OPINION: AB de Villiers should still be playing regular T20 cricket

This is an age-old cliche that gets thrown around in sport – sometimes too often for my liking – but in this case, there is no better phrase.
South Africa's AB de Villiers may have retired from international cricket almost a decade ago – he called time on T20 internationals in 2017 – but the 41-year-old has shown he still has what it takes to compete with the best in the world.
At the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) tournament being held in England, Mr 360 has made all the bowlers that have come before him look like average club cricketers.
After a slow start to the tournament where he made only three runs against the West Indies, De Villiers has gone on to post scores that validate his spot in the ICC Hall of Fame.
An unbeaten 61 off 30 balls against India, 116 not out off 51 against England and 123 off 46 against Australia shows there is still a spot for him in any franchise team around the world.
Come on, get AB playing again
Yes, the opposition he has bludgeoned to all parts of the ground may be past their prime, but it has been the manner in which he has gone about his work that has been beyond impressive.
If I was a chairman of any T20 franchise – be it the SA20, Indian Premier League or Australia's Big Bash – I would be on the phone to De Villiers, making him an offer he could not refuse.
The joys of the modern day T20 game means he could play purely as an impact player, meaning he just has to bat and after that he can put his feet up and enjoy watching the game he clearly still has a deep love for.
His vision and power is still second to none and throw in the fact that he remains as fit as anyone currently playing competitive cricket and this decision should be a no-brainer.
A guy like India's MS Dhoni is 44 and he is still raking in the big bucks in the IPL.
So why not AB?
Come on bigwigs of franchise cricket, give AB a call and give him a contract so the lovers of the game can enjoy watching him play for a few more years.

Markram, understanding the importance of giving the trio the space and freedom to play their own way, told the media on Friday that he wants to see them continue playing fearless cricket. The 30-year-old himself was once a youngster in a changeroom with the likes of AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, and Faf du Plessis, making him the right man to guide the youngsters through what is usually a tough country to tour. 'For your young guys, the last thing you want to do is try to clip their wings. You want to let them fly and do their thing,' said Markram. 'I think we've seen it on various stages around the world now — in SA20 and elsewhere — that they are proper X-Factor players who can transition to international cricket quite easily, and they've proven it now.

Last week, Bavuma and his Proteas teammates took the ICC mace to his home town of Langa in Cape Town. Hordes of fans, young and old, greeted their heroes to celebrate their landmark victory. Speaking at the Cricket SA awards on Thursday at Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg where Bavuma was adjudged Test Player of the Year, the skipper spoke about bringing that trophy 'back home'.

Markram says Proteas' ‘proper X-factor' players must be allowed to ‘fly'
Exciting young batters Dewald Brevis and Lhuan-dre Pretorius will next be in action against the Australians Down Under. Proteas T20 captain Aiden Markram says he will allow the number of exciting young players in his squad to play their natural attacking games when the South Africans come up against Australia in three matches Down Under from next weekend. Coach Shukri Conrad has picked a number of rookie players for the tour, including Dewald Brevis, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Kwena Maphaka, as well as Nandre Burger, George Linde, Senuran Muthusamy, Nqaba Peter and Prenelan Subrayen, who all don't have a ton of experience at international level. It is mostly the big-hitting Brevis and Pretorius who Markram would have been alluding to when asked what advice he'd give to some of the younger players in his squad for the tour. 'They must keep taking the game on' 'For any young guys the last thing you want to try do is clip their wings,' said Markram on Friday ahead of the team's departure to Australia on Saturday. 'You want to let them fly, do their thing. 'We've seen in the SA20 that they're proper X-factor players, and have taken to international cricket easily. 'I don't have too much advice for them. They must keep taking the game on and not be scared about disappointments or failures. 'It's been great to see their progress, they're going to play a massive role in the future of cricket for South Africa, and that's what we're excited about.' Unfamiliar territory The Proteas will take on the Aussies, who're fresh off a five-nil T20 series whitewash against the West Indies in the Caribbean, in Darwin and Cairns. Markram said they didn't know too much about the grounds and conditions they'd face in these unfamiliar venues. 'Not many of us would have played at those venues, so it is a bit more challenging, but it'll be important for us to assess things as quickly as possible, after a couple of balls, and plan from there. We'll tackle it head on on game day and see what the conditions offer.' The Proteas' ODI team, under Temba Bavuma, will also face the Australians in three matches after the T20 series. They'll only depart for Australia at a later date.
