From Goals To Impact: Covia's Steady Progress Toward Our 2030 Goals

At Covia, we remain committed to advancing our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals with purpose and transparency. In 2024, our team made meaningful strides across a broad range of initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). The table above summarizes our performance against key targets, reflecting our dedication to responsible operations, positive social impact, and ethical governance. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving biodiversity to promoting a safe workplace and supporting our communities, each accomplishment highlights our ongoing commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient future.
Ensure Responsible Operations
Develop a robust Community Action Plan (CAP) at 100% of our locations to facilitate effective communication, identify areas for improvement, and best respond to community needs
Implement Covia's in-house Environmental Management System (EMS) at every site
We reached our goal of having CAPs at 100% of our facilities. These plans provide each facility with a site-specific plan for engaging the community. This approach not only fosters strong community relationships but also enhances our environmental stewardship efforts, allowing us to respond effectively to local needs and share successful strategies company wide.
Our EMS program is fully implemented at 9 sites, and we are working to finalize implementation across our network.
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Protect Essential Water Supply
Preserve, Restore, and Improve Biodiversity
Improve ratio of land rehabilitated to land restored
Implement conservation and biodiversity initiatives at all sites, with 50% of mining and processing sites achieving WHC certification
Develop a Species-at-Risk (SAR) Plan at 100% of our mining and processing sites where at-risk species are present
At the end of 2024, our ratio of land rehabilitated to land disturbed was 1:2, compared to 1:6 in 2023. We increased land reclamation investment across many sites, most notably Menomonie, Hephzibah, and Junction City.
Of our 45 sites, 20 are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), bringing our total percentage to 44%.In 2024 we expanded implementation of conservation plans, so that 49% of our sites now have a plan in place.
We developed 5 new SAR Plans in 2024, bringing our total percentage to 24%. We will continue to adopt these plans across the remaining sites in the coming years.
Ensure Safety and Health of Our Team Members
Achieve year-over-year improvement in all-incidence rate for team members in support of our Safety value and priorities; the ultimate goal is zero injuries
Achieve year-over-year reduction in the number of job positions potentially overexposed1 to respirable crystalline silica, through the Hierarchy of Controls
We continued to emphasize our commitment to safety through structured training and programs in 2024. Our all-incidence rate was to 0.89 in 2024. We compare this to the industry definition of anything below 1.0 being world- class safety performance.
We continued to invest in measures and capital projects focused on improving dust control at our mining and processing sites. In 2024, the number of job positions potentially overexposed to respirable crystalline silica was 13, compared to 9 in 2023. New community centre opens in park as hub for grassroots projects

A new community facility is offering a fresh start for grassroots projects. The well-being hub, based in Rouken Glen Park, is designed to support health, connection and sustainability through activities led by local groups. Operated by The Community Hub—an initiative of Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire—the site will be open for the next four months under a pilot scheme to test its long-term potential. Chat and Plant members hard at work (Image: Supplied) Ruth Gallagher, chief officer at Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire, said: "Our Community Hub initiative will house East [[Renfrew]]shire Climate Action Hub, Velo World and many other third/community sector organisations interested in joining our collaboration. "We will be testing and trying a variety of activities, including planting and growing community vegetables, health and wellbeing activities such as yoga as well as supporting the development of small local enterprises. "Pop down and have a chat with the team; join in the fun and share your ideas." Why Steel Dynamics (STLD) is Gaining Attention for Materials Dividends in 2025

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) is included among the 13 Best Materials Dividend Stocks to Buy Right Now. An aerial view of an industrial plant manufacturing welded pipes and tubes from stainless steel and galvanized carbon. Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) ranks among the largest steel producers in North America. Its main operation centers around electric-arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, which relies on recycled scrap metal as its primary input. This approach has a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional blast furnace methods and plays a key role in the company's sustainability efforts. Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) is now working to expand into recycled aluminum products, aiming to broaden its income sources and customer base. Vertical integration remains a priority, with many of its own facilities—such as fabrication shops— utilizing steel and materials produced internally. Initiatives like biocarbon use and circular manufacturing are also helping the company manage costs, stay compliant with regulations, and support growing customer demand for more sustainable supply chains. Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) is a strong dividend payer with a robust cash position. In the most recent quarter, the company reported an operating cash flow of $302 million and paid $75 million in dividends. In addition, it has raised its payouts for 13 consecutive years, which makes it one of the best dividend stocks. The company pays a quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share and has a dividend yield of 1.57%, as of July 29. While we acknowledge the potential of STLD as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Repealing rule to curb greenhouse gas emissions will increase gas prices, Trump administration's own analysis finds

When the Environmental Protection Agency announced it would roll back regulations aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions — especially from motor vehicles — it touted annual savings for Americans of $54 billion. The EPA said eliminating Biden-era policies, which encouraged higher fuel efficiency standards for cars and electric vehicle adoption to limit tailpipe emissions, would enable consumers to "have affordable choices when deciding to buy a car." But a CBS News review of the agency's own regulatory impact analysis of the proposal found that gasoline prices would increase, and nearly a half million jobs would be lost by 2035, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Agency, which was cited in the EPA's report. In the EPA's July analysis, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which collects and analyzes energy data, showed Biden-era policies that were adopted by the end of 2024 would dramatically bring down the future cost of gasoline because more consumers would be driving electric vehicles, hybrids and fuel-efficient cars that require less gas. It is challenging to predict the future gas prices because they're subject to high uncertainty and market volatility, but under a future scenario where Biden-era policies have been revoked under the Trump administration, the EIA projects gasoline prices will continue to increase because of a higher demand for gas-powered cars and fuel. The former administrator of the EIA, Joseph DeCarolis, explained in an email that if the government "disincentivizes electric vehicle purchases, more consumers will purchase gasoline vehicles resulting in higher gasoline consumption and high gasoline prices for everyone." "There's a clear causal connection between rescinding measures promoting electric vehicles, such as EPA tailpipe standards, and the projection of higher gasoline prices," he said. When asked in an interview with CBS News' "The Takeout with Major Garrett" about how this plan could raise gas prices, Zeldin did not directly address the question. Instead, he argued that previous policies like an electric vehicle mandate were costing trillions of dollars to regulate climate pollution, saying the policies were "seeking to strangulate out of existence, entire sectors of our economy, and specifically our energy economy. 'It's important that we are applying common sense," Zeldin said, "that we are cognizant of these economic demands and that, wherever possible, when we can protect the environment and grow the economy that we will choose both." Neither the Biden nor Obama administrations implemented EV mandates, though both encouraged EV adoptions by Americans and businesses. Zeldin reiterated the Trump administration's stance that the EPA does not have the power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act unless an act of Congress changes that. "Here's my message: If Congress wants the EPA to be regulating the heck out of carbon dioxide, well, they could put it inside of law," Zeldin said. Along with rolling back greenhouse gas emissions standards to limit tailpipe emissions, the EPA would also rescind fuel efficiency measures. Under Biden-era fuel efficiency policies, a new standard gas-powered car was expected to get 47.1 miles per gallon by 2027, and by 2035, cars were expected to achieve 61.2 mpg, according to EIA data. Without the Biden policies, model 2027 cars are supposed to meet a 43.6 mpg standard and gradually increase to 50.5 mpg by 2035. Light trucks and SUVs, beginning in model year 2027, under a scenario where Biden policies are revoked by the Trump administration, are set to reach fuel efficiency of 27.2 mpg and increase to 28.6 mpg by 2035. Had the Biden policies remained in place, SUVs and light trucks were expected to meet a 28.4 mpg standard in 2027 and increase to 46.2 mpg by 2035, according to EIA data. The EIA's own data estimates that a future scenario — where Biden-Obama emissions standards are revoked — would lead to a loss of 450,000 jobs by 2035. Jobs would begin to rebound by 2045, but not enough to overcome the significant losses suffered in previous decades. Peter Huether, senior transportation research associate at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, said in a statement, "Drivers would pay thousands of dollars more in fuel and maintenance costs over the life of a vehicle, and businesses could lose billions annually from higher trucking costs" as a result of the Trump administration's deregulation. "These costs would ripple through the economy, raising prices for everyday goods and undercutting job growth," Huether said.
