked laughter on and off the field. Pant was alongside Shubman Gill (24) – the India captain who scored 269 in the first-innings total of 587 – with the tourists on 177–3 and having seen Karun Nair removed for 26 and Lokesh Rahul for 55. They began the day on 64–1 and first lost Nair, who drove and edged Brydon Carse to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Rahul departed when he lost his middle stump to a seaming delivery by pacer Josh Tongue, and that brought Pant to the middle, certainly livening things up. Off just his fourth ball faced, Pant advanced down the track and smashed Tongue for a straight six before sending an easy chance to Zak Crawley at mid-on off the bowling of Ben Stokes. Somehow, he dropped it. Then came an over from Tongue where Pant chucked his bat in the air before the very next ball, offering up a chance to Chris Woakes, who couldn't gather a leading edge. Pant made England pay by nudging close to a half-century, having already hit five fours and two sixes, as Gill played a steadier role at the other end. England leads the five-test series 1–0 after winning at Headingley last week.
