$5bn Pakistan-Turkiye bilateral trade goal: PM urges MoC to set specific targets
Despite repeated commitments at the highest levels to increase trade, progress has remained limited— even though the Trade in Goods Agreement between Pakistan and Turkiye has been in effect since May 1, 2023.
Under this agreement, Pakistan has secured preferential access to the Turkish market across 261 tariff lines, covering both traditional and non-traditional sectors such as leather, rice, dates, mangoes, cutlery, sports goods, seafood, processed agricultural products, rubber tubes and tyres, plastics, and engineering goods.
Pakistan, Turkiye reaffirm commitment to boost ties, target $5 billion trade volume
In return, Turkiye has been granted concessions on 130 tariff lines, including items such as black tea, processed food products and flavourings, industrial raw materials, machinery parts, and electronic equipment components.
Both countries have set a strategic medium-term goal of enhancing bilateral trade to $5 billion, as part of their broader economic partnership. A key step in this direction was the Framework Agreement for Establishing a Free Trade Area, signed on March 22, 2016, expressing mutual commitment to gradually liberalise trade in goods.
Pakistan had undertaken extensive negotiations on the Trade in Goods Agreement in consultation with public and private stakeholders. The agreement represented a major breakthrough in Pakistan-Turkiye economic relations and was a central focus during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Turkiye from May 31 to June 2, 2022.
On July 7, 2025, during a meeting to review bilateral ties with Turkiye, the Prime Minister issued a series of decisions and directives to relevant ministries and departments.
Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Economic Affairs have been directed to propose date of next Joint Ministerial Commission meeting in August 2025 instead of September 8-9, 2025. Ministry of Defence (Aviation Division) will arrange a small meeting to discuss outsourcing of airports to Turkish firm.
Pakistan's Ambassador in Ankara to follow up PM's discussion with Turkish President regarding to G2G agreement with regard to world-class Turkish Consultant firm for Jinnah Medical Complex and Danish University. He would also pursue cooperation of ship-breaking industry with the Turkish firms.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has been directed to follow up with a Turkish company on both offshore and onshore exploration in Pakistan.
Prime Minister has directed Ministry of Railways to continue active follow up with Turkish side on the Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad Railway Project.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir Government has to allot at least 20 acres of land to MAARIF Foundation preferably in Muzaffarabad or in Mirpur if acceptable to Turkish side.
Ambassador of Pakistan in Ankara has to pursue with Turkish firms GIB for a G2G arrangement with FBR and developing a digitised cargo Tracking System. Advisor to PM has to send a letter to Ambassador in this regard.
Pakistan National Shipping Corporation will give a presentation to the Prime Minister by National Logistic Cell (NLC) after Deputy Prime Minister has seen it.

New record at PSX: KSE-100 crosses 136,000 level
Buying momentum continued unabated at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index crossing the 136,000 level, a new record high, amid a gain of over 1,800 points during trading on Monday. At 12:15pm, the benchmark index was hovering at 136,140.87 level, a gain of 1,847.11 points or 1.37%. Buying was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and refinery. Index-heavy stocks including MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, SNGPL, SSGC, MEBL, NBP and UBL traded in the green. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rejoiced over PSX's performance, saying that the development echoes the business community's confidence in the Pakistani economy. As per a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the prime minister added that positive economic indicators are a sign of the right direction of government policies. Meanwhile, analysts also attributed the bullish run to improved economic indicators, including record remittances collected during the last fiscal year. 'Result season has also kicked off, so that too needs to be closely monitored,' Sana Tawfik, Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited (AHL), told Business Recorder. During the previous week, the PSX extended its bullish momentum, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index closing at a fresh all-time high of 134,299.77 points, after gaining a robust 2,351 points or 1.8% on a week-on-week (WoW) basis. This marks another milestone in the local equity market's remarkable run, which has been fuelled by improving macroeconomic fundamentals, sustained foreign inflows, and strong institutional participation. Internationally, Wall Street and European share futures pulled Asian indices lower on Monday as the latest salvo of threats in the US tariff wars kept investors on edge. However, there were still hopes it was mainly bluster by President Donald Trump. Trump on Saturday said he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the EU and Mexico from August 1, even as they are locked in long negotiations. The European Union said it would extend a suspension of countermeasures to US tariffs until early August and continue to press for a negotiated settlement, though Germany's finance minister called for firm action if the levies went ahead. Investors have become largely inured to Trump's chaotic policy methods, and stocks eased only moderately, while the dollar gained little against the euro. For now, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was flat, while Japan's Nikkei eased 0.3%. Chinese blue chips firmed 0.3% as data showed annual export growth topped forecasts at 5.8% in June, even as exports to the US fell almost 10%. Figures on retail sales, industrial output and gross domestic product are out on Tuesday. This is an intra-day update

Pakistan fuel prices update: Expected to rise for next 15 days

Photo: REUTERS Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan are expected to increase by up to Rs6.60 per litre for the next 15 days, following a continued upward trend in global crude oil prices, according to industry sources. At the time of reporting, the proposed hike includes a Rs6.60 per litre increase in petrol and a Rs5.27 per litre rise in high-speed diesel (HSD). Conversely, the prices of kerosene and light diesel may see reductions of Rs3.74 and Rs2.23 per litre, respectively. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has completed its work based on the latest global market trends, and a final summary will be submitted to the government by tomorrow. The oil industry has already shared its calculations with the regulator. Sources confirmed that the final decision on price adjustments will be made following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's approval of OGRA's summary. The proposed changes would come into effect for the next fortnight as part of the government's regular price review mechanism for petroleum products. Read: Fuel price hike burns a hole in public pockets On July 1, the federal government increased petrol and diesel prices significantly for the first fortnight of the month, attributing the hike to global market volatility amid the 12-day Iran-Israel conflict. Petrol rose by Rs8.36 to Rs266.79 per litre, and high-speed diesel by Rs10.39 to Rs272.98, based on OGRA's recommendation. Pakistan, which imports around 85% of its petroleum needs, was directly impacted by the Middle East crisis.
