Novak Djokovic shrugged off the loss of a set to cruise through to the Wimbledon second round as he launched his mission to win a record 25th Grand Slam.
The veteran Serb, a seven-time winner at the All England Club, won 6-1, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2, 6-2 against French world number 41 Alexandre Muller.
He dominated the first set on Centre Court, breaking three times, but Muller levelled the match after taking the second set tie-break.
Sixth-seeded Djokovic resumed normal service in the third set and a couple of breaks in the fourth set sealed the deal.
He has been tied with long-retired Margaret Court on 24 Grand Slam singles titles since 2023 and he believes his most realistic hope of a historic 25th win lies at the All England Club.
Djokovic, who has lost the past two Wimbledon finals to Carlos Alcaraz, has the added incentive of pulling level with the retired Roger Federer, who won a record eight men's titles at the All England Club.
He has been in every Wimbledon final since 2018 but at 38 he knows time is running out as Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner establish a stranglehold at the top of the men's game. (AFP)

Djokovic, Sinner stroll into Wimbledon third round
Djokovic, Sinner stroll into Wimbledon third round Djokovic dropped just nine points on serve en route to his straight sets win over Britain's Dan Evans. Photo: Reuters Novak Djokovic crushed British wildcard Dan Evans in the Wimbledon second round as he stepped up his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title, while world number one Jannik Sinner cruised into round three. But there was heartbreak for home favourite Jack Draper as he crashed out to former finalist Marin Cilic. Djokovic avoided becoming one of the host of big names eliminated in week one in south London as the Serb needed just one hour and 47 minutes to dispatch Evans in a 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 victory on Centre Court. "It means I've been playing quite a long time!" Djokovic said when told he had just secured his 99th Wimbledon match victory. "I still enjoy it. This court has given me so much. Wimbledon has a special place in my heart – any history made here is obviously extra special," he added. Djokovic is dreaming of putting an exclamation point on his incredible career by becoming the most successful singles player in tennis history. The 38-year-old has been tied with Margaret Court on 24 Grand Slam titles since winning his most recent major prize at the 2023 US Open. Despite losing the last two Wimbledon finals to Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic believes the lawns of south-west London provide his best chance to win that elusive 25th major. "I'm aware of the history on the line. I'm thinking about the big things I can do in this tournament," he said. Sinner is yet to reach a Wimbledon final, but the US and Australian Open champion has been ruthless in dropping just 12 games in his opening two matches. The Italian thrashed Australia's Aleksandar Vukic 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 to set up a third round clash against Spaniard Pedro Martinez. "We saw there have been so many upsets this tournament so we try to stay focused and raise our level," said Sinner. (AFP)

Osaka ready to spread her Wimbledon wings after downing Zheng conqueror Siniakova
After years of having a rather strained relationship with Wimbledon thanks to being 'paralysed by fear' at the thought of playing on tennis's fastest surface, Naomi Osaka feels she has finally found her grass court wings. The Japanese player, who has won all four of her grand slam titles on the hard courts of Melbourne Park and Flushing Meadows, has never found her comfort zone on the green, green grass of SW19, making only four previous appearances during her 10-year professional career. During those four visits to the All England Club, she won a total of just five matches, with third-round showings in 2017 and 2018 her stand-out performances – hardly anything to shout about for a woman who has been ranked on top of the world. But after matching her best Wimbledon showing on Wednesday with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Czech Katerina Siniakova, who has won the Wimbledon women's doubles title three times and dispatched China's Zheng Qinwen in the first round, Osaka feels she has finally overcome the fear factor on grass. I think when you are young, you fear nothing, and that's one of the really cool things about it,' said Osaka, now ranked 53 as she continues to try to recapture her best form after taking a maternity break in 2023.
